Because of two cycles, (fz) and (ahlpbew), Sweet Clyde and Bubblegum Tate ended up in their own bodies. According to the theorem, with only one cycle they would be swapped. I'm wondering if even number of cycles was done on purpose by Ken Keeler.
I'm a bit confused, I vaguely remember products of permutations where they need to be done from right to left, but your result of (ap)(ab)(pl)(aw)(fz)(ew)(hl)=(fz)(ahlpbew) is found by going left to right. Or have I forgot everything I learned last year?
@justinaandrews Some mathematician write it right-to-left, some write it left-to-right. I myself write it right-to-left as you have been taught, but decided left-to-right would look more natural to non-mathematicians.
@Neros3443 Yes. They only swapped once, and only with each other. They make a a separate two person chain of their own so they can take the part of the additional two people you need to sort the others back to where they should be, and in doing so Fry and Zoidberg are also returned to normal.

The most simple way would be to use professors oneway timemachine (that he invented 3 episodes before this) to go around the time and then destroy to machine in the next universe before anyone used it.
@HORRIOR Except as we learn in BSG, let a complex system repeat itself enough times and random changes may happen. Chaos Theory n all that. Uncertainty too. Theres no guarantee going through the time machine to another big bang would result in an identical universe.
If I've understood the problem correctly, I can see it being done in 7 moves. I think there may be a smaller number of moves possible, but I'm not sure.
@Error081688 Me too, except the sending me a message part. I would have just sent a message to my own brain. Fortunately more sensible people casually mentioned it to me first. Still pleased with the quick turnaround on this one.
@DevilsClaw In the first novel he is even killed, in his first encounter with the T-rex, and comes back from the dead in the second novel! Mathematicians are real badasses.
Hehe! Now I know why Futurama is my favorite show on Fox and loved by my parents too. I had no idea it used Math in that way. Literal use of FUNdamentals or whatever the term was for fun in education. Regardless, this is very fascinating.

Why are Fry and Zoidberg the special ones in the equation that can help everyone else back to normal? Is it because they switch bodies only once?

Don't see how to do it in less than 9:
1 Fry X Hermes = Fry is Amy, Hermes is Zoidberg
2 Fry X Amy = Fry is WashBkt, Amy is Amy
3 Fry X WashBkt = Fry is Emperor, WashBkt is WashBkt
4 Fry X Emperor = Fry is Bender, Emperor is Emperor
5 Fry X Bender = Fry is Professor, Bender is Bender
6 Fry X Professor = Fry is Leela, Professor is Professor
7 Zoidberg X Leela = Zoidberg is Hermes, Leela is Fry
8 Fry X Leela = Fry is Fry, Leela is Leela
9 Zoidberg X Hermes = Zoidberg is Zoidberg, Hermes is Hermes
