  • Dude, you are mind blowingly good at guitar. I mean....shiiiiiiit. Thanks for the picking tips. Question though do you have any specific exercises for your left hand? I cant remember that last time I saw a a fret hand so fast, economical and smooth!

  • @liammb I never practice anything. I just learn songs or write songs. I would suggest challenging yourself with a solo you can't play at all. Set the bar high and you will learn more quickly, and your left hand technique will get better.

  • @jonnybarvo So you never practiced exercises (scales, chromatic etc..) and just did songs ? In the video you did some shed licks etc ... it comes from learning songs ? :)

    Thanks for the video!

  • @Scarshockable i usually just make stuff up. improvise solos and sometimes it happens to sound good. i don't know any scales

  • @jonnybarvo I see, thanks for the answer !

Sorry but I have one more question : for tremolo picking, I find it difficult to move the wrist without moving the arm, you have some tips?

    Thanks in advance

  • how long did it take you to get the tight right hand down. ive been playing for 5years now and trying to get into more lead stuff. I was just wondering because it feels like im progressing slower then i want to. Also, do u hold ur pick angled or just flat

  • @flapjacksOwnz I don't know. maybe after 5 or 6 years of playing. I hold my pick angled.

  • yea this iss how i do it

  • nice playing dude love the 7 string aswell

  • the secret to speed picking is to feel the beat

  • holy crap!!!!!! dude this worked for me!!! Not just more speed but less mistakes by far. Thanks for the tip man!!!

  • sweet ax brah!

  • It's Synyster Gates, 15 years ago!

  • you have way too much delay !!!!

  • Jeff Loomis signiture :D

  • The lights out to save on the electric bill technique.

  • Sorry, I had watched too many shred vids and didn't mean to pick on you. I took my post down.

  • The secret to speed picking. Pick they way that works for YOU.

  • Comment removed

  • @surfstomp this is a lesson about how to speed pick. nothing more

  • 7 strings !? :P

  • jeff loomis guitare´?

  • damn this helped, and question this is probably dumb but i'll ask anyways.. what are good "things" to speed pick, as in what can i practice speed picking with because when i play for example a scale and speed pick I'm not sure exactly if i should play 1 note on do a pattern 2 times..

  • @34210marco I like to speed pick using chromatic scales. But I only use them for practise they don't really sound to good when improvising well unless you use them the right way but I still don't like the sound too much XD

  • you mentioned that your wrist is parallel to the strings, but is your pick angled? Or is that parallel as well.

  • Nice vid. Why do you think I lean t'wards a heavier pick. Cant help it...lol

  • Interesting, I'll have to try this. Thank you.

  • im a relative beginner and every time i see people shred like you or when i try to learn a song thats fast but not that fast (eg. fade to black solo) i feel like...... man when am i ever gonna be able to play fast like that and i was just wondering if you guys had that same feeling when you first started out and if you have any suggestions to get faster. it would help me alot to know that people this good were in my same situation at one point

  • @minimonkeyman58 (4 weeks late, I know) But everyone starts out being slow at first. You get used to playing fast if you just keep practicing. Don't worry too much and just keep working on your techniques. You'll get better.

  • @Splintervention thanks..... i practice every day so.... some day i hope ill get better haha

  • AWESOME!!! How long have you been playing?

  • @Izraador he said 5 1/2 years

  • great job man!! now would you be able to play the same thing at that speed but without any distorsion, delay or any effect? just the pure clean amp sound?? i'd like to hear that cause that's more or less what i'm looking for!

  • @MarvinLively - TROLL

  • Yo man I got pretty far on guitar and my sweeps are getting cleaner I got some vids too I'm hoping to get as good as you one day tho your crazy sick, I have a question man what's the right way to stroke when your speed alternate picking and switching strings cause that's something I been struggling with It always comes out messy when I'm speed picking switch strings and go back to the same one you know what I mean I think it's the way I'm doing my down and up stroke

  • Strange how you only talk about your right hand technique after improving your speed. It felt to me like my left hand was slowing me down, but once I got my picking right that feeling disappeared! I guess it all lies in the picking xD

Nice video! Thanks a lot :)

  • clicker officer xD

  • amazing. this is the speed I need to achieve - I have been playing for about 10 years, and am doing just fine with my left hand and legato. The majority of my ten years of playing I was using HORRIBLE right hand technique, and have just recently (past year or so) decided to reform my crippling technique and level-up (lol) my alternate picking. This helps, and i've been torn between index-thumb heavy picking versus all wrist picking- etc etc etc. GREAT PLAYING.

  • @aaaaasssss22

lol dude your comment is basically the same for me. I too have been playing a while, since 1995 and although I im pretty good i have also been extremely limited as a result of very bad picking technique. I always pick with my thumb/index and have had a very hard time with gaining control of the pick with the above fingers tucked in/wrist technique. I feel like i have no real fulcrum point and have a hard time transitioning from string to string.

  • I thank you kind sir. I've been playing for about 4 years. I have yet to try this, but this is probably my problem. There are times where i can alt pick like a boss, and times where i can't and i wonder what happened. Whats probably happening is that im changing positions without noticing. So thank you very much.

  • (forgot to ask a few other things)

What string gauge do you recommend ?

Where exactly is your fulcrum point ? - is it the centre of the palm, more to the thumb side, or more to the pinky side ? - and where exactly is it on the bridge (centre, left or right corner) ?

  • @merseyguy1974 string gauge is a matter preference but is largely determined by tuning of your guitar, and scale length. I tune a full step down, with a 26.5 in scale length guitar and use .10 - .52 for 6 strings, and then a .65 for a 7 string guitar on the low string. check out this video for Paul gilbert picking technique. He also goes into detail about holding the pick watch?v=CpJNUGHxC3M

  • @merseyguy1974 Bro why don't you just ask him how he sleeps or tie his shoes Your questions are to deep It matters yes but play how you feel comfortable . Lots of awesome shredders hold their pick different if you have noticed.

  • Thanks for sharing dude - I've adopted this method too and its working great so far.

Can you please provide specific links to Gilbert and James videos where they actually discuss this in detail etc (if possible). I have'nt been able to find any videos, and it would be good if I could see Gilbert and James discussing this more in depth.

  • i'm triyng right now, its hard to use to but i think that its better your way, greetings

  • i pick like alexi/petrucci/govan u get use to it, not ALWAYS ancord though u can Change up to your way /gilberts way also if u feel more comfortable when u shred..

    nice ending bro...

  • You're right, this isn't right for everybody....After all, Guthrie can play ANYTHING, but Paul Gilbert certainly makes your new method work fine! I think the one advantage to the Petrucci/Govan "anchor-point" is that it can help with "pick-guaging" (NOT "digging into" the strings too much...using the very tip-of-the-pick AND keeping the pick close to the strings are both CRITICAL to accuracy AND speed! However, your (and Gilbert's) technique is efficient AND conducive to a relaxed piking-hand!

  • ive always picked like that and thought i was picking wrong

  • ive always picked like that and thought i was picking wrong

  • The technique change can feel very awkward at first, but I have seen a vast improvement in my own .playing .a relatively short period of time. The key is just sticking with it until it becomes natural. Well worth the effort it takes. Thanks for the tip!

  • oh fuck what is the song in the beginning? sounds so familiar to something its at the tip of my tongue. i hate when this happens :(

  • @shimeonmorpheus 7 tongues of god, by nevermore

  • Thats how ive been doing it. Never even thought of how u used to.

  • you play 7 strings guitar lol

  • i anchored my pinky. i wanna try this way but switching styles is tough

  • I've always picked like that, i didn't even do it on purpose, it's my natural way of doing it xD

  • It doesn't look like you're having to do much string muting with your right hand. Extraneous noise has been a problem with me unless I extend my picking hand to mute the unused strings. Could you comment on this?

  • wow, this really helped. I used to always pick with my unused fingers always poking out but when wrapped towards the palm it helps alot with control which then unveils speed that had been held back by bad control and unnecessary tension.

Now i just wish I could find something like this to help me with sweep picking. Now thats a bitch right there. :(

  • hey dude which of your guitars do you use the most? i subbed and thanks for this video :)

  • EXCELLENT Video! I used a sloppy, horrible, and detrimental "Stiff-armed" technique for YEARS. Then, I discovered "Sarod Picking," and "Scalpel Picking," and I now use a combination of the 2, along with the wrist (for strumming chords). Pebber Brown has the best videos explaining Sarod Picking. It's a timeless technique developed in India. Sarod players to play for EXTENDED periods of time, without tiring/stress. I think this would interest you. Thumbs WAY UP for keeping fingers IN, by the way!

  • Please help! I've tried tons of picking exercises and methods for over the past year! I've played as slow as I can possibly stand (8th notes at 40 bpm) to over my fastest (16th notes at 140) and I just haven't made an improvement at all! I'm trying watch myself for problems so I can fix them, but there aren't any real noticeable ones.

  • i normally anchor my pinky, ring and middle finger wen i play but i don't use my forearm or my index finger or thumb.its easier 2 just keep ur anchored fingers relaxed and just use your wrist 2 pick fast.

  • wow this video was made in 2009 can't imagine how fast you are now!

  • I always had the opposite opinion of anchoring your hand for enhanced control and depth perception, while isolating the stroke to just your index and thumb with minimal wrist movement. It works to great effect for economy passages.

I've always been taught that so much forearm in your stroke is bad technique. Subjective, i know, but it made sense to me in the long run.

The "tuck" method just feels like, to me, that you end up sacrificing too much control over speed.

  • @Shadowofcreation I agree. That's why this is a video on increasing speed. It works for me in that sense, but I have to change it up for slower passages or things that don't require strict alternate picking.

  • @jonnybarvo But still, great chops =]

  • @Shadowofcreation Anchoring works for some people no doubt...the problem with it is that its harder to shed the excess tension it creates.Economy of motion+Relaxation is the key.Try tremolopick a single note as fast as you can and check out how your body feels. You must be able to pick at your full speed while..yawing at the same time..if you clench your teeth tense your muscles...etc you are not relaxed. And the floating hand approach aids more than anchoring to the relaxation.

  • very good lesson!!! I teach my students the same way! Kudo's to you bro

  • Is it impossible to pick fast without using a pick? Because I really not used to using em' :P

  • @Vinc3ntPh4m

Haha dude I'm the same, I've been playing for like 6 years now, without a pick... I used to hate playing with a pick, but at some point, the sound is just to unclear and muffled without a pick (if you're playing distorted and fast stuff).. that's why I'm watching all these vids now.. (btw I'm not a guitarist in a band, just a drummer writing some riffs he can't play himself :P)

  • @strappinggermanlad Yeah, it's annoying because I just got picking fast with my nail down and now I'm thinking I need to switch to a pick!

  • LOL I been picking like that for years and it hasn't helped me but then I'm too lazy to practise enough anyway.

  • I can't express how happy I am to see this! You know why? I pick exactly like that! And I was thinking it's a bad habit, and I decided to change it to Alexi Laiho style, but his style is difficult for me.. anyway, thanks! I will pick like i do originally...Gotta keep my style... Nice to hear Paul Gilbert picks like that.. :D :D :D

  • nice schecter. its a schecter right?

  • ^^ my same technique on my right hand :) ... i thought that i'm the only 1 xD ...good work bro :)

  • i gotta a few questions alrite so when u tuck ur fingers n r ur fingers gonna like touch the strings?

n wat if the method u showed us didnt really help me?

n when u r picking very fast like u r n the video, r u using anything from ur arm or its jst all wrist ur using n nothing at all with the arm

  • @dc08bfmv If it didnt really help you then what do you expect him to do? ==

  • Andy James anchors his finger on the body as well! his ring finger! the only great guitarist who do not anchors his fingers on the body is Paul Gilbert as you said right!

BUT: btw i dont anchor my fingers like you do it now, too!

  • very nice man...so this was 2 years ago....how's the playing now....have you increased your speed an accuracy more? Let us know...saw this and for a dude playing in your room...you've got some major shredage going on :)

  • I've been trying so hard doing many different ways of alternate picking and have been so far largely unsuccessful. I really like videos like these here, thanks for posting your opinion,

I reckon I need a teacher to help me with my picking (i had one for a few lessons and it improved me DRAMATICALLY)

I seem to be making good progress with sweeps, taps and legato

anyway, thanks for your video and your shredding is AWESOME!

  • i already came to these conclusions on my own but it's nice to know that someone is putting it out there for people who have not

  • This is because momentum of the hand is decreased by pulling fingers in :)

  • wow, this really works, it also cured my hand cramping problem

  • lol dude, you know what?, I have the same guitar and i have switch to this technique too 1 month ago...it work Better for me too :)nice video!

  • Can anyone please give me tips on how to improve my left hand? when i use my finger other fingers that i dont use move further away so by the time i use them they are too far away.. and ive been practicing for days my left hand's speed didnt increase at all i notice my finger are doing some extra movements that they shouldnt do.. but my right hand is fine it can do alternate picking.. the only problem is my left hand.. :( Thanks for the video solved my right hand problem..

  • I used the same pick!!

    Jim dunlop USA heavy....

Nice to hold and fast alternate picking!!

  • Well thanx man, I'll try it out and I'll let you know tomorrow if this method helped me or not.

  • @MetalSk8Shred i have no clue what scales, if any, i was playing. to answer your other question, i don't hold it too tight. just enough so that it doesn't fall out of my hand. theres no need to squeeze unnecessarily hard

  • @jonnybarvo oh okay then. Alright thanks so much for the help, this helps me ALOT by the way!

  • @abrookes1985 to not be considered a pussy

  • Some great advice man!, love the reference to andy james!, hes a great guy, he went to my college and came back to do a clinic for us, but yeah awesome shredding!

  • I tried it today and it works!!

  • I tried it and feels very clumsy. I think Kirk Hammet plays with "open hand" and EVH too. At least they play in some videos where they play fast. It´s good if it worked for you. You play very fast. i just try to practise being relaxed when training and that grip feels like it gives me more tension on muscles. Well, of course it´s also because I haven´t used to that grip. Nice lesson!

  • very cool! thanks for the tips! how to hold a pick and the body mechanics is one area that even the best teachers do not spend much time on. Thanks for sharing and happy shredding!

  • I play with my fingers on the bottom of the string. did this and it felt a hell of a lot better. Thanks man trying to better myself :D

  • Took your advice and it has helped calm my hand down a lot. I used to play with those 3 fingers open and used to be limited in guitars cause of he volume knobs being toooo close to the high E string. I hold the pick differently tho because I tend to get a freakin SHOCK type vibration if I hold it between my thumb/forefinger *Shocks hits the top left corner of my forefinger nail" if I play hard or hit a chord hard. So its turned inward a bit and between the flesh of forefinger and thumb.

  • I´ve always picked like that, but my fretboard hand isn´t fast enough.

  • Jeff Loomis Guitar = EPIC WIN!!!!

  • we use the same picks....but not because it's my best choice but because it's the only good pick available near my place.... somebody told me that jazz3's are excellent too... anyway...i have an idea..and i wanna ask you 'bout it...whenever i am doing a rundown of scales..for example,,,from locrian to ionian,, i use inside picking so the amount of space where my pick moves is more isolated and very little...what do u think?...im practicing it slowly by now....

  • @tabotabojayar It all depends on what feels more natural to you. I tend to use a lot of economy picking, not because I think it's more efficient but because my picking hand just seems to do what it wants. And I'm not going to force myself to alternate pick something if it doesn't feel natural to do so.

  • @jonnybarvo thanks for the good reply!...keep on shredding man!

  • what about michael angelo batio?? lmao

  • haha i went through exactly the same story with the palm thing.. it does help a lot eventually. makes your hand more relaxed and light

  • @metalheadblues Try this exercise:

Mute all the strings with your left hand, beginning with a down stroke play your low E string. Using strict alternate picking pick each string. Down up down up down up down up down up down up.

Practice with a metronome and with your wrist resting on the bridge. You should be good to go in a few weeks!

  • just curious how do you get picking precision?

with anchoring you get a finger to stabilize you wrists over the strings to get more precision but with the technique your talking about it seems a little difficult for me to move up and down the fret board..but you lesson was helpful

    thanks

  • @metalheadblues you just practice using repetition. took me a bit too.

  • @diesect33

yeah from my last comment till now i have improved

its great being able to switch from my old anchoring technique to this and rotate between when its convenient

i hope in the future in can develop some sorta hybrid combining the two techniques(if that's possible)and become a really efficient picker since i can't just use one on a permant basis

  • @metalheadblues yeah i revert to anchoring for some licks now but, when i was working on it i used only that method. you definitely will be able to hybridize it and a lot of players do. i mostly anchor during legatto runs now and switch when alternate picking and palm muting etc.:)

  • @diesect33 yepp your right i do mostly the same thing

when i get my 7 string id have to put this technique into overdrive

    cheers man!!

  • The last minute of your video makes for a fairly strong argument...

  • im going to try this right now., cuz i play like you say you use to, and i dont feel like im fast enough

  • alright... are your fingers on your picking hand touching the strings when you play???

  • So did u had the same problem at start ? And if yes - did it just took u maybe few days hard practice at slow tempo to fix that or ? thank you .

  • Hey dude ! First of all - awesome shredding :D I'm playing electric guitar really really hard about like 9 months , going pretty well and .. anyway .. im encouring my pinky finger to the body and angeling my arm exactly as u showed that u played before . I'm really thinking since few weeks if i should change my technique and dont use an encour anymore . The problem is that when i try to not use encour the movement seems kinda unnatural and huge part of my arm is moving together with the wrist ..

  • i can vouch for what you taught here. been trying to copy the style of petrucci with the anchor but when i didn't anchor, i progressed faster and faster.

i came to the decision that what is more impt is im able to play what i want to play and with comfort

  • This is how i've always picked :) Self taught.

  • how mch tme did it took for you to achieve shredding speed and for what was your daily practice routine for alternate picking , iam really frustrated with picking speed actually my both hands lose control when I increase tempo can please advice me something to achieve shredding speed

  • Thanks for the tips bro. You helped me out greatly.

  • i LOVE that jeff Loomis guitar!

  • I used to anchor my pinky, and my teacher told me to stop it so istoped it and my picking was much better, still not perfect though

  • 12 ppl cant play guitar

  • @pabliko81 12 people play with feeling

  • im having some problems getting used to picking like this... do u anchor ur pinky on the body or not?

  • dude i am EXACTLY in the same place..hvin doubts as to go ALEXI way or GILBERT'S....ur viv did help, though tell me it must've taken a bit to get used to it?

i mean i straightaway cnt..m hvin to work on it a bit.also the pick m confused wid dunlop regular or the 3mm one??

  • You can really fuck up your wrists, when you anchor your palm like that.

  • @Esbenmad im trying to find the best way to shred but what uv said woried me big time u seem like u know what ur on about so bk to the hard way or easy oh fuck it!

  • I stumbled across this technique a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised by how much it helped with speed. There are some minor issues with accuracy which I'm sure can be cured with more practice but I'm really struggling to dampen the strings when my fingers are tucked in (my 3 redundant fingers reach the strings before my palm does). If I may, I'd like to ask if you (or anybody) can suggest anything which might help. Thanks.

  • isnt it always essential to practise at home with a metronome when trying to increase speed to the fullest extent

  • Can you play guitar without a pick? because I've been using my thumb for over a year now.

  • MSN xD

    1:37

  • Great stuff mate, really helps- although I find that my problem is not much the position as the ability to move my wrist that quickly, for some reason I can't. Oh well, practice practice...

  • Saw this vid last night, and tried the technique out today. I was unexpectedly amazed. I'm a beginner, and alternate picking has been a hurdle for me. This technique literally took my focus off my picking hand, and introduced the rhythm into it. I didn't even realize it till I realized it. I was able to play exercises at a faster tempo because of it. A breakthrough for me. Thanks for the vid. Well done.

  • So how do you keep open strings from ringing out?

  • i dont use a pick i play with my index finger nail using a pick was a crutch to me you can do everything you can with a pick and but it feels more natural and i can strum faster then using a pick you have to make sure you dont have brittle nails you can use nail hardener it looks like clear nail polish it really works try it sometime

  • I find it so weird that i actually did this myself a few weeks before i saw this video lol. I naturally played whith my 3rd 4th and 5th fingers just hanging there but i just recently tucked them in and find it easier to pick faster and jump strings with ease

  • How many hours do you play every day and how many years?

  • How exactly do you hold the pick?

  • @SpaceEater1000 i press the pick with my thumb against the side of my index finger

  • @jonnybarvo Same way I hold it, also do you hold your's at an angle too? I find that helps when playing.

  • @jonnybarvo Well, yes obviously but is the pick higher up or lower between your fingers and how far are the digit bones from each other?

  • @jonnybarvo Dude I've been playing for 16 years but lazily. I couldn't get very fast without really trying to squeeze it out. It should be relaxed & easy to do. Any way after your tips. I am playing the eurotomania string skip solo with ease at 140 bpm. I'M ALMOST THERE. That song has given me trouble for years. Now I am more relaxed and it come's more natural to pick fast . Thanx for the tips.

  • well, good lesson. You have to choose whatevers best for you. MAB anchors his pinky.

  • are you moving your forearm at all when you are changing strings or sweeping?

  • @s1uff1sc001 Yes. Definitely for the sweep picking. I would actually recommend not moving your wrist at all during sweep picking. Just lock it and move your arm. You can control it alot better that way.

  • i use my fingers to ancor onto the guitar. but im gonna try ur way

  • better grab my guitar and learn how to pick again... does this apply for sweeping too?

  • hey bro hows the loomis guitar? ive never played a arch top and i want one whats the difference in a arch and a regular?

  • @slipknotandmh There's really no difference other than the look. Flat tops are usually a bit more contoured to your body. Arch tops sacrifice comfort a little but tHey look cool!

  • @slipknotandmh price aswell flat topsare less expensive then arched

  • I pick the exactly same way as you do, and I believe this is best for me too, since gives me more precision and reduces excessive movements. Also, my picking technique improved ten times when I discovered the holy grail of picking, which some people call circular picking, since your pick makes round movements, specially when changing strings. I've already realized that paul gilbert uses this. But I have to say that picking is a very personal matter. It depends on many factors. Sorry for english

  • many factores contribute to the way a player will grab and hold his pick, like the size of his hand and fingers, his muscle configurations (not everyone is equal when it comes to body proportions), the size of your arms, and many other things. Thats why some players move just their thumb and index fingers, while others move theirs wrists and the whole hand. Malmsteen is a great picker and he doesnt move his entire right hand. Have you seen the way Marty Friedman picks? weird, but works to him.

  • Never thought too much about pulling in my fingers. I'll give that a shot and see what happens

  • I clicked on this video hoping that was the technique you would show haha. Thats exactly how I speed pick. I figured it out randomly one day. Good job teaching it

  • i found out that exercizing the index and thumb, u can pick insanly fast , this technique works for me. you can get your finger hand fast buy taking a line sheet of paper and drawing circles through the lines as fast as you can.

  • awesome man! I knew it had to be the paul gilbert technique because i've spent years picking with tip of thumb and tip of index and i havent gotten any faster. I've gotta try this now for sure lol.

  • This is such a coinsidence, just yesterday, I changed my style from the first you used, to the last one. Seriously.....

  • intro?

  • dude you're sick! thanks a lot!

  • The only problem with this friend is that if you were to play thrash metal, or at least more thrashy songs, it'll be improper technique and you'll fuck your wrist up. I agree though, it does increase speed, I figured it out myself awhile ago.

  • hey jonny, wut happened to ur blond elvis hair and ur muskelz? And how come u don't say "wdoa momma" anymore?

  • Really nice video...I understand how this "technique" is working for you...

But it isn't working for me since i'm alternate picking with my pinky on the bridge..

    Cheers..!
