The bad thing about older steam powered machines is that they used reglar boilers, which where big and heavy. Now days we have flash boilers which are small and compact and more effective then a regular boiler.
With flash boiler these machines would be the size of a car and have 500 horsepowers
@RoadCaptainEntertain haha! right? If the driver ever slipped and fell, the pulleys gears and flywheels would chew him up and toss him out on the ground.
Unfortunately if anything broke you would have to buy china made parts, since all the steel mills that put this thing together are long gone... Not to mention any other company that had a hand in it has guaranteed changed hands to some jap company..
@fizzguts So what you're saying is you can list a dozen different Mills in the USA? Ones that produce US Steel? Not places that make things out of imported products... hell i bought a TV stand that says made in china on the box, but i put it together.. SO i guess by your method it is made here too... Right?
@TheManInDboX manta .com Forgings Iron & Steel over 46 entries and that doesn't even scratch the surface
How about US Steel in Gary, River Rouge,Granite city?
Cast iron which the Holt uses. Dozens of small to medium casting and foundries such as Pier Foundry exist in the USA 20 seconds with Google would have told you all this.
You are an embarrassment . Did you sleep through history and geography or were you to busy learning how to say "you want fries with that"
@fizzguts You are correct "Us Steel" Still exists, they produce less then 10% of the steel in the USA. They produced in 1901 about 67% of the steel in the US. So that tells me that you would need to get parts from elsewhere, since they do not produce excess. Supply and demand, Simple economics my friend.. Actually if you look deeper which i am sure you will, the Sumitomo company of Mexico supplies ALL of the US auto manufacturers with their steel..
@TheManInDboX Sigh This is a REPRODUCTION built in the USA 2005-2008 from parts made by local foundries and by fabrication. If anything broke Don Hunter who built the replica would fix it. Which is why your original post was complete moose drool
What a beautiful bit of nostalgia in this tractor and plow. On the other hand, this is the kind of farm machinery that would kill you if given half a chance. Old time farmers were a brave lot.
your are right, never came on my mind but at the time this machine is made ,only rich or prosper will afford it and whoevr made it will not care about those who worked around or operate it, an example of the early american dream works.
hmmm.....is this a reproduction of the first caterpillar tractor? i remember the story of 2 farmers trying to find a way to keep their steam tractors from sinking into the soil around stockton california. they kept making the wheels longer and longer but nothing worked. when one of them came up with tracks, someone said it looked like a caterpillar walking along the ground

@DirTyOhGee yeah, and the funny thing is that we can mass produce hybrids but not steam engines
drh1111 1 year ago
@drh1111 yup...huge oil company's cant make profit from steam. Its a crime against the earth and the people on it and all in the name of profit.
DirTyOhGee 1 year ago
@DirTyOhGee sense you think the same as i do you should know that diesel exhaust is cleaner than gas exhaust
QOTD: Can you put any kind of water in a steam engine, Like salt and lake water?
drh1111 1 year ago
@drh1111 Is it really??? You wouldn't know it by how it smells so bad!!! lol...but I lOVE the sound of the engines.
DirTyOhGee 1 year ago
@drh1111 that will corrode the cylinders very badly...desalinize the water first.
I've never owned a steame engine, but I know a friend who made oen and made the same mistake.

@sw8741 According to a book in my collection, it was the inventors daughter who first said it looked like a caterpillar.
