my horse was a pure english show horse for about 10 years I am re-teaching him to barrel race and i think neck reining would be kinda helpful. I was wondering how the heck do i even start to teach him to neck rein or move his butt over when i put my leg on him. he will bend to my leg but he won't swing his butt like i think a barrel horse should. Also he is a 16 year old gelding that is VERY sensative and if to many people try to saddle him he flips out, like really bad.(i say his Arab shows)
@boskox It doesn't matter which bit you use. I have a dressage horse and i am riding him western for over 3 weeks now. Neck reining was very easy to learn. All there is to it is to make your horse move away from pressure. It has been three weeks since i started to neck rein, last monday i had removed the bit and yesterday ik only had a rope around his neck. I really can reccommend it to everyone. This feeling cannot compare with riding with a bridle!
can you show a video on how you teach them to back up? I use a sea saw method lightly... when my horse moved i use my legs and get lighter in hand... she can do that great... but I would like to see how you do it.
My horse doesnt know how to neck rein because he is an english horse and I ride him western. So I am riding two handed in the show on saturday because he just doesnt know how.

oh yeah what bit are you using? curb or snaffle? can you teach a horse to neck rein in a snaffle or should it be a curb?
also when pepsi stopped when you still wanted him to circle, were you legging him and bumping the reins? or just legging?
