Although I'm not a great Gheorghiu fan, I must admit that this finale is superb. Both embody the perfect Roméo and Juliette. What a mastery of their art, the perfect command of their voice. And the music is splendid, esp. in the orchestral closing lines, masterfully and passionately conducted by veteran Plasson. The orchestra deserve full plaudits. Who cares if they take about 10' to die?
Felicitari pentru postarile tale..e minunat sa stii ca cineva se gandeste la muzica de calitate si la frumos...asa vedem si noi ca lumea in care traim are si parti frumoase ...
apparently yes...this is the main reason of her stepping out of Carmen: Don Jose is Alagna...still she will sing in Carmen having Kaufmann as Jose...there are already rumors about something between them :)))
While I realize that for the sake of music/singing together, Juliette needs to wake up before Romeo dies, I think it's much sadder in Shakespeare's original play. But musically, that would have been anticlimactic, I suppose.
That was so good! I watched w/ a friend, so I had to translate the French, but it was still so powerful that, by the end, I was on the edge of tears and she had to keep reminding me to translate.
this isn't how it really goes but its pretty close, I like juliet's death part its always really well acted, its like the most valuable female acting role ever. It still works though, your way. And it still has all the great drama!!!
Yes well if he had followed the original we wouldn't get to see them sing and die together! :) I cry almost every time. I saw him do this at the Met last month with Anna Netrebko and it was AMAZING. They were amazing. *sniff*
Is that really all you can say after watching that? That's your reaction? Aside from the fact that they sang gorgeously and with tremendous feeling and sincerity, where do you think you will find today, or at any time for that matter, teen agers who can sing like that?
I didn't really think I was being defensive. I was struck, in light of the outstanding performance, that the one thing you felt prompted to comment on was that they look too old. They look as young as or younger than any pair of singers that could be gathered to sing the roles today. After all, this is opera. Your comment stands out and begs a reply because in opera the singers almost never look the age of the characters they are playing.
I don't exactly listen to opera, and even though I do appreciate it, it's not something I would want to put in my ipod. I discovered this while trying to look for the French musical called Romeo et Juliette. And the first thing I thought was, they look old. Hence forth. I typed it up. Thank you for sharing your feelings. I see you are someone who really aprreciates opera, and o that, I say great.
This is really great performance and it is a pitty for me that I couldn´t be there.

Romeo et Juliette where Romeo's part is sung by Roberto Alagna is excellent and worth listening to.
