It's my understanding that Charlie's is the original "Hot rod Lincoln", so props to him. But to give due credit, the song is a response to another one called "The hot rod race" from about 1950. That's what the first line of this song is all about. Hot rod Lincoln is the same song with different lyrics.
This version has a couple of words that are different from the one I remember of Charlie's. He recorded a couple I believe. 1959 rings a bell but it was early '60's when we heard it on radio & jukeboxes. I recall B side "Through The Mill" as mentioned previously. I have been talkin' my way through it as a poem (w/a southern drawl) for a half century now. PRICELESS!!! Someone else put out another version shortly after Charlie & it just didn't work.
Foot-feed's another name for accelerator pedal. Anybody should know that!1948 was the last year Lincoln made a V-12. 1949 and later Lincolns were V-8'S.That's my story and I 'm sticking to it!
Unforgettable, when this was out I recall I had a problem with my car and phoned my dad. He came out and helped me get it running again and followed me home. My mom kept looking at my car and said to my dad that it looked like the car was going down the road sidewise! This car was a 1961 Dodge in which the rear end had gone out and I replaced it with a Ford axle. It worked by the it would not stay lined up because the locking pins did not line up so it shifted when I "stepped on it". Fun.
@forgottenoldies The gas feed lever was located on the right side of steering column and you would push it up to accelerate, or down to slow down. It was NOT spring loaded and you had to push it downwards to slow down. When they made more modern cars (1940's), they began using a "gas feed pedal" which was known as the "Foot Feed". Many farm tractors still had gas feed levers in the 1950's. The old cars also had a a "starter pedal" located beside the foot feed (gas pedal).
This is my favorite car song. I prefer certain other lyrics in other versions. Charlie Ryan 'passes" a truck, but Commander Coty "sideswipes" a truck. I like thatg better. Also Charley said smoke was "rollin" out of the back. I prefer "pouring" out of the back. Johnny Bond has another good version but Charley Ryan's has the best sound effects. I also like his "went around the corner, tires on the side" ..
@pmcurl Charlie Ryan's Hot Rod Lincoln had 12 cylinders ... Commander Cody's only had 8. I do like both versions, as well as Johnny Bond and Asleep at The Wheel's versions :)
i love being young and listning to good old oldies haha. 16 and loving this kind of stuff haha:))))) thumbs up this comment if u r the same or r proud to c a youngin enjoying MUSIC not that niger shit!!!:DDDDD
the song dates back to 1951 as "Hot Rod Race" by Tiny Hill.
After Tiny Hill and his Orchestra, The song, as "Hot Rod Lincoln" was popularized by Johnny Bond in 1960, Then Charlie Ryan (one of the composers) covered it in 1964, Commander Cody in 1972, Asleep at the Wheel in 1988 and punk-rockers All in 1989. It was covered by several other lesser known artists as well.
"wind it up to 110 and broke the speedometer cable off the end" I did that in my old 73 amx at 120. a cop, who i was freinds with and happened to be sitting on the road i was driving on, told me he clocked me well north of 140mph. he didn't bother going after me. he told just to never do that again. a 12 mile drive in 4 mins on backroads and a long straightaway through town. I've gotten alot smarter in how i drive in the 10 years since that day.
Ha Ha!! my dad always drove lincoln's and i used to sneak it out after he went to sleep, this song reminds me of those times ;) man them ol' lincolns would run too...
Actually, this *isn't* the original - though Charlie Ryan *was* the first to record it - this is his *second* recording, from 1959. His first was 1955, as Charlie Ryan and The Livingston Brothers.
Yep!..Remember listening to this in the Sixties, Much better version than the Commander Cody one that seems to get all the air play. Thanks for posting.
I'm proud to say that my dad is the lead guitarist in this original recording of Hot Rod Lincoln. Charlie Ryan wrote the song and is the singer in this one. Dad recorded several songs with Charlie Ryan.
It is actually documented that this is about a race that took place on the Old Spiral Highway in Lewiston, Idaho. The lyrics have just been changed to San Pedro. I've been on that road and it is so crazy, I don't know why anyone would race it or how anyone could survive!
Think about it. The model A was a small car. WIth a 12 cylinder motor, it must have been a monster. But with mechanical drum brakes it must have been a bear to get slowed down.
@sjvh5514, it may be the original and I know that Charlie Ryan co-wrote the song, but if it had not been for Commander Cody, Charlie would not have put those vast royalty checks in his pocket or had his 15 minutes (#1 song according to Billboard Top 40).
Wish I could download it. I had the 45 by Johnny Bond taken off the Mobil Truckstop jukebox in Roby, Tx. in 1960. A friend down the road in '68 had a wild ass 427 SS Chevelle and I had a full race 327 Malibu Sport. We'd race through town at 2 am with open exhaust. The sheriff would come out of the truck stop(along with everybody else) and watch us go by. Two fastest cars in the county for years. You could see the flames under these bad boys.
EightSouthMan: For stoplight shutdown, I'd take the 327 in a New York minute. But if ya were runnin' 11 1/2 to 1 or better compression ratio, ya had to use the high octane they had then. The crap nowadays won't even fire unless ya retarded the spark to about 0-2 degrees
Had me a 55 Chev with a 350 horse 327. I put in a solid lifter cam and never got beat in 1965. Had to adjust the damn lifters every week, though. .020 Intake and Exhaust. Good times. Cops were just getting radios-Too easy
this is a sequel to a song, which is mentioned in intro to this song,i only heard once. it ends with two race cars piled up in the final turn, and the last line is:what did i see ,a kid in a model A,just a kid in a model A,or something like that.now thats a forgotten oldie
You need a video editing program like Windows Movie Maker (not the Win 7 version) or Corel Video Studio, Pinnacle, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut (MAC), Sony Vegas, etc. Put something in the video track - titles, pictures, video. @FriendNamedRed If you're handy, splice the speaker wire from your record player to a microphone adapter and plug in the mic jack on your computer and then record it
I've got the follow-up album "hot rod lincoln drags again",dated 60-61. It has what originally was an "AA/FC" when I was a kid. Had such tracks as "glitterin steal, hot rod hades,The dart & the lincoln...good stuff from hot rodings' early years. Now if I could just plug the turn table into the computer...
Chuck Berry "You Can't Catch Me" . Still a better song then this old beat til along come a guy by the name of Commander Cody Who gave this song an Ass Whoopin Sound....
@forgottenoldies Yeah. The Commander (Plymouth! lol!!) Cody cut is cute but THIS tune is the real deal. I love it. It's so ... AMERICAN. And ... it's the original. ;-) *****
I live just a couple miles away from where this race took place. It happened on the old Lewiston Grade at Lewiston Idaho. Charlie came by a couple years ago and did a tour with the Hot Rod Lincoln on his way to take the car to the Smithsonian. He said it was on the Grapevine in the song because nobody knows where Lewiston is.
@1337sarcophagus This isn't rap... FYI. Adn it CERTAINLY WASN'T THE FIRST! To say that would be to say fuck you to all the early blues guys that this music is based on... Blind Willy McTell, Son House, and that one dude, I just can think of right now.. to name a few... he song a song about hellhounds... and dusting his broom, and the crossroads,,, he's the most famous but I'm drawing a blank.
@nickothompson Wouldn't it depend completely on how narrowly you define "Rap". I'd say if the verses are spoken in sync with the rhythm of the song (unlike, for example, some of Issac Hays' covers), it's rap, regardless of whether the arrangement is R&B, country, rock, blues, etc. Of course, that would overlap with any number of other categories (eg. "Talking Blues"), as it probably should. I'd agree that it's pointless to look for a "first rap" song; you can always find something earlier.
@fairportfan2 Could you find me "Hot Rod Hades" or "Sidecar Cycle"? They are NOT found on YouTube or ... anywhere else I can find. If you could point me in the right, direction, I sure would appreciate it!
In fact....a white man did!....Was years later BUT check out "Swamp Rap" by Tony Joe White on Austin City Limits here on youtube (filmed in mid 70's?)
It is thought to have been written in 1955 by Charlie Ryan but it wasn't reviewed by Billboard and didn't chart until 1959 #14 on the country charts and #33 on the pop, some think it might even have been written around the same time as Arkie Shibley wrote a song called "Hot Rod Race" around 1950 (that is according to Ryan himself in an interview with Rod and Custom magazine, and that both were based on Ryans own Hot Rod Lincoln). BTW "Hot Rod Lincoln" is an answer to that song.
The 12 cylinder motor mentioned in this song was a flathead V12 engine, discontinued in the late 40's or early 50's. So my guess is that this version was originally released in 1955. Hope this helps racinghero3500!
I have 2 pictures of my 76 hot rod white Lincoln MK 4
460 4bbl, driving flat out down a country road 4 in the morning two buddies in car, road closed, crested the hill , saw bridge out, crossed the creek, hit a dirt pile and an oak tree end of story, or end of Lincoln that is. Had the car three months, 2 door white leather interior, wow, memories everlasting, let the good times roll, I still look back (20 years) and laugh, but I wasn't laughing then! I love this old song!
Most people think of Commander Cody when this song is mentioned, but I took an instant dislike to Cody when I first heard the hack job he did on this great song. Several others have done it without butchering it, like Roger Miller, but I still like Charlie's version the best. He wrote it, he should know how it should be done.
Grapevine hill(I-5)....Dodge Dakota R/T 275 hp......radar detector "On" doing 123mph...watching for CHP...my late father would've said I'm gong to "whip" you into drinkin'if you don't stop driving. that hot rod dodge!
luv it! i thought i was the only one that liked the original.i have the whole album taped to a cassette.from yrs ago.scratches and everything ,still listen to it every once in awhile.only gets better with every song. same tune but a great story teller...
It's been A LOOOT of years since I'e heard the original of that song. My dad used to have it on 45 RPM. I have the original 45 RPM version of the follow up song to "Hot Rod Lincoln" called "Sidecar Cycle" also by Charlie Ryan. If I can ever afford a good ripping software for my computer I'll have to post it someday for all to enjoy. Thanks for posting the original "Hotrod Lincoln". That was very cool to listen to again after all these years!
Heck Yeah Navyguy1990! I've been looking everywhere for a copy of "Sidecar Cycle" - but nowhere does it seem to exist on the internet. I did find "Hot Rod Hades" but that's about it. Be thankful we have YouTube!!
finally the original....... pure ! ..... heard many a version but they all sounded a little off from what i remembered as a kid... sweet as penny candy.. .thanks

@jannyrcobs Who here knows what a "foot-feed" is?
0289XYZ 7 months ago 2
@0289XYZ Older cars used to have a hand-operated control to "feed" gasoline
to the engine. When they started putting it on the floor (accelerator) they called it
foot-feed as opposed to hand-feed. Some folks mistakenly pronounce it as
foot-feet.

I live just a couple miles away from where this race took place. It happened on the old Lewiston Grade at Lewiston Idaho. Charlie came by a couple years ago and did a tour with the Hot Rod Lincoln on his way to take the car to the Smithsonian. He said it was on the Grapevine in the song because nobody knows where Lewiston is.

tomcatfranks 2 years ago
Rap? It's just a country song with spoken lyrics. That's been going on for many a long year
topologyrob 2 years ago
@1337sarcophagus This isn't rap... FYI. Adn it CERTAINLY WASN'T THE FIRST! To say that would be to say fuck you to all the early blues guys that this music is based on... Blind Willy McTell, Son House, and that one dude, I just can think of right now.. to name a few... he song a song about hellhounds... and dusting his broom, and the crossroads,,, he's the most famous but I'm drawing a blank.

@nickothompson Elmore James.

@nickothompson also Robert Johnson
forgottenoldies 1 year ago
@nickothompson Wouldn't it depend completely on how narrowly you define "Rap". I'd say if the verses are spoken in sync with the rhythm of the song (unlike, for example, some of Issac Hays' covers), it's rap, regardless of whether the arrangement is R&B, country, rock, blues, etc. Of course, that would overlap with any number of other categories (eg. "Talking Blues"), as it probably should. I'd agree that it's pointless to look for a "first rap" song; you can always find something earlier.
lrd9999 1 year ago
The first RAP SONG was RAPPERS DELIGHT LONG BEFORE BLONDIE
mthrethel 1 year ago
@nickothompson yes, it was Robert Johnson. Let's remember Robert Lockwood Jr as well, and THE Muddy Waters

@1337sarcophagus Find "Hot Rod Lincoln", the song that this was an "answer song" to.
This is basically an up tempo "talking blues".
fairportfan2 1 year ago
@fairportfan2 Could you find me "Hot Rod Hades" or "Sidecar Cycle"? They are NOT found on YouTube or ... anywhere else I can find. If you could point me in the right, direction, I sure would appreciate it!
HIghBlutdruck 9 months ago
@HIghBlutdruck I've got "Sidecar Cycle" on an early 80's re-issue 45. It's pretty much the same song, and not rare if you know where to look.

Most web articles say 1955. It may have been re-released in 1959.
forgottenoldies 2 years ago
It is thought to have been written in 1955 by Charlie Ryan but it wasn't reviewed by Billboard and didn't chart until 1959 #14 on the country charts and #33 on the pop, some think it might even have been written around the same time as Arkie Shibley wrote a song called "Hot Rod Race" around 1950 (that is according to Ryan himself in an interview with Rod and Custom magazine, and that both were based on Ryans own Hot Rod Lincoln). BTW "Hot Rod Lincoln" is an answer to that song.
Icygirl2008 2 years ago
