  • Superior, definitive version. No question.

  • This version SLAYS the other.

  • I think this demo even sound better than the album version

  • @squirtkiller Just watched another video where Westerberg says they got caught up in the overproduction that was typical of 80's music, and how he wishes he could go back and remix it all by stripping it down. This is probably what he'd like ti all to sound like. It really does sound better than the album version. So much cleaner.

  • Replace this with Does Of Thunder and Tim becomes the best album ever released.

  • These lyrics are better, even if it is about suicide. So much more relatable and honest.

Plus I don't like the horns on the later one..

  • I like the Pleased to Meet Me version but this one is great. Paul Westerberg talked once about how overproduced things got in the 80's and the Pleased to Meet Me version of Can't Hardly Wait seems that way compared to this version. This version seems much more powerful without the horns and strings of the later versions.

  • @rocketsjudoka I would argue that the PTMM version is much more subtly produced and is effective precisely because it is so understated. The horns could have been brought up much prominently in the mix and ever featured more prominently in the song itself but they chose to hold back and deliver with a simple yet delightful and melodic song. The song is really a testament to truly great and inspired rock and roll music and in that way very much sets itself apart from much of 80s popular music.

  • To me, this is the best version, both lyrically and the mix of the guitars. I have P.W. playing it live on SNL - I don't think it's on youtube, if anyone wants me to post it respond and I will

  • @plokmji How could anyone NOT want you to post it?! Post, post, post!

  • @plokmji dooooo it.

  • @MrVapourtrails Now I can't seem to find it...but search: dailymotion snl westerberg and you'll get it

  • this is like the holy grail of demos.

  • I dislike this song because everything else sucks.

  • The raw emotion here is far fucking better! But still... "I'll write you a letter tomorrow, tonight I can't hold a pen." <3

  • @OobyScoobyDoomsday nice!!!!!!!! well put ......really

  • Geez Man, Tune the damn guitars!

  • I love rap and metal the most(like pantera and metallica) no im not 15 years old. This song and band are awesome. This was a awesome high school song. Dealing with relationships, parent issues, or just debating wtf you are doing sometimes. This song made it all ok, tomorrow is coming, you will be happier. I can't wait for someone to be happier, this song is about being free, being in love, being young, being in highschool, being misunterstood. Hang in there LIFE IS WORTH IT, LOVE YOUrRSELF

  • 'til its over....

  • so much better then any other version

  • It is not possible for a sane person to dislike this song!!!!

  • to me this version of the song is the peak of The 'Mats

  • to me this version of the song is the peak of The 'Mats

  • ...crushes the PTMM version like a grape.

  • OMG so much better than the PTMM cut.

  • @Yojimbo335 Agreed, and I'm sure Paul would agree as well. This has so much more honesty too it, while the PTMM-version is more like another pop tune. But the PTMM-version is great as well.

  • @Apanzon There's another version called the "Tim" version that has the same lyrics from the PTMM version, but the horns are not there and the guitar is more rough than on the PTMM version. I actually like that version the best myself. I like the lyrics on this version, but I think Paul's overall delivery is smoother on the other lyrics.

  • @leminyelloblak There is also a great version from the deluxe edition of Tim, with these lyrics and with strings.

  • @Apanzon Interesting... I don't believe I've heard that one. I'll have to investigate. Thanks!

  • @leminyelloblak And there's of course an acoustic version among the bonus tracks as well.

  • @Apanzon yeah, I heard that one recently... pretty bad a**!

  • The two greatest things to come out of the North Country: Bob Dylan and The Replacements.

  • the Bob version.

    7 cunts and counting.

if you do not like this,i pity you.

  • 'lesser known' yet has about 3 times as many views as the PTTM version haha. also, the ones that alex chilton produced are the best, even better than this one.

  • So, so very good.

  • "I'll be sad and happy................I can't wait, hardly wait, i can't wait" Just found out im going to be a dad, im so fuckin happy :) i'm ecstatic XD Might call him Tim lol

  • Great version but the best one is on the Shit Hits the Fans cassette.

  • @diseasefreeforall Yeah... and the one on the "Shit, Shower and Shave" tape is f**king great too. Even though it was minus Bob; they were nuts-on in that recording.

  • Yeah it's official...I like this version best

  • I just don't get how this version didn't make the cut compared to the shity version on please to meet me, saxes and horns don't belong in a replacements song

  • @asscracka19 I like the PTMM version just fine; the horns work & even the strings are ok. That said, this version is superior and it's a shame it didn't make it on to Tim -- but at least we get to enjoy both versions now.

  • This is rock and roll!

  • Greatest band of all time.

  • @cossack77 ... hell yeah!!

  • Such a great song (both versions). Btw, Tim was 1985, PTMM was 1987.

  • This version is so much more Replacements than the other one. My favorite song of all time.

  • Haha, at first I thought is said "Drunk Version". I was eager to listen.

  • this is the best, most rockin' version, of this song ever... one of my favorite songs [if not the] of all times!

  • Thank god the PTMM version ended up getting made. The PTMM version is such a happy song. This not so much.... (great instrumentally though)

  • not the same without the horns

  • Vastly superior version to the "Please To Meet Me" version, but the producers said Tim had too many songs about death.

  • God, this is beautiful. Maybe my favorite song ever.

  • What is the deal with the cover art for the album "Tim"? It looks like it is supposed to have some kind of meaning. Or at least that it was chosen for reasons beyond just looking cool.

  • @Salix800 If you find out, let me know!

I remember in an interview Paul Westerberg mentioned how bad the cover work on Tim was.

  • Comment removed

  • If they combined the instrumentals of this version with the vocals of the PTMM version....Orgasms everywhere.

  • I remember the first time I heard this version on their greatest hits album. It sounded so odd not to hear the more cleaned up (and horns section) version From Please To Meet Me. But as time went on,I grew to love this version as much as the more familiar counterpart. I can honestly say that they're both amazing versions and are good enough to stand on their own. It almost seems like to different songs all together, now that I listen to this....if that makes any sense. Both fantastic though!

  • @robpen954 compared to one on pleased to meet me, this version has just a few different lines that completely change the song. (they didn't need two songs about suicide on ptmm!) there's a haunting acoustic version that was recorded as a demo as well and is out on the tim reissue.

  • The two people who clicked "dislike," really? You dislike this song or were you drunk and hit the wrong button?

  • @originalfergdou Seriously stfu, do you know how many people make that joke on the internet. Yes I am being touchy, but you are being a generic retard.

  • @originalfergdou That's Bob Mould logging in under a bunch of different accounts

  • @originalfergdou they weren't drunk. a drunk person would never click dislike on a replacements video.

  • @originalfergdou I think they just didn't like the song too much, it's fine.

  • where can i find this version? what album is it on?

  • @neatneatneat815 Its on the album called Tim

  • @neatneatneat815 this is not on Tim, it's on All For Nothing Nothing For all

  • This is like, the best thing ever.

  • I love this. I love the Replacements and I love Paul Westerberg. I think he's definitely underrated!

  • Where the hell has THIS been?!

  • WHERE CAN I FIND THIS!?!?!?

  • Try downloads.nl

  • I first head this on Pandora last night. It said that it was the "Tim Version" i think this is the right one doesn't matter though its still great.

  • the best version of this song is paul westerberg's on snl after the replacements it conbinnes the arrangements of the one in PTMM with the edge of this one. I still like the other one more

  • You can definitely hear the Bob influence on this track with the loose, raw guitar sound.

The beginning of the end after Bob was sacked. Sad but true.

  • the music on this version is much more "Replacement" then the horn version on the album. However, the album lyrics in the first verse captured more of Paul's angst......"Write you a letter tomorrow....tonight I can't hold a pen.....does someone got a stamp that I can borrow...I promise not to blow the address again.." It is all about a love untold explained through the eyes of someone drinking maybe to rember ..maybe to forget....classic 'Mats.....

  • Dude, I've been trying to find this song since I saw a commercial with this version of the song on it. It was in the 90's. I only remembered "I'll be there in an HOUR" and always searched for it, but found nothing. Years later I got the replacements compilation of years of songs, and I recognized the "Can't Hardly Wait" song, but the lyrics weren't right! Man, so confusing that there are 2 different versions. SO GLAD I FOUND THIS FINALLY THOUGH!!

  • There was a similar version of this song, live on Letterman, here on YouTube but its gone. If anyone has it, It would be great to have it back. I think this song works much better electrified. Thanks!

  • @tljan the SNL performance can still be found on google video. just search paul westerberg snl cant hardly wait. great version!

  • @kbrinson85 - excellent, thanks!

  • Amazing.

  • In all Paul's interviews now, he is pretty sure that the "5 guitar stuff" was there but not meant to be used. They were guide tracks or fillers while playing...but they all wound up on the album. Paul is still pissed about this album. I think this is much closer to his vision (much more Tim like).

  • This is great to hear. You can imagine the evolution of the song. I can picture Paul with an acoustic guitar, writing the song and I wonder if there is a demo of that. The final version with the horns, strings and high production value is enjoyable, too, but this version has a lot of passion and soul. Fantastic!

  • The lyrics and the harder edge really work this version to its full potential.

  • toppermost of the rockermost.

  • Still one of my all-time faves. Just amazing!

  • Bob's guitar work was amazing, especially the repeated run at the end of the song.

  • best version and the version i heard first for some reason

  • this song is so much better this way.. sure is a classic this way

  • Comment removed

  • Never heard this version before...both have their strong points, but gotta say this is more true to the Replacements sound....

  • i saw them in 1984, they were totally wasted, barely finished a number!

  • "Tim" wasn't released until 1985, and "Pleased To Meet Me" was released in 1987.

  • @jryan1971 The reason the photo is the album cover for "Tim" is that it was originally written for "Tim" The remastered and reissued version of "Tim" includes this song and a Westerberg-solo demo version as bonus tracks.

  • @elwyn5150 Yes, I'm aware of that. My comment was intended to correct an error of chronology in the first paragraph of the description box.

  • my favorite Replacements track!

  • this version owns! the other one has violins and horns and is compressed to shit

  • Live version released on "When the shit hits the fans"

  • anybody know where i can get an mp3 of this song?

  • Was this version ever officially released? Does it appear on any physical release?

  • the best way to download this mp3 from youtube is to google mp3iiiiify.

  • I'm addicted to this song

  • does anyone know if Alex Chilton played guitar on this version? the other version? or both?

  • @TheShannon76 not this version, this is all bob stinson!

  • @TheShannon76 Bob Stinson played guitar on this version, I believe.

  • @TheShannon76 Your mom played me last night.

  • What a great band they were ! I had the good luck of opening up some great show's for them with Scruffy The Cat .This version while not as polished as the one they released is what they really sounded like . Bob was an amazing guitar player , He went on stage at the Channel ( Legendary Boston Nightclub) wearing nothing but his les paul and nearly started a riot ! Bands today don't compare!

  • never heard this version before. i love the more produced final version from "PTMM," but this sucker is great as well. love the horns. love the guitar in the demo. huh, i guess i just love the 'Mats.thanks for everything Paul. Happy 50th.

  • I don't have a problem with the horns in the final cut of this, but I like the grittier guitar sound and he shouldn't've messed with the lyrics... they just sound like they're having more fun

  • @joestrummer2007 label made em change the lyrics. didnt want two songs about suicide on pleased to meet me (the other suicide song is "the ledge")

  • Instrumentally I like this alot better than the final version. I was never crazy about the horns.

  • As far as i'm concerned, they ceased to be the replacements when bob got kicked out.

  • @lakeviewviking

    amen

  • Heard the Justin Townes Earle cover of this. This is my first Replacements song. I'm a little bit proud.

  • Click on my channel, to heart the final version!

  • GREAT!!!!!!!))))))))))))) Bam!

  • @Pixies771

As KristyB5 says below, there is a best of album (double disc) for the Replacements that has this version on it. It's called the "Tim" version. Apparently this how the band liked the song. The producers got them to go into the studio and do it different, including with the horn section, as the song is recorded on Pleased to Meet Me and as it is generally known.

    The rest is hysteria.

  • this feels more like a live version or how a it would sound live with different lyrics.

  • Nice to hear this. The final version has the punch over this one, but it's really cool to hear.

So putting horns in the final version almost seems...natural.

    So good.

  • They need to fix the information. Tim was released in 1985, and Pleased to Meet Me was released in 1987. Let It Be was the album released in 1984.

  • I like the version we all know better. Well, after it was rescued somehow miraculously from the Mississippi...

  • Best version of any song EVER.

  • This is tremomdous! I'm a huge Replacements fan from back when they released "Hootenany" and "Sorry Ma I Forgot to Take Out the Trash" -- actually saw 'em here locally, and Peter Buck (yes, of REM) joined 'em on stage for a couple of tunes. Great stuff! Thanks!

  • not this version.

  • Thanks, good find.

  • Where did you got this version from? This is Awesome. I have the Tim Remastered Album and yet this version is a bit different.

  • I think this version is on the All for Nothing, Nothng for All 2 CD set. It's kind of a "Best Of" starting from the Tim album going forward.

  • Isn't this dubbed as the "Tim Version" on that double disc? I thought so. It was stolen from my car.

  • better than aerosmith.fuck yeah.

  • OHHHH, I *LOVE* this version!!

  • The info part is incorrect. Tim was released in 1985, and Pleased to Meet Me was released in 1987. This version dates from the 1985 Tim sessions.

  • way cooler for sure

  • hey where can i get this one???

  • all for nothing/ nothing for all

  • I whole heartily agree with you. This song just feels so much grittier than the PTMM version was stoked to find it on their outtake All for nothing album

  • Many thanks for posting. Yes, I remember a tape I had with this song on it from a live show only to hear it later on PTMM with different lyrics. And those horrible flash horns! I completely agree with you assessment. Thanks again.
