Brando is telling him sheer truth. We all have our roles we play, everyday and in different situations. If it is in us to do that, then we can all act too. But some of us operate in the real world better than others, and subsequently there are better players too.
People paint Brando as somewhat pompous or grumpy but I think he was just very uncomfortable in his own skin. I don't think he meant to be a dick, I think he was just socially awkward. He talks about acting as a defense mechanism, and he was a phenomenal actor. I don't think he was as high and mighty as people think, I think he was just proud of the craft that enabled him to be a different person for a while. He always looks very uncomfortable speaking as himself
@blood1money@malows1234 directors can make a movie to remain as a star in our minds ....but stars are different ...especially Brando...i think i would have had same respect and admiration for Brando even if he had not done movies with the most respected directors of his time...i think Brando alone needn't respect directors ...i do respect them though
who gives a fuck about stories/whatever. i care about this interview. fuck the rest of his career. this interview was good and i found it interesting. i don't even give a shit about brando, i really don't. but this interview was cool.

I skipped from part 1 to part 3, hoping that the initial awkwardness and endless servile flattery would have subsided. Unfortunately, it hasn't really. It seems it's really hard to get past the incredible presence that Marlon Brando has. I'm hoping by parts 4 or 5, or at least 6, that this will become a more natural open conversation, and not just some long running judgement about the value of talk shows.
Take it from an up and coming struggling actor... that what Marlon is able to do, is because he has prepared for it for a very long time. He worked tirelessly to be honest, to be completely human. It's not to say he is perfect, because human's are not perfect. But to walk in to a 100+ audience set, and stare down every camera in the house... and just be himself. That takes a lot of time getting there. He was a beautiful, beautiful human being. And a force of nature.
@Chomskola1979 Marlon Brando never was a struggling actor, the only thing he struggled with was the emptiness of being the best at it no sooner than he started. To his own self he was just a man and acting wasn't difficult; to everyone else he was an acting genius who owed the world his performance. The fact is that he was a being for whom the river ran deep, but his 'audience' could only tolerate screen depth. No feigned bemusement, but rather a patent contempt for paddling in the shallows.
Hes hardly arguing against lying since he says its a necessary survival technique. Brando's feigned bemusement smacks of all celebrities who "simply can't believe it" when people don't listen to them speak about issues or operate in a different artform to which they are famous for, now that requires some serious self deception about the way in which they obtained their fame in the first place. I very much doubt he would have "dominated the interview" when he was a young struggling actor
More people should become more cognizant and aware of the damn issues that are really addressing this country. Instead we coddle our children, keep them from becoming aware of the real things concerning our society and have them live in some fantasy world built by their families in order to make them think that everything is here for their needs and their requirements.

Cavette was a great interviewer. Marlon would fucked with anybody that's the way hewas. He had great respect for Cavette, you guys dissing Cavette are idiots.
I absolutely agree about what he says about acting in our every day lives. It's very difficult to deal with a person who doesn't want to act. We're use to it and we can't take in people who don't want to play those games. It's so rare people that are totally honest we don't believe them for one and we don't know how to respond to them. I am seeing more and more in business people who will utterly lie to your face as a habit. And you can prove they are lieing but they will not back up!
@sckvevrbdy why? he let him speak. a lot of talk show hosts interupt their guests all the time. Cavett realized that Brando wanted to talk about some serious issues, so he gave him way to do so.

@sausageNmash1990 Well few men today questions or wonders what is our role in society. amazing how some ppl here are calling brando arrogant, and a jerk. when it is mr dick (perfect name) who is constantly throwing jabs at brando on national tv. this is exactly the kind of fuckery brando is trying to talk about here, every thing brando says dick tries to 1 up him. dick cant handle the fact brando called him to tell him how fake he is. and even on the show to his face, and brando still gets called the bad guy?? amazing
@11nahyt are you people blind??? or certainly not watching the same program. Dick Cavett is in TOTAL awe of this man, you can tell in every sentence he speaks. I think hes completely respectful, but he is also a professional, he knows that he needs to evoke a certain responce so that it creates good television. I think Marlon Brando (with exception to Jesus) is the most wonderfully complex man to walk this earth, i also feel Dick shares that view.
@sheepthehack nope clearly u are. u seriously need some classes on how to spot honesty vs sarcasm. this dick dude. is clearly throwing jabs at brando. i dont find dick to be in awe , i just find him very smug abut the fact that he runs the show and brando has to answer the questions. and since brando wont play that game as easily dick finds ways to force a reaction out of brando . i see nothing respectfull in that, u are soo blind u cant even seem to read body language right either
Im pretty sure that Dict Cavett is just nervous as hell because Marlon was giving so much atmosphere off with his sheer presence, the fact that Marlon simply was unfazed by Dicks attempt for humor must have been horrifying for an interview.
Marlo is an incredible actor.....i just would never want to interview the man.
Pure exhaustiveness and awkwardness....Marlo was definitely a one of a kind.
@Tim33ist i think it would have been exhilarating to interview him if you brought a similar enthusiasm for deciphering some truth from human experience, contempt for dis-ingenuity .
@11nahyt I wont call Brando the bad guy. But I dont have a problem with Dick Cavett holding his own. This is Dick's show. Marlon is the invited guest. What you call 1 upping, I'd argue that Dick is a smart guy that is in a debate.
@11nahyt shut up, dont pretend to know who brando is, you have no fucking idea who brando is. Dont pretend you do. he is an absolute asshole, cocky and has no respect. i dont give a shit about this interview. Did you know he went on to the set of apocalypse now and told francis coppola that he didn't read the whole script and hasn't even read the whole book. This guy is an asshole to do that to a filmmaker who spent years creating a screenplay, and brando doesn't have the decency to read it.
@malows1234 im not exactly sure why you assume i knew him or anything. because i am simply giving my opinion on whatt I SEE in this interview. i never knew marlon brando on a personal level, and it is not necessary to have known him to see the bullshit thats going on in this video. so i am NOT pretending about anything you dumb fuck.but apparently you THINK you knew brando on a personal level , to be calling him all those names based on a story that you cannot prove if that happened or not
@malows1234 and if you dont "give a shit" about this interview , then why are you here anyways? you seem to give an entire fuck more about this interview than most of the people here.if marlon is an "asshole" then what are you? you take time out of your life to come on this page, to BASH some you dont even fucking know and "dont care about" . and judging him based on word of mouth stories.please take a nice comfy fuckin seat and continue sipping on the stupid juice.
@11nahyt its not word of mouth stories, they came from francis ford coppola, and if you watch the documentary heart of darkness, you will realize the douche bag he was being, when this director was trying hard to make his pasion project. he is an asshole, paramount executives wouldn't even hire his douche bag ass after godfather, THATS HOW MUCH THEY HATE HIM. Francis Coppola wouldn't even hire him, considering coppola revived brando's career: I would say brando is a asshole.disagree, be a fanboi
@Kuti210 A. that was only a distribution deal, not a paramount production itself. B. De Niro was involved in it along with norton. Dont tell me you haven't heard many directors say shit about this guy, this guy is an absolute douchebag professionally. I have heard so many directors complain, even Kazan. AND honestly how can you respect a guy who doesn't have the professional decency to read the book of the film he is about to be in? I want you to answer that question.
@malows1234 because he IS Brando. if everything you've said is right or legit, why is it that every actor after after him (Depp,AL,duvall,Nicholson) have looked up to him?
@BLOOD1MONEY personally i dont give a shit about actors, because they are puppets and pretty things but the truest artists are the writers and directors, and they are the true geniuses in film, and i could care less about actors, because teh great filmmakers like stanley kubrick always pulled great performances out of actors. if brando was a dick to the directors, than he is a dick in my book. i dont give a shit if he is brando, there is no excuse to disrespect your boss(Director).
@malows1234 your too much of an ignorant and just plain stupid fuck to reply to. but you have have no argument by saying "i dont give a shit about actors, because there puppets". answer me this, what would a movie be without actors/actresses?, what would the godfather have been if only the directors and producers worked on it?. then again your just a fag living in mommy's basement so what would you know.
@malows1234 they actually are MORE important because THEY are the ones acting and showing you what the writer/director/producers want. no actors no movies. simple as that.
@BLOOD1MONEY no writers/no directors equals no movie. just putting that out there. cause you might be thinking that movies make themselves. godfather wouldn't exist without francis coppola's brilliance. What would cinema be like without the genius of Stanley Kubrick. i think hitchcock put it best when he said "actor are sheep" , and hitchcock is more important to movies than any actor, and probably more well known than any actor that ever lived. so needless to say directors are important.
@malows1234 kid your just such a stupid faggot, sending me a message trying to be a wise ass lol. no actors no movies, no directors/producers/writers NO MOVIE. its like saying "patients arent important to the health and pharmaceutical field". no patients no doctors no medicine....get it?. i bet if you showed someone coppola's pic and then brando's and then you asked who was who. 80% of the people would know brando and not coppola. get it?.
@BLOOD1MONEY if you asked a bunch of people who is spielberg and then asked them who brando was. 80% more people would know spielberg, so are you trying to make some sort of a point about who is more famous? back in the 40's-50's people cared about actors selectively. but after that the hitchcock's and kubrick, and obviously spielberg, directors make the big bucks, they get the fame. why do u think no great directors picked up brando after the godfather, i know--becuz he was a douche.
@malows1234 Because he is pimp and he dosent give a shit. Hes a hell of a good actor.. why would he need a script in the first place? You are talking about Marlon Motherfucking Brando... the guy is incredible at improvising.
i like the last lines. "well that might not be true but i don't think that I could play some roles as well as you could play them." he sees right through this guy this interviewer guy and it makes him terribly uncomfortable and defensive.
7:12 through to 8:12 was a fascinating, coded conversation. I don't like Brando much, but the obvious intentioned 'schmuck and bore' comment by Dick was way below the belt. That moment of spite and bad grace actually made me feel a little sympathy for The Pretentious One.
1) when he referred to beer drinkers earlier - as an indirect offense that brando's not thinking properly
and 2), when he calls him a bore or a shmug.
And then, number three, is later on, when he gives him a little card, asking him to read the commercial line. the way he presents it to himself, is pretty much the way you give a cookie to a dog. it's horribly, horribly awful way of talking with another human being, and dick deserves to be beat for his arrogancy.
im exactly like brando the way i look at things, my friends dont understand me in any way of the views of life i got, thats why im such a fan of marlon!
Brando is really good at deflecting subjects that he does not want to talk about and is great at manipulating the conversation in the direction he wants to go in. He has Dick Cavett by the balls, squirming. A powerful presence.
@RosieRebel Brando didn't have Dick Cavett by the balls as you say... Cavett in my opinion was one of the greatest interviewers of all time and had shown Brando the greatest of respect. He more than kept up with Brando!
The expression to describe Brando's persona is that he does not suffer fools. Few people live their lives this way, and it can come off as aloof or arrogant but simply put, he does not suffer fools. More people should live their lives this way!
Marlon Brando is enraptured by the beauty of his own reflection in a pool and feel forever in love with his own reflection. Marlon Brando displays an operating style that involves extreme self-involvement, and a grandiose sense of self-importance.
@OregonHerbalist - Curious. He does seem to look down on people and holds himself above that. He is critical too, but many times it is because they themselves are interested in "foolishness" and ignore social issues. Not such a narcissistic thought.
Exactly--Brando was profoundly perceptive and honest as the day is long. It's touching watching him do his best to communicate what he knows is true to people whose minds haven't been opened before. He was real, whole, and deeply compasssionate, tho frustrated with the force of the lies most people are in a trance with. He was awake and alive when so many people live life in a fearful coma.
In The Naked Ape, Desmond Morris (Anthropologist) talks about Marlon ringing him up and wanting to meet him. They did so, and Marlon talked about the human condition and humanity all night. He was a very deep thinker. It consumed him.
WOW! imagine this in 1973, Brando is a very interesting guy, they ended up painting him as a weirdo, but he is clearly a deep thinker. Very courageous. He has been reported to have flaws, but we all are human and make mistakes. At least he tried to do something!
UTOOB???? CAN I LEAVE A COMMENT HERE? IS THAT OK? PRAISING MARLON FOR WHAT HE DID FOR THE NATIVE INDIAN IS A HOT TOPIC? MAYBE i NEED TO SEE WHAT IS GOING ON AT PINE RIDGE SINCE THEY ARE OPERATING INDEPENDENT OF THE US, HAVING PLENTY OF SUPPORT NOW...THANK YOU MARLON FOR THIS AMAZING DISPLAY OF CHARACTER FOR THE SILENCED SIOUX...IT TOUCHED THOSE OF US FORCED INTO THAT SILENCE ALL OUR LIVES AND TOLD US TO BE PROUD IF WE ARE NATIVE INDIAN, OR ANY RACE! BRAVO!
@apollowoman Kindhearted would not be a good way to describe Brando. He was often cruel, self-indulgent and rude. Make no mistake, he used his celebrity as a tool and weapon to combat those that put him on a pedestal he didn't really want.
8:02 "Suppose there's a guy here that I think is a shmuck ... eh ... is a boor." Dick is not pleased with Brando's refusal to cooperate and allow him to have a normal conversation.
@peaceandmetal88 yeh they're both on different wavelengths. Marlon sees acting as, like he said, "a survival mechanism" while Cavett sees it as something totally different, probably as just an occupation. Acting, to Marlon, is being not showing.
@JamesJonathon013 'the survival mechanism' marlon speaks about is what most of us call a job. the problem with most people who aren't actors is that they get the idea that acting is something more than a job. i dont think marlon in any way disrespects his craft but i don't think he takes it tremendously seriously because he knows there's more important things than 'lights'camera'action' when he talks about serious stuff no one takes him seriously. marlon brando..incredible human being.
Do you think he ever knew how brilliant he was?

@sheepthehack nope clearly u are. u seriously need some classes on how to spot honesty vs sarcasm. this dick dude. is clearly throwing jabs at brando. i dont find dick to be in awe , i just find him very smug abut the fact that he runs the show and brando has to answer the questions. and since brando wont play that game as easily dick finds ways to force a reaction out of brando . i see nothing respectfull in that, u are soo blind u cant even seem to read body language right either
11nahyt 5 months ago
Im pretty sure that Dict Cavett is just nervous as hell because Marlon was giving so much atmosphere off with his sheer presence, the fact that Marlon simply was unfazed by Dicks attempt for humor must have been horrifying for an interview.
Marlo is an incredible actor.....i just would never want to interview the man.
Pure exhaustiveness and awkwardness....Marlo was definitely a one of a kind.

@11nahyt I wont call Brando the bad guy. But I dont have a problem with Dick Cavett holding his own. This is Dick's show. Marlon is the invited guest. What you call 1 upping, I'd argue that Dick is a smart guy that is in a debate.
johnisallin 2 months ago
@11nahyt shut up, dont pretend to know who brando is, you have no fucking idea who brando is. Dont pretend you do. he is an absolute asshole, cocky and has no respect. i dont give a shit about this interview. Did you know he went on to the set of apocalypse now and told francis coppola that he didn't read the whole script and hasn't even read the whole book. This guy is an asshole to do that to a filmmaker who spent years creating a screenplay, and brando doesn't have the decency to read it.
malows1234 1 month ago
@malows1234 im not exactly sure why you assume i knew him or anything. because i am simply giving my opinion on whatt I SEE in this interview. i never knew marlon brando on a personal level, and it is not necessary to have known him to see the bullshit thats going on in this video. so i am NOT pretending about anything you dumb fuck.but apparently you THINK you knew brando on a personal level , to be calling him all those names based on a story that you cannot prove if that happened or not
11nahyt 1 month ago
@malows1234 and if you dont "give a shit" about this interview , then why are you here anyways? you seem to give an entire fuck more about this interview than most of the people here.if marlon is an "asshole" then what are you? you take time out of your life to come on this page, to BASH some you dont even fucking know and "dont care about" . and judging him based on word of mouth stories.please take a nice comfy fuckin seat and continue sipping on the stupid juice.
11nahyt 1 month ago
@11nahyt its not word of mouth stories, they came from francis ford coppola, and if you watch the documentary heart of darkness, you will realize the douche bag he was being, when this director was trying hard to make his pasion project. he is an asshole, paramount executives wouldn't even hire his douche bag ass after godfather, THATS HOW MUCH THEY HATE HIM. Francis Coppola wouldn't even hire him, considering coppola revived brando's career: I would say brando is a asshole.disagree, be a fanboi
malows1234 1 month ago
@malows1234 OH REALLY? Cuz i am pretty sure The Score was distributed by Paramount....................
Kuti210 1 month ago
@Kuti210 A. that was only a distribution deal, not a paramount production itself. I want you to answer that question.
malows1234 1 month ago
@malows1234 because he IS Brando. if everything you've said is right or legit, why is it that every actor after after him (Depp,AL,duvall,Nicholson) have looked up to him?
BLOOD1MONEY 1 month ago
@BLOOD1MONEY personally i dont give a shit about actors, because they are puppets and pretty things but the truest artists are the writers and directors, and they are the true geniuses in film, and i could care less about actors, because teh great filmmakers like stanley kubrick always pulled great performances out of actors. if brando was a dick to the directors, than he is a dick in my book. i dont give a shit if he is brando, there is no excuse to disrespect your boss(Director).
malows1234 1 month ago
@malows1234 your too much of an ignorant and just plain stupid fuck to reply to. but you have have no argument by saying "i dont give a shit about actors, because there puppets". answer me this, what would a movie be without actors/actresses?, what would the godfather have been if only the directors and producers worked on it?. then again your just a fag living in mommy's basement so what would you know.
BLOOD1MONEY 1 month ago
@BLOOD1MONEY actors matter, they just aren't as important as directors or producers.
malows1234 1 month ago
@malows1234 they actually are MORE important because THEY are the ones acting and showing you what the writer/director/producers want. no actors no movies. simple as that.
BLOOD1MONEY 1 month ago
@BLOOD1MONEY no writers/no directors equals no movie. just putting that out there. cause you might be thinking that movies make themselves. godfather wouldn't exist without francis coppola's brilliance. What would cinema be like without the genius of Stanley Kubrick. i think hitchcock put it best when he said "actor are sheep" , and hitchcock is more important to movies than any actor, and probably more well known than any actor that ever lived. so needless to say directors are important.
malows1234 1 month ago
@malows1234 kid your just such a stupid faggot, sending me a message trying to be a wise ass lol. no actors no movies, no directors/producers/writers NO MOVIE. its like saying "patients arent important to the health and pharmaceutical field". no patients no doctors no medicine....get it?. i bet if you showed someone coppola's pic and then brando's and then you asked who was who. 80% of the people would know brando and not coppola. get it?.
BLOOD1MONEY 1 month ago
@BLOOD1MONEY if you asked a bunch of people who is spielberg and then asked them who brando was. 80% more people would know spielberg, so are you trying to make some sort of a point about who is more famous? back in the 40's-50's people cared about actors selectively. but after that the hitchcock's and kubrick, and obviously spielberg, directors make the big bucks, they get the fame. why do u think no great directors picked up brando after the godfather, i know--becuz he was a douche.
malows1234 1 month ago
@malows1234 Because he is pimp and he dosent give a shit. Hes a hell of a good actor.. why would he need a script in the first place? You are talking about Marlon Motherfucking Brando... the guy is incredible at improvising.

7:12 through to 8:12 was a fascinating, coded conversation. I don't like Brando much, but the obvious intentioned 'schmuck and bore' comment by Dick was way below the belt. That moment of spite and bad grace actually made me feel a little sympathy for The Pretentious One.

dick offended brando twice:
1) when he referred to beer drinkers earlier - as an indirect offense that brando's not thinking properly
and 2), when he calls him a bore or a shmug.
And then, number three, is later on, when he gives him a little card, asking him to read the commercial line. the way he presents it to himself, is pretty much the way you give a cookie to a dog. it's horribly, horribly awful way of talking with another human being, and dick deserves to be beat for his arrogancy.

Brando is really good at deflecting subjects that he does not want to talk about and is great at manipulating the conversation in the direction he wants to go in. He has Dick Cavett by the balls, squirming. A powerful presence.

Nautilus1972 1 year ago
WOW! imagine this in 1973, Brando is a very interesting guy, they ended up painting him as a weirdo, but he is clearly a deep thinker. Very courageous. He has been reported to have flaws, but we all are human and make mistakes. At least he tried to do something!

apollowoman 1 year ago
@apollowoman Kindhearted would not be a good way to describe Brando. He was often cruel, self-indulgent and rude. Make no mistake, he used his celebrity as a tool and weapon to combat those that put him on a pedestal he didn't really want.

Why is Cavett arguing with Brando on acting, of all things, I mean really? What the fuck...
peaceandmetal88 1 year ago
@peaceandmetal88 yeh they're both on different wavelengths. Marlon sees acting as, like he said, "a survival mechanism" while Cavett sees it as something totally different, probably as just an occupation. Acting, to Marlon, is being not showing.
JamesJonathon013 1 year ago
@JamesJonathon013 'the survival mechanism' marlon speaks about is what most of us call a job. the problem with most people who aren't actors is that they get the idea that acting is something more than a job. i dont think marlon in any way disrespects his craft but i don't think he takes it tremendously seriously because he knows there's more important things than 'lights'camera'action' when he talks about serious stuff no one takes him seriously. marlon brando..incredible human being.
