@Wimzig i know its been a month, but asking a question, I had a two year old chin, at the top of his cage was cardboard, to separate the two cages, which have been this way even now (3 years later), he chewed on the cardboard for at least a month on and off little nibble's at a time. Eventually, he got more or less "compacted" and eventually died, it was horrible, so we took the cardboard out and eventually got a new chin =). but idk if it was exactly the cardboard, or something else? thoughts?

@Emmeration You need to take them out at least 2 hours a day. They are not for children and are very delicate and sensitive animals. Do NOT!!! feed them any fruits or veggies and don't let them chew on any plastics. Its better to only give them their hay and pellets and maybe a cherio once a week. :)

I say that you should get one from a breeder, they know about all the health problems and genitics and you never know what kind of illnesses run in petstore bloodlines. But if it is impossiable for you to get to a breeder I say buy from Pet Smart, they are one of the best suppliers and only sell males which are friendlier than the females. :)

It looks like he is trying to give himself a dust bath... if you watch videos on dust baths for chinchillas they do the same thing in the dust bath. and chinchillas chew on things because their teeth grow really fast so they chew to file them down. do some research it will tell you. =]

And he doesn't even say anything specific about his chinchilla chewing on things. Do you always have to throw in the unnecessary two cents? My brother had a chinchilla named "Ralf". I called him Ralphie. He had this nifty hutch with a complete wire front panel. *My* cat (like 5x Ralf's size) would sit in front of the cage and stare at him. Ralf would stare right back. After a few minutes, he'd make a short squeak! and lunge forward an inch or two. Scared my cat half to death every time.

He died a year ago and I miss the little guy. He was so CUTE when he would get dust baths...

It's perfectly safe for it to chew card board so long as it's new, has little ink, is relitively clean, and isn't and has not been wet, because it can get bacteria on it.
