@UCL2004 the first version of non-studio sultans of swing was in Alchemy live in 1983. The first live of Alchemy tour! there is also the dvd from Hammersmith Odeon.
Whenever I listen to this song, it makes me happy to think that I still have the sense to appreciate such beautiful composition. Alas!!! we don't get to hear these sounds anymore.
mark, i think it is a tribute to us -your ever lasting fans- to perform with dire straits-in your greatest period evewr. It's up to you to find the portions that must be neeDED between Dire Straits and your new band,Don;t be -ripsaspis-in ancient sparta this waw committed with excille.iHN MODERN EUROPE THIS MUST BE TREATED SIMEHOW IN A SIMILAR AND DISCENT WAY. mk from greece.
@knopflerbest LIKE haha, it would be more effective if it had the actual live video just to show how effortless he makes it look but it doesn't appear the video exsists anywhere in the world which is a shame
Yo kids, we had shite music in the 70's and 80's too - you just don't hear about those performers any more. I remember when I was 13 or 14, first hearing Dire Straits, how that felt, and my age-mates looking down their noses at me because I wasn't listening to Wham and Duran Duran. I'm 41 now, and I'll probably still be listening to this stuff when I'm dozing in my oldies home. Mr. Knopfler just seems to get better with age.
sometimes i get the feeling that mark has 2 extra fingers on each hand and sometimes i think if he just looks at a guitar, it will play all by itself.
great version..been looking for this one for a while, thanks.
Can not get enough. I'm currently taking guitar lessons because of this guy and his ability to make a guitar work like a slave and produce some of the fliest music known to those delicate tools on the side of your head..........EARS!!!!!!!Bravo Mark.......
Gotta mention Chet Atkins on this one. He is the one guy all the 80's guitarists looked up to. And MK was a great admirer of his. He also performed with him twice and played at the tribute concert to Chet Atkins. If you can ever find a clip of the two of them playing together, watch their playing styles, very, very similar.
Thanks for this post. This guy is hands down the f___ing greatest. Because of him I'm now taking guitar lessons. He pours his hands and soul into that guitar. One day I might see him. Keep the MK guitar vids coming.....
Jamas volveran los dedos de knopfler a moverse así de rápido.... una lástima....¿ Os imaginais que en la gira de 2010 Get Lucky sonara así el Sultans ?
bufffff.... me daria algo seguro. En fin.. de ilusión tambien se vive.

interesting hollow sound in the strings, almost like one's loose... great minor hops and rhythmic innovations.... really natural... truly a swingin' sultan solo! as for the clappers, well... they're the type who talk in the "sensitive" moments they miss throughout their lives. They think they're "THERE!" Well, they aren't 'cause they're never really anywhere when they aren't inside themselves. Agree with Skeeterboot on that: just plain dumb people. And rude too!
I'm 19, and agree with devilbex all the way. I am ashamed of the music that the music industry shells out. No talent, no creativity, no insight... just a puppet rapper who fulfills a certain persona that the record label wants him or her to fill.
@YeaSon2008 I agree with you and devilbex 100%. "Music" these days is crap. I'm a 12 year old kid who just loves the 60's, 70's, 80's and a little bit of the 90's. Mark Knopfler is just one heck of a guy! He really knows his stuff. Not like these ghetto rappers who have no talent what so ever. I'm happy to hear another person think the same way.
@EaglesStir There are many people thinking like you Boy... Many... But we are living the Age of Crap, when there is not space for music like was done by Mark Knopfler... Even the live version of this music, you will not listen on Radio, just because "it´s too long". Short crap, that is all we have...
@EaglesStir You mean "commercial" music is crap. There is plenty of incredible talent out there, it's just getting harder to find because of the whole mainstream having no taste.
@YeaSon2008 true! I'm 19,too man ^^ and the more "new music" there is..the older is the music i listen to. when music wasnt about image or money it was genuine..and that makes music good. greetz from germany ^^
This is the track 5 from the Mark Knopfler At The Royal Albert Hall (1996) : "comes from the official album "Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of DS", but it's only the bonus CD - not available in many countries, cover says "This recording was made for a live US radio broadcast by Album Network at the Royal Albert Hall, London on 23rd May 1996. Tracks have not been remixed, overdubbed or altered in any way".
i just wish those stupid "clappers" would have sense enough to let the music unfold!!!! fuckin' distractin' and annoying!!! totally in awe of this piece. thanks sooooo much for sharing. pure genius!!!
I understand and totally agree with Mr Angus when he say that this is it the best version of Sultans of Swing ever. We are not talking about speed or virtuosism, but about a version full of new inserctions, beautiful melodies, a magic mixture of all the versions that Knopfler played along his awesome career. A really genius! In my opnion the best guitarist of all times. Thanks for posting.
