"Waking Tall" was total BS! No proof that Buford was ever attacked cut up and robbed. Did Dwana tell you that when Buford was alleged to have gone back and robbed the club, he did so with the help of two friends when only the owner was in the club? Did she tell you that both Buford and Pauline were having extramarital affairs? Did she explain why so many people have said that Buford was taking payoffs? Did she tell you the Pussers were said to be separated at the time of the ambush?

To me, the greatest B movie ever made. While everyone goes on and on about how it is not historicly accurate, remember, it's not a documentary. I've watched this film over my dad's shoulder when I was a kid. To me, what makes the film great is that everything seems possible in real life. Films these days call for complete suspension of disbelieve. I know Pusser faces very long odds, but he takes huge losses himself. Films now show the hero taking on 100 guys and coming away unscathed.

There is no known record, police report or medical document to prove that Buford was ever attacked and cut up as was shown in the movie. He claimed it took 192 stitches to close the wounds on his head and face. Funny thing is photos taken shortly after the alleged attack show no scaring to his head of face. There was a book about Pusser way back in the late 60s (or thereabouts) but I cannot recall the name. It might be a pretty good one. It had a bunch of photos of the family variety so I believe it was authored by someone reliable. There was also a hardback photo album released about ten or fifteen years ago by his family that also had his story in it.

Sheriff Buford Pusser , McNairy County TN. Pauline Pusser was allegedly killed in the ambush on 8/12/67 that was meant for him. I have photos of the car taken after the ambush that raise many questions regarding Pauline's death. Many locals that I have interviewed claim that Buford murdered his wife and blamed the state liners as Pauline was about to divorce him and expose his corruption (pay offs etc) Crimemyths has audio files of some of the real people telling some of what they know.

Plus, 42 years later is alot to ask of someone's memory. The police call that a dead case. If there was a case, I'm sure it would have been made then. I meant to say alleged ambush. No witnesses. As a matter of fact Buford Suffered eight bullet wounds from three different alleged attacks. There were never ant witnesses, no arrests and all the wounds except for the one to the jaw were superficial.
Of the seven stab wounds, only one witness, the county coroner, who said the stabbing DID NOT happen, no arrests and all of the wounds were superfical. TBI will not release file as it is an open case. It was mentioned then.
Condo News carried a multi page story on Pusser's corruption and the accusations of murdering his wife. Others tried to report the story but mailed to get main media attention.
So he shot himself the other times? How many police officers are in shootings every year with no witnesses? Without cameras, the rest of us would have no idea what happened. Why would the County Coroner say the stabbings didn't happen? The Coroner only investigates homicides, not aggravated assaults. The stabbings are from an open case? The statute of limitations is long past overdue. If whomever stabbed him walked in and confessed, they couldn't charge them with anything. More holes.

Shooters put their right foot back which exposes their left side. So if he was shot from the front, he would have been shot on the left if he was shooting that way.

The report says the cause of death was the first shot the entered the left jaw and went out the back of the head. The second shot hit her in the back of the head and the third shot was in the abdomen. They were all called distant shots by the coroner, hardly an execution. He fires 3 rapid shots after she shoots at him, hits her jaw, she spins and the next shot hits the back of her head and the third in the abdomen. The first shot was angle upward, which would be true if he was ducking down

First of all Buford described the order of shots fired.., shoulder, back torso, head. Secondly, people don't "spin around" when shot as the bullet velocity is too great, thats all movie stuff. Other witnesses at the scene talked about teeth being impacted in the carpet, which indicates that she was on the floor when shot in the head, thats when the doctor agreed the head shot could be interpreted that way. You wouldn't make much of a lawyer as you clearly didn't check out the evidence.
You failed to comment on the fact that no other LEO was ever attacked as Buford was or that all of his gunshot wounds were too the left side of the body. As for the Coroners statement, he was at a house fired where people had died, Buford was directing traffic t the scene when he stopped a car he thought looked overloaded and suspected to be hauling booze, thats when and why the stabbing took place,. You either didn't read that or choose to ignore it. What kind of Lawyer does that?

LEO is normally used in print. In almost 15 years, I've never met an officer that refers to himself as a law enforcement officer. Corrections officers use that to skirt around the impersonating charge and get out of a ticket. I have worked in 3 different states from Ohio to Georgia. All my agencies have a high crime rate. Update: This past week I spoke with Dr Jerry Francsico, former TN State Medical Examiner . Dr Francisco said that TBI Investigator Warren Jones had Francisco accompany him to the ambush sites as he (Jones) had suspicions of Pusser's involvement in Paulines death. Local authorities never requested an autopsy on Pauline and there was no protocol in place to do one otherwise. Investigator Jones was aware of the Pusser's marital problems and separation.
I'm embarrassed to say that I wasted a late night looking into Buford killing his wife. I can't seem to find anything on the internet suggesting that it was ever even suggested. Where did you hear about this, plus how did he get shot in the face? Was that self inflicted?

Jeff, for what is worth, I still enjoy the movie. Its one of my favorites. After being a Buford Pusser fan for so many years I was disappointed in him when I learned what I believe is the truth. Its difficult to argue with the facts found in autopsy reports, photos and other documentaion. I also find it increasingly difficult to dismiss the stories of so many people who lived the real events with him especially when they come from both the state line and law enforcement side of the story.

Granted, Hathcock was a known criminal, but look at her autopsy report, see how she died and ask yourself what kind of man shoots a women in the back? Now she and Warren Jones came from the law enforcement side of the story. Is their word not as good as Pusser's?

As for Pauline's death, yes there is some prood available. Had you bothered to examine the photos of the ambush you would see things that are inconsistant with Pusser's stories. He was aware that that the Pussers were separated at the time of the ambush. If they were separated, why was Pauline with Buford at 5:00am instead at home with the children. DO SOME RESEARCH

To me, the greatest B movie ever made. While everyone goes on and on about how it is not historicly accurate, remember, it's not a documentary. I've watched this film over my dad's shoulder when I was a kid. To me, what makes the film great is that everything seems possible in real life. Films these days call for complete suspension of disbelieve. I know Pusser faces very long odds, but he takes huge losses himself. Films now show the hero taking on 100 guys and coming away unscathed.

There is no known record, police report or medical document to prove that Buford was ever attacked and cut up as was shown in the movie. He claimed it took 192 stitches to close the wounds on his head and face. Funny thing is photos taken shortly after the alleged attack show no scaring to his head of face. There was a book about Pusser way back in the late 60s (or thereabouts) but I cannot recall the name. It might be a pretty good one. It had a bunch of photos of the family variety so I believe it was authored by someone reliable. There was also a hardback photo album released about ten or fifteen years ago by his family that also had his story in it.

Agreed, its not unusual at all. But for them to take the liberties they did and then call it a "true story" is rediculous. For instance, when Buford went back to rob the club he went alone with only a stick to take on ten or twelve state liners. In real life, he took if friends Jerry Wright and Marvin King Jr with him and the three of them beat up one man, W.O. Hathcock. Hathcock never accused Pusser of beating him with a stick.., he accused Marvin King Jr. So where is the "true story"?

Sheriff Buford Pusser , McNairy County TN. Pauline Pusser was allegedly killed in the ambush on 8/12/67 that was meant for him. I have photos of the car taken after the ambush that raise many questions regarding Pauline's death. Many locals that I have interviewed claim that Buford murdered his wife and blamed the state liners as Pauline was about to divorce him and expose his corruption (pay offs etc) Crimemyths has audio files of some of the real people telling some of what they know.

Alleged killed? I believe she was killed. And as far as the locals, did anyone witness the shooting or is this just their beliefs? Why wasn't that mentioned at the time? How was he shot in the face? Plus, 42 years later is alot to ask of someone's memory. The police call that a dead case. If there was a case, I'm sure it would have been made then. I don't think many people would be willing to shoot themselves like that and all the other times that he was shot that you question to be a "hero".

I meant to say alleged ambush. No witnesses. As a matter of fact Buford Suffered eight bullet wounds from three different alleged attacks. There were never ant witnesses, no arrests and all the wounds except for the one to the jaw were superficial.
Of the seven stab wounds, only one witness, the county coroner, who said the stabbing DID NOT happen, no arrests and all of the wounds were superfical. TBI will not release file as it is an open case. It was mentioned then.

So he shot himself the other times? How many police officers are in shootings every year with no witnesses? Without cameras, the rest of us would have no idea what happened. Why would the County Coroner say the stabbings didn't happen? The Coroner only investigates homicides, not aggravated assaults. The stabbings are from an open case? The report says the cause of death was the first shot the entered the left jaw and went out the back of the head. The second shot hit her in the back of the head and the third shot was in the abdomen. They were all called distant shots by the coroner, hardly an execution. He fires 3 rapid shots after she shoots at him, hits her jaw, she spins and the next shot hits the back of her head and the third in the abdomen. First of all Buford described the order of shots fired.., shoulder, back torso, head. Secondly, people don't "spin around" when shot as the bullet velocity is too great, thats all movie stuff. Other witnesses at the scene talked about teeth being impacted in the carpet, which indicates that she was on the floor when shot in the head, thats when the doctor agreed the head shot could be interpreted that way. You wouldn't make much of a lawyer as you clearly didn't check out the evidence.

You failed to comment on the fact that no other LEO was ever attacked as Buford was or that all of his gunshot wounds were too the left side of the body. As for the Coroners statement, he was at a house fired where people had died, Buford was directing traffic t the scene when he stopped a car he thought looked overloaded and suspected to be hauling booze, thats when and why the stabbing took place,. LEO is normally used in print. In almost 15 years, I've never met an officer that refers to himself as a law enforcement officer. Corrections officers use that to skirt around the impersonating charge and get out of a ticket. I have worked in 3 different states from Ohio to Georgia. All my agencies have a high crime rate. I was offered promotions to stay at each one, so don't give me the BS about "why so many". In my time as a Sgt. I saw quite a few homicides. As far as the autopsies go

Update: This past week I spoke with Dr Jerry Francsico, former TN State Medical Examiner . Dr Francisco said that TBI Investigator Warren Jones had Francisco accompany him to the ambush sites as he (Jones) had suspicions of Pusser's involvement in Paulines death. Local authorities never requested an autopsy on Pauline and there was no protocol in place to do one otherwise. Investigator Jones was aware of the Pusser's marital problems and separation.

Jeff, for what is worth, I still enjoy the movie. Its one of my favorites. After being a Buford Pusser fan for so many years I was disappointed in him when I learned what I believe is the truth. Its difficult to argue with the facts found in autopsy reports, photos and other documentaion. I also find it increasingly difficult to dismiss the stories of so many people who lived the real events with him especially when they come from both the state line and law enforcement side of the story.

Granted, Hathcock was a known criminal, but look at her autopsy report, see how she died and ask yourself what kind of man shoots a women in the back? Two days before shooting Hathcock Pusser is alleged to have told Hathcock that she was going to have to pay more to continue to operate...she refused and was killed 2 days later. By Tennessee law, the local M.E. and the District Attorney General had to agree to request an autopsy by the state. both were friends of Pusser. Warren Jones was aware that Buford and Pauline were separated, it was part of his investigation. Pauline's best friend, the wife of one of Buford's deputies also has stated they were separated. Now she and Warren Jones came from the law enforcement side of the story. Is their word not as good as Pusser's?

Hey BOXERVOLS, Olin "Sonny" Davis of the Selmer PD stated in the Condo News that Pusser was selling drugs. Warren Jones of the TBI had concerns and suspected Pusser in the ambush. State Medical Examiner Dr Jerry Francisco's autopsy report shows that Pusser shot Louise Hathcock in the back twice. Keep in mind that forensic investigation back then was NOT what it is today, You don't seem to have any concept whatsoever as to what a homicide entails. I know they are not all lying to me. Well you see mike i have a life! i dont have time to read a bunch of bull shit that does not matter. maybe howard carroll was a liar to mike ever think that. I dont like dirty cops mike like you1 Iknow for a fact that criminals lie to protect themselves also cops lie to mike. It seems to me they were all liars cheaters. Well you see Boxervols, you claim to have a life only because because you don't have ANY answers. You say you don't have time to read, that all of this is BS and it doesn't matter. Your right that people lie including cops and Buford has been caught in a bunch. Sure, your defending Pusser, read your own posts, you can at least read that much can't you? These people don't go public with their stories because people, like you, prejudge them BEFORE they even speak, just as you have already done.

My point is that a jury found OJ innocent in the murders of his wife and Ron Goldman even though the general public was convinced for the most part thought he was guilty. You thought OJ was guilty and you said he had better liars (lawyers). Whats so different about Pusser? He had a movie company to lie for him and fabricate a legend for him, do you believe his legend is true? Do you real believe everyone is lying (including police officers) when they said Pusser was on the take?

OJ admitted to the killings in his book. Why would Buford murder louise as yo call it if she was giving him $1500 a month that doesn't make sense to me.There is no proof that Buford killed Pauline just your speculation. Why didnt these police officers step up and do something about it.

Why don't you read the posts instead of asking so many questions? It would be a lot faster! Hathcock was about to loose the Shamrock because of tax issues. Pusser is said to have known that she kept a large amount of money hidden at the motel. This was his last chance to get to the money before the IRS moved in. This has been discussed in at least 2 books that I am aware of. If you are so interested in all of this why don't you do more research? Are you too lazy?

As for Pauline's death, yes there is some prood available. Had you bothered to examine the photos of the ambush you would see things that are inconsistant with Pusser's stories. Warren Jones of the TBI suspected Pusser but did get the cooperation of certain local authoritites during the investigation. He was aware that that the Pussers were separated at the time of the ambush. If they were separated, why was Pauline with Buford at 5:00am instead at home with the children. DO SOME RESEARCH

Lazy i work 12 hrs a day so im not lazy. I dont have time to set at a computer like you mike. i have looked at the photos of the car not one thing says buford killed here.If warren jones got the cooperation as you suggest why didnt he arrest buford. Is there a law that say they couldnt be together if they were separated maybe they were trying to work it out. Tell me the books you are referring to. Ill bet one of them is by barbara bivins right.

Yes, LAZY. Don't you think I was working when I researched all of this? You want to render an opinion and argue without doing any real reseach. Some one else did that recently..,speaking without knowing the facts, who was that?..., Oh yeah, it was President Obama on the Gates arrest. Jones had his suspicions as did others but he failed to get the cooperation locally to make an arrest. Just because Pusser wasn't proven guilty doesn't mean he was innocent now does it? DO SOME RESEARCH!!!

As for the books you asked about, 12th of August, State line Mob, Buford, Mississippi Mud, Dixie Mafia, Buford Pusser the Blood and Thunder years all have some information. "Tommy and Me" by Barbara Bivins didn't really address the ambush.
You seem to think that because Pusser wasn't arrested or convicted that he didn't commit the crime yet you think OJ Simpson was guilty even though a jury said otherwise. Its all about INFORMED OPINIONS. Get informed ..., PLEASE.

I would like to see Obama "Walk Tall" by presenting a long form birth certificate which shows the Hospital where he was born and the doctor who delivered him.
So much for having a constitution if it says a person has to be a natualized citizen to be president, but makes no prevision for having a candidate prove they are.
Every candidate should be required by law to submit a ling form B.C. before they can register in each primary election.

Again, Pusser was going to raise what she had to pay. She had refused when he told her his plan. Two days later Pusser returns to the Shamrock. She asked to see him in her private quarters, shots were fired. Even if she did pull a gun on Buford, Buford had forced the play. Was he going to be honest and tell investigators why she pulled a gun? Either way, he could now search the premises. Sorry its not as neat as you would like.

If you don't understand the dynamics of the story, and apparently you don't, you would have no reason to suspect Pusser. It seems that all you know is what the movie showed, and that was all B.S. WHY DON'T YOU JUST RESEARCH THE TRUE STORY??? Talk to people who were there? Look at photos & documentation. How doe YOU explain two shots in the back and the head shot that is consistant with Hathcock being on the floor when she was shot ?

I'm sorry that this is a little more complicated than a movie. Yes, its too bad that all of this is a little complicated and that what many people know (or think they know) is from a movie that was dramatized to make the sheriff a hero. I'm talking real life crime here..., your still all about trying to justify the movie version of Sheriff Pusser...we are talking apple and oranges.

Hey gipper, What the yahoo groups froum crimemyths promotes is not rumor. We use documents such as Louise Hathcock's Autopsy report to show that Pusser shot her in the back twice before shooting her in the head, most likely while she lay on the floor. We have statements from law enforcement, stateliners and even Pusser friends to back what we say re: payoffs. FBI, TBI doucumments etc. Our only agenda is finding the truth. Settle for a false legend if you want gipper. Pusser was no hero.
