  • why compare them? I love Yngwie Malmsteen just as much as Michael Romeo! UP THE SHREDDERS!!! hail from norway!

  • ace

  • Michael Romeo is an extraordinary maestro. And this comes from an Yngwie fan...

  • decent solo

  • yngwie who ??? Michael F***ing Romeo, thats who

  • @Bjorn89Gevers Nope, Chuck Testa.

  • New favorite guitarist.

  • Wow

  • this shit is sic...I can shred..but this is crazy

  • wish this had video too :S

  • This guy is scary. He is like a mix of the most amazing shreders and the eeriest classical composers all in the same body.

  • @cortarelva He surely weights that much! lol, joking, he's one of my favs!

    \

  • @cortarelva That explain why he is so fat ..

  • Freebird!!

  • all musicians Symphony X are the best ...

  • nice

  • better songs will always beat better guitar playing, so who does michael romeo owe his exceptional composing to? no one! because no ones ever written such epic masterpieces before. c'mon can you honestly name any other song that sounds even slightly like symphony x . i was really hoping they could be the ones to elevate a higher form, like metal coming from rock, but with M.R. saying they're just a metal band, i just may have to do it myself (some day).

  • C.C Deveile is 10 times better than this.

  • @TheManicAddict HA HA HA HA CC Deville...at least spell the man's name right. He couldn't hold a candle to this guy

  • @TheManicAddict jajajajajajajaja,,,,,,, jajajajajajajajajajaj

  • both are great guitar player but i like yngwie style better!

  • Romeo movements is typical guitarplayer american.. (sound "mechanical")..Yng sound most furious.. but i love this guys!!!.. two amazing guitar players! Long live neoclassical Shrederss! :-P

  • easy

  • LOL, i actually meant the guys who dislike the vid !

    & yeah i play most of romeo's solos :)

  • 7 haters who cant play "Sea of Lies" tapin solo ! LOL

  • @GuitarN3wBie hmm, can you play it??

  • @givemeajackson if he could he wouldn't have said it..

  • @GuitarN3wBie

i love romeo but hell, i can't play sea of lies tapping solo...lol

  • romeo isnt better player than yngwie and stop that shit who is better , every guitarist is awsome in own way !!!!!

  • I gotta say I like this sound better...the ibanez/jackson style humbucker metal shred better than the fender yngwie sound

  • i love how the crowd swells with his peaks

  • @dreamtheaterisbeast They do have overall, different styles, and are TWO completely different, but overall, as players, in my opinion, John > Michael, but i love them both very much.

  • what the cool technics by michael romeo..superb sound quality.

  • stop screwing around sayin who's better .....Yngwie is Romeo's Idol since he's a kid

-_-' .... Yngwie kicked the Front Door wide open back in the days , and thanks to his influence , we've got awesome guitar players like Michael rocking the stages all around the world today ! I doubt Michael would consider himself "better" than yngwie anyway , since he's been a huge fan since ever ....

  • malllllllllmessssssteeeeeeeeeen n°1

  • Sweet jesus. That was so much more than shredding

  • SOUNDS MORE LIKE EGYPT THAN THE EDGE OF FOREVER...

  • i dont know why it doesnt blow me away .: (

  • the man is simply awesome, like some kind of uber cyborg sent back in time to play guitar and warp music histroy forever. he is an machine of a player, such tone taste skill technique phrasing and overall astonishing musicallity can't wait to him him in a month!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Live from the Edge of Forever was such an amazing double album. So many incredible live solos, vocals note-for-note perfect, the band sounds 2x better live.

  • Stop comparing MUSICIANS...just enjoy it retards

  • @NobIeSavage Stop comparing intellect, jerk!

  • @Culturealimprovement - .....good one

  • @NobIeSavage smartest comment on a guitarist ever

  • he seems to be influence by eddie van halen too

  • @enkulator69 Who isn't?

  • His phrasing is godlike.

  • Who knows what is the patent of the guitar of romeo in that picture?

  • @666MrPupett666 If you meant what guitar he is playing, it's his signature Caparison =)

  • @666MrPupett666 he's got his own signature one, the brand is Caparison from japan

  • AUDIENCE CAME AT 0:49

  • fucking retards lol yngwie is a fucking awesome guitar player. michael romeo is better, yes, but anyone saying yngwie sucks is fucking stupid and nobody should take their opinions seriously. he plays with an amazing picking technique and his vibrato is absolutely perfect. not to mention he was shredding waaaayyyy before anyone else even knew what the fuck shred was. if it wasnt for yngwie michael romeo would probably have a very different style. that said, michael romeo is my favorite guitarist.

  • @blndsk4 Actually yngwie was and inspirational figure to Romeo, and I agree Romeo is way better, and by far my favorite guitarist.

  • @blndsk4 AGREED !!!!!

  • @blndsk4 Absolutely agree bro.

  • @blndsk4 well said

  • @blndsk4 agree totally.....when I think of a shredder Yngwie first comes to mind...Romeo is fantastic....I do love Buckethead's playing...anyway Yngwie is a guitar god

  • @blndsk4 Good Comment brother! Your another open minded player/person, and I am amazed to find another person on youtube with half a brain to be open minded enough to consider for a min that all these guys are fucking pro's and would put all of us combined to shame in the blink of an eye. Your right Yngwie is fuckin awsome too, as is Michael Romeo, as he is another force to be reconed with. Guitar areas of youtube are crazy with all the so and so is better or sucks comments sickening. CHeers, IC

  • @blndsk4

I agree, I guess the difference is yngwie sticks to his same old scale and licks all the time and once you've heard three of his solos you've heard them all and Romeo goes out of his way to be creative and different in every solo he writes,he's got waaaaaay more colour to his playing

  • @blndsk4 John Petrucci > Michael Romeo

  • @Dimerah not a big dream theater fan. they just dont do anything for me. and john petrucci's phrasing is very bland. listen to romeos phrasing, the way he bends, the dips with the trem, the tasty blues runs, his vibrato....romeo is miles ahead of petrucci when it comes to writing solos.

  • @blndsk4

This is only true from say 1995 onwards, but the albums before that had some very passionate, melodic and at times emotive solos. Since 1995 onwards though his solos and output in general has been medicore and mindless, and I am a huge Yngwie fan with just about everything he has done!

  • @Dimerah You're not suppose to say that, just think (even though I agree)

  • @TFIFH roflmao, I can say what i like. AND Think =D

  • @blndsk4 agreed, i love yngwie, he started the full revolution, but romeo is now 10 light years ahead, romeo the God! :D yngwie the king

  • @blndsk4 Agreed, mostly. Though I wouldn't say that Romeo is "better" than Malmsteen.....they are different. You can argue who's faster, or does "harder" licks, but that's probably a pointless exercise. It is true to say though that Yngwie took guitar playing to a whole different level, and that's why guys like Vai, Satriani, Romeo, and others revere him so much. They've not afraid to admit it either, mostly. ;)

  • @blndsk4

Without Ritchie Blackmore and Uli Jon Roth, Yngwie wouldn't be the same guitarist he is today. You can just keep going with that arguement.

  • @blndsk4 I have to disagree... Yngwie's picking is MUCH better than Mike's, but Mike's legato is unbeatable.

  • @cruelzeppelin666 yeah, yngwie's picking is much better, i never said mike's was better lol

  • @blndsk4 My mistake, lol

  • Kick. ass. solo.

  • I see some kids arguing who is better in ass licking.

"I can lick Romeo ass better then you, Romeo is better then Yngwie!"

or "Yngwie rulz, Romeo out of league, Yngwie's ass so sweet"

Go and learn to play guitar in same league you school faggots.

  • WHAT SONG? or was this a random solo?

  • @tubaeli93 This is taken from the Live Album "Live on the Edge of Forever", from 2001. Absolutely amazing!!

  • Michael is the most underrated guitar player. He's a sacred monster of guitar!

  • everything played on the albums is whqt u get live note for note everything and no solo is the same in any micheal romoe song

  • such a great fucking tone. What is he using? like reverb and chorus? or just reverb?

holy shit that sounded so sick

  • Comment removed

  • Again, I say, beautiful. Masterful pacing, and tasteful structure; I like how he builds up to the faster parts and makes the whole thing seem written in advance as opposed to off the cuff. He also knows when to quit and leaves the crowd wanting more as opposed to going on forever. As someone who used to love Yngwie back in the early 80s, I can say this with authority; his haters are spot on when they say Yngwie repeats himself over and over without any sense or taste. You go, Michael!

  • Dude do you have an mp3 of this?

  • @flockemokke hey if you want an mp3 for a youtube video just go to google and look up "any video converter" its a completely free program that can turn a youtube video in mp3 or any other kind of video into video or audio

  • PG and Romeo are my favourite shredders

  • romeo is like the god of tapping and arpeggios

  • symphony x is one of the greatest bands in the world .....the fkng ROCKS......!!!!

  • 1:55 you can hear his gilbert influence

  • Why is this one voted down? Paul GIlbert used this lick ALOT in the early nineties :) Anyone who doesent believe it, search for "Paul Gilbert Anahiem(Misspelled) Clinic". The lick is in there, this was recorded 1987 - you go, SirJamesthelll :D

  • the best guitar of the progressive metal, master¡¡¡¡¡

  • @prickenoveriTB the band is Symphony X

  • He's a good player for what he does, but definitely not the most interesting to listen to. I agree with you.

  • @wolffrankenstein yeah it goes good with their music but as far as a solo act its kinda boring

  • what band? ;)

  • Symphony X

  • What strings he use??

  • Dean markley on his Caparison Dellinger MJR guitar

  • @johnpeluco one of the best guitars ever made :)

  • The crowd knows when to shut up and listen and when to go apeshit. KILLER solo from a true guitar hero.

  • What really makes romeo great is that he's an amazing songwriter/producer as well. Not many out there with a set of skills like his.

  • Romeooooooooooooooo u are master!!!!

  • Romeo is king of phrasing/speed/melody! No contest, hands down Michael is the king of shred

  • do you know who Jason Becker is? o_O

  • @apickard5 I DO. he kicks ass.

  • Cant be king when you cant play anymore

  • You serious? Dude Symphony X is already writing a new album! Shows how much you follow them

  • @Geetman

i was talking about jason becker. comment was aimed at apickard

  • joe cant play that lick at 1:38... but the part that come before that really sounds like joe, i was waiting for the fast part to be sure that that wasnt joe...

and also some string skiping licks that comes after that...

  • Super nice solo!!!...

  • fucking epic

  • its from the track on the breath of poseidon

  • Does he use the spanish phrygian for this?

  • LOL Yngwie and Romeo aren't even in the same league!

Romeo has monster technique and god like phrasing to boot....

Yngwie is a one trick pony...he rarely composes. He simply shreds/wanks up and down through the same scales over and over. You only have to listen to a couple Yngwie songs and you've heard everything he can do, it gets boring very quickly

Romeo keeps his music interesting, with a variety of techniques and fantastic phrasing

  • Funny (to me) fact- the song that made me really like Yngwie in my formative years as a guitarist wasn't even written by him. Ain't that a bitch? That's why I'm in the Petrucci/Romeo/Gilmore/Loomis camp(s).

  • @sonitusdeus I'm not looking to start an arguement here or anything but can you really say Yngwie rarely composes after composing for an entire orchestra as well as lead over that? I just find it funny that it is NEVER mentioned XD

  • @onewingedangelhli

I have the "Concerto Suite live with the New Japan Philharmonic" DVD; it's great, don't misunderstand me I do like Yngwie, and he was at one time a huge influence on me, however, his (album) solos are, as he admits unrehearsed/improvised. Unfortunately because of that his solos have a tendency to sound the same, using his same tired techniques and scales. That's not to say he "sucks", he has great technique, just wish he would apply himself more.

  • yeah agree, i think yngwie would be best complimenting a really cool band

  • @sonitusdeus exactly.. well said my friend.. there is maybe 2 to 5 players that compare with the romeo master... andy james, shawn lane, guthrie govan, paul gilberto and jeff loomis.. these are my gods

  • @sonitusdeus

you can only listen to a diminished e arpeggio so many times...

  • @sonitusdeus plus, Romeo has great melody to his work

  • @sonitusdeus you mean yngwie's solos are boring, yngwie songs are AMAZING and EPIC, even after 15+ albums everyone can be repetative, ps - romes is way repetative too!!!

in my opinion if there wasn't mr.yngwie there would not have been mr. romeo, t.ziras, a.laiho, gus g and 1000 of other guitarists...

so hat's of to yngwie and romeo from me :D

    stay metal

  • @kanaziras haha well said mate

  • @kanaziras Truth be told, if Yngwie would not have started the whole neoclassical shred thing somebody else would have eventually come along and started it.

  • @Metawemo yep, but maybe then it would have gone all the other way, so Yngwie is nr 1. and that's the truth and fact... he did upgrade R.Blackmore though... but if you listen to yngwies Asylums, Baroque and Roll and other stuff, it's simply amazing, has quality, speed, melody... not to mention his 1st album... ok his solos are numb, but songs are amazing and extreamly hard to play with his feeling and tone , even today...as same as m.romeos too...

  • @kanaziras The argument that Yngwie invented shredding and thus no shredders would exist today is over used and overrated. Eddie Van Halen, Uli Jon Roth, Ritchie Blackmore, Al di Meola immediately spring to mind. Sure the aforementioned may not be considered shredders in the true sense of the word however, to think no guitar player would be wanking up and down scales at a fast speed without Yngwie 'pouring the foundation' is incredibly naive.

Steve Vai's musical career spans a similar time

  • @sonitusdeus Then why 99 percent of guitarists that shreds (to be precise use neoclassical, or classical licks in their songs, solos) always mention Y.J.M. as ONE of their influeces or rolemodels... he's STARTED REVOLUTION, his guitarstyle... Gus G, M.Romeo, T.Ziras, Alexi Laiho + 1000 of others never mentioned S.Vai, but did Y.J.M....

and i never said that no one other would have "invent" super fast shredding, but Yngwie did it and all credits go to him (i'm not so bit Yngwie fan tho...) :)))

  • @kanaziras Lol. Yngwie invented nothing. Learn your guitar players before you say that someone "invented" something.

  • @Shmucko12 you Mister, are obiously some mr. Psyho!!! or some philosopher, we know he did't invent shredding, God did, dddddddddddddddddd... if you se my ironi in this reply, kind Sir... everybody know's what I ment to say, but there's always some smartassguy :))) stay well dude (sry for spelling)...

  • @Shmucko12 what I ment to say is that God created world, so he invented shredding, hahaha, irony again... PS i'm atheist :))))

  • @kanaziras Yngwie just rips off Baroques and other classical peices. People were doing what he is, a really really long time ago. Maybe on a different instrument but nonetheless the same.

  • @Shmucko12 yes, that's exactly mi point! but he "invented" it, he promoted it, commercalized it, ect... he started the "revolution"... that's why he's special... as I said yngwie is not good guitarist /for today standards) but this is the fact... just look how many guitarist will betwenn others mention Y.J.M. :))) he's big part of "metal/rock" music....

  • @Shmucko12 did u really say yngwie invented nothing or i misread?

  • @catapei Yes, yes i did say that.

  • @Shmucko12 well, u said that because u dont understand about music and about guitar.

  • @catapei Ha...hahahahhahahahha

  • @sonitusdeus hahaha. Petrucci destroys them both. xD

  • @KornSOAD

nah, too linear. With that said, I've seen DT 4 times. While I do think Petrucci is a great guitar player, I'd still take Romeo's phrasing over Petrucci's. Love Fatal Tragedy, and Under a Glass Moon!

  • @sonitusdeus

Well, they both use the same 'boring' scales. Harmonic minor mostly? The bad and ugly phrygian-dominant-sound... Michael is more into tapping. But I guess he's influenced by Yngwie. So don't compare both... They are both great and Steve Vai is also great and Shawn Lane and Guthrie Govan and they all play their own stuff. But it's okay. If someone just focuses on one guy, he'll never get far.

  • @sonitusdeus Romeo is more rhythmic than melodic. But all shredding are just just shapes played fast. For phrasing I would not recommend any guitarist, but rather very good saxophone players or keyboard/pianist players. For the record there is a fair bit of Yngwie in Romeo.

  • @Blitzbok or jazz/jazz fusion players, their phrasing is great

  • @tommorellorules Another excellent example!

  • @sonitusdeus What makes you think your opinion has any worth....you should watch some Michael interviews and hear what he says about yngwie.

  • @AtanasovPeter His opinion has 82 thumbs up. Obviously people agree.

  • @MrCameronBarton Ok so Michael Romeo must be a total fool for being a fan of Ygnwie and you know better.

  • @MrCameronBarton And since when 82 ignorant, unread fans have a clue about playing?

  • @AtanasovPeter We are clearly NOT saying that Yngwie is bad or something, we just say, that he is not that creative. He always uses his good ol' techniques and licks, which are absolutely awesome, but they are getting old. Romeo always invents something new, and he always has and always will have a new trick up in his sleeve. Enough said, I totally agree with Sonitusdeus, what he said is perfectly reflecting the truth

  • @bkemeny92 Romeo is just stealing licks from Allan Holdsworth and Shawn Lane...clearly Yngwie doesn't want to do that.

  • @sonitusdeus romeo hasnt been around for 25 years and/or has 16 plus albums

  • There are many Yngwie licks in this solo... Yngwie is one of Romeo's favorite guitarists... Maybe you should listen to an Yngwie live in 85' solo..

  • @sonitusdeus you nailed it on the head bro yngwie is all show but romeo is in an other spectrum all together.....

    voice-one

  • @sonitusdeus I agree, but I think when yngwie gives a shit he can lay down some unearthly shit....They are very much equals in ability....trust me;)

  • @44SuperShredder I've heard a lot of ygnwie and five minutes of Romeo and you are wrong.

  • But erm.... I hope all of Yngwie's fans won't angry to me coz u can compare the albums, both of them..

  • i agree with you XPRESTISSIMOX coz Michael Romeo got his own skill & identity, not like Yngwie, always recycles his own material..

  • this is a powerful solo

  • this solo is from the live album "Live on the Edge of Forever" ;-)

    symphony x 4ver ^___^

  • he sucks. period!

  • Romeo truly fantastic. Altough I've always thought Malmsteen is the greater guitarist, among all of the shred-heads that exists for that matter.. All because his original (and also one of the first guitarists I personally started to listen to as a kid), his deepness, tone, skill (and at least before: accuracy).

  • Although Malmsteen is truely a great guitarist, he is nowhere near as accurate as Romeo managed to become.

  • Not now anymore no. Then again Malmsteen is reaching his 50's, doesn't practise all that much. (At his best he was of course THE best).

  • When he was at his best, that is in the 80's, he was pretty much the best technical player out there. But he has never played as well as Romeo does today, from a technical point of view.

  • Like, since that ain't a fact, don't state it as one. If you think so then no ones gonna stop you mate, opinions give us all a voice.

  • Yes it is a fact. Whether Michael or Yngwie is better would be an opinion, but anyone who knows a bit about guitar knows that Romeo has surpassed Malmsteen in every technical aspect.

  • You're a complete idiot. First, for saying Malmsteen is super accurate which is not true. Second for mixing up opinion and fact, which a 10 years old kid wouldn't do. Third, for insulting me without any reason, you're clearly raged. And last, for saying I don't know much about guitars, this one made me laugh. Get good.

  • I'm majoring in Physics. I think I know better than you what are facts. Man, you don't have to keep sucking Malmsteen's dick because you're swedish.

Also, I never said Romeo was better, I only said he had a better set of techniques, better executed. Y

  • You can argue with that, but I doubt you will find good examples to prove the opposite.

  • This man knows what he's talking about. He has said pretty much everything I would have. Romeo has passed up Yngwie Malmsteen. If you've ever dedicated a lot of time to learn both of them which you evidentally have not, Romeo makes Yngwie's guitar phrases seem 2-dimensional. The only thing up for debate are their compositional skills. But even then I'd say Michael Romeo has developed and gone beyond Yngiwe because Yngwie is a washed up old man. Watch his Youtube videos.

  • PS: Romeo is more creative. Malmsteen has put out endless albums, but he recycles his own material. He gets exception as opposed to anyone else though because he was a pioneer. But still a Uli Roth ripoff after all >_>

  • let's see what Romeo will be doing when he's at the age Yngwie is now. he will probrably "recycle" some stuff too, like you said. i like them both, and they're completely different. compare player's like these is fuckin' bullshit, since they both are excellent on their own. the fact Yngwie is cited everywhere testifies he is one of the most influential guitar players, so let's talk about Romeo here and let Yngwie do his stuff.

  • wow

    amazing

    just fricking amazing

i want them to tour again so i can see thme!

  • fucking great and emotional :) Michael is the best

  • One of the best Melodic Solos I've ever heard ^_^. I don't care what they say. This guy smokes Malmsteen.

  • of course he smokes malmsteen

malmsteen helped pioneer the shred movement, people like gilbert and romeo perfected it =]
