It's not a race in Le Mans. It was in 1998 in the "Petite Lemans Series" at Road Atlanta. One year later Mercedes tried to fly three times during Le Mans 24h (2x Webber, 1x Dumbreck). It was the end of the Mercedes Engagement in Le Mans.
@PaveLow1000 He was drafting the other vehicle so he wasn't getting enough downforce so the vehicle lifted off. Happened very often back in the early days of racing before they realized the importance of downforce.
*Snotty Voice* 6.7 out of 10. The takeoff was quite excellent, and I respect his enthusiasm and ambition with the well executed backflip, but the landing was ANYTHING but precise...
Similar crash happened to the Ti22 car at a Canadian round of the 1970 CanAm race at Le Circuit in Mt. Tremblant. Coming over a rise the Ti22 did exactly the same: the car flipped over because the air got underneath the new aerodynamic design and over it went. Driver Jackie Oliver also escaped the crash unharmed.
This is coz the car was already off the ground because of the little bump and + the high acceleration, the front wheels couldnt keep up and it did a overpowered wheelie
the cause was the car in front removing all air from passing over the front splitter, stopping all downforce at the front and underneath the car. This combined with the angle of the hill meant that the force of the rear wing was enough to make the front of the car lift up, and as seen with catamaran (formula 1 powerboat) crashes it is a cummulative unstoppable effect. Once it gets past a certain point there is absolutely nothing you can do about it
Now that's bad aerodynamics! I am assuming the car in front was part of the cause. It could be that the particular aerodynamics of the car left a bad trail of turbulence to make that happen. That's my 2 cents...
@ReverandCiderMan I hadn't thought about the hill. You are so right. I watched it again and noticed the suspension compressing as they hit the rise. As the suspension rebounds it's just a continuous motion leading right into the nose lifting.
@piuthemagicman No, the wing was not producing enough downforce. The aerodynamic body, because of the lack of downforce now acts like a wing, forcing the car up.
chumgund ya aussi le fait que la voiture a la roue motrice arrière et elle est légère de 875 kg (surtout si le moteur est a l'arriere, l'avant peut se lever plus facilement) alors voilà le résultat
It WAS Le Mans guys. The Petit Le Mans. I live in Atlanta and went it it this year. Rained out and got called at about the 2/3 mark. That crash was on the local news last year. Lorenzo just assumed it was the Le Mans at Circuit de la Sarthe.
I think because he was in the slipstream, he wouldn't have as much downforce as he would need in the position he was because of the vacuum behind the front car. Add that to the speed and angle of the hill.
He was just driving too close behind the car in front.
My mistake thats a Porsche 911 GT2 car not the Mercedes CLK-GTR but the same thing happen to Mercedes at Le Mans in 99 to Mark Webber, actually it happen twice the car went over a small hill and flipped upside down and went airborne. This race is Road Atlanta not Le Mans - Again sorry for my previous comment
If removal of some air, thus decreasing downforce and then going over a small top can not only decrease grip but produce lift, then I wonder how much front downforce these cars actually produce in clean air!?!
You should think its not enormous forces!?
Maybe its also the danger of relying of too much of the downforce, to be created by a small gap to the ground!
The car in front takes some air, and at the top the rideheight increaces...and then you have an aeroplane!
Well this isnt LeMans, its road atlanta. . .and the problem was that coming over the crest the nose of the car went up becasue he had no downforce upfront from following the other car. No the first time it happens there at road atlanta

I'd imagine when he came over the brow of the hill, and left the turbulence of the car infront, it instantly caused the massive lift.
As you can see, its perfectly timed at when the car crosses the brow of the hill :)
