@miniclip78 if its new, the OS (operating software) is probably 3.1.2, however that doesnt determine what generation your hardware is. if it came with earphones that have a mic and volume control on cable, its probs 3rd gen. 3rd gen is same size physically as 2nd, but 1st is larger.

Ok I know this sounds bad but im 100% Serious im not trying o screw up your ipod or anything but i have a ipod touch 3rd gen and by accident i was rebooting my ipod with blackra1n while synching it with Itunes the ipod went into DFU mode and then rebooted as normal. Several days later I got afc2add in cydia and I had to reboot and guess what IT REBOOTED WITH OUT BLACKRA1N Im serious try it.

Ok, the reason yours doesnt boot up, untethered is because, the 3rd gen 8gb ipod touch's kernal has been patched, thus making untethereing ipod touch 3g 8gb ipod unlock proof. Untill someone gets around this, me and you are gonna have to deal with stand-by-mode
