It's analogous to how the 1980 US Hockey team beat the Soviets when the NHL All Stars couldn't come close. And there are actually quite a few foreign players in MLS, it's just most of them weren't good enough to make European squads. Basically MLS is to European soccer leagues as European basketball leagues are to the NBA.
