Watching this again in 2011, it is still funny.

Yet watching an animated version of this, remade note by note, falls flat...

The fact is, I would never have seen this if not for Seth McFarlane. That's not a bad thing. Why would it be? Family Guy educates me on pop culture I never knew about. He respects pop culture and gives it a comedic spin that will entertain a new audience. These aren't the 60's anymore. Comedy is different. You need to accept that, all those who can't seem to get out of the era they grew up in. Hell, even Friends and Frasier are losing their comedic value.
