  • the left hand is so you can protect the body, just look at Floyd you can't hit him anywhere...

  • coach rick:

i practise the pull alot, but it happends often where i wake up the next day and my lower back is hurting. any suggestions? i recently started pulling back on the inside of the jab, instead of straight back, and i take a small step back with my back foot, it helps a bit.

  • tell that to floyd mayeather blaqumarket83, thats part of his defense using his shoulder instead of his glove.

  • Floyddd :)

  • Lmao

  • Seems dangerous...but looks effective ima try it

  • i like how people are claiming its bad to keep the left hand down. it seems that some of the people giving coach rick advice have never put on a pair of boxing gloves in their lives, lol.

  • @Meelodin I was thinking the same thing. These cats probably never even laced up a pair and got in there. Being in there live vs watching from outside is two different things. I can do way more out the shell and shots roll smoother.

This is a style..not the gospel folks. Somebody that has mastered a "style" is way more dangerous than a person following the mass of majority method/thinking out of a book and has not mastered anything other than keeping up their left hand. LOL

  • Coach Rick if i was a pro boxer i would have you as my trainner, good mitt work.

  • HA HA shes so tiny, just pick her up and throw her

  • @TENNSUMITSUMA haha b4 u do dat she would hv kicked ur ass.knw nothng abt boxing idiot

  • @vvibha3

what i know is that im 6'6" 312lbs and know 5 martial arts (check my facebook if you dont believe me), ....yeah id be raping the eggs out of this bitch before she got one of her midget jabs off

  • Rick, what if I am a southpaw? I do boxing too man but after 1 week and then I had a fight and I am lousy on my first fight but now things are improving slowly.

  • Idiots don't realize that this is the most defensive way of boxing. Your left shoulder blocks punches more effectively then your left hand.

  • I'm a southpaw...should I do it at the opposite or what?

  • not gunna lie...she looks crisp...good job rick...where are you located?

  • The person you are watching in this video is an experienced fighter. You should learn and master your fundamentals first. With your arms in those positions you can defend against everything thats thrown at you and you have lots of countering options. Providing your footwork and head movement is sound there is no reason most people could not use this defence. I would recomment being somewhat nimble though but not overly.

  • Keeping the hand down is bad for those who do not have the athletic skill to pull it off. Its not for everyone, but its a valid skill to learn. jabs come from underneath the eyesight and you can draw your opponent in.

  • I love shoulder roll style, I'm learning it with a passion. I don't like Mayweather though but the guy is a genius.

  • 2 questions, do you deliver to apo ae adresses and do you have an military discount on your dvd's

  • i like how u stay professional against those who havent adapted to new "working" boxing techniques. continue to be humble and let the haters do their job. i love ur vids and will buy some. i have trouble finding trainers because most are "ole school", meaning they are on the traditional teaching. Ive studied the shoulder roll and have been using it for some years and have been VERY successful with it. i wish that i could find a trainer who knows this in my area. hopefully one day u can train me

  • Rick, keeping the left hand down is a bad skill to teach a fighter. A fighter should always be in position to fight back. The best defense is to not be there for the punch... If her opponent was to loop the left-hook to the shoulder or step in strong with a straight right the fight will surely be over.

  • @blaquemark83 Thanks for your comment, but thats a subjective statement, some of the Best fighters in the world and in history have fought with the left hand down. Its a skill that I teach to those who have the ability to learn it, she does and continues to win bouts because of this style of boxing. The Great Sugar Ray Robinson and the Great Archie Moore used the low left hand Pull roll bend technique as well as James Toney and of Course Floyd Mayweather Jr., I teach it and it works,, Thanks

  • @NextTime4U does it still work with a southpaw? i notice floyd and toney make some adjustments when fighting a southpaw.

  • check out the vid mayweather demonstrating techniques he could not be hit fighting from the pocket! coach rick is a genius.

hey coach could post a vid of mayweather rope defense also know as rope a dope.

  • @NextTime4U Aki, you may want to remember a fighter many dont remember. ONE OF THE GREATEST OF "PHILLY SHELL" FIGHTERS, GEORGE BENTON. OTHERS INCLUDE JERSEY JOE WALCOTT, EZZARD CHARLES.

  • @NextTime4U IS THIS SEGMENT IN ANY OF YOUR DVDS?

  • @NextTime4U Coach Rick, would this style work for stand up in MMA? Or would it be wiser to have guards up at all times in MMA? Thanks

  • @NextTime4U dude, i will buy ur vids if they break it down and apply to sparring.. i need to see the connection of these exercises to real application...cmon, get back at me...

  • @NextTime4U forget all these bitches on youtube, keep doing your good work. clearly they can not read a title of a video explaining what the video entails. Using a specific boxer's technique. Just remember all the people that give pathetic responses are modern day rocky balboa's in their mind.

  • @NextTime4U

I have a question bout the low left hand.

I can see the defensive benefit of keeping it low to help protect the body as long as you can protect the chin by rolling. But is there an offensive benefit to the hand position such as having it in a better position to counter with a hook or jab?

    Thank you

  • or maybe to grab your opponent? It seems like a counter from this hand position wouldn't have much power behind it, but obviously the style can be effective so what is the benefit?

  • @NextTime4U You forgot the prime example Roy jones Jr.

  • @NextTime4U I sir have a drifiting hand also and use this it makes your opponent misjudge the distance between you an him because the fact your lead hand isnt as visible and at BLAQUEMARK83 if your chin is down as it should be and tucked into your lead shoulder you have nothing to worry about also moving your head helps if your playing rock and sockem with your opponent this wont work but if you move and use head movement and angles it does good video NextTime4U

  • @blaquemark83

what coach is teaching is called trigonmetrics whereby three triangles are formed making it almost improbable to land a clean, but more importantly is that straight lead right is gonna be a bullet because of the positioning of the body commonly called the Dempsey drop shot, yes jack Dempsey used this style as well also used by freddie roach. research before you say, and stay safe

  • @blaquemark83 i don't think its so bad as long as the boxer knows how to do both. it really confuses your opponent when you switch from standerd to shoulder roll. when you fight elite boxers sometimes you need to bait them in to throw a good combonation.

  • @blaquemark83 have you ever watched a boxing match?

  • @blaquemark83 You're left hand is down but your shoulder is perfectly able to prevent punches from landing if you are adept at this style. The words "always" and "never" should be used sparingly in sports since everyone has a different body and a different style they are more inclined towards using. there is not "right" way to do things.

  • @blaquemark83 To continue on what Next time said; some fighters who consistently kept their lead hands at chest height or lower - Ray Robinson, Charlie Burley, Bob Foster, Pernel Whitaker, Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Roberto Duran, Joe Frazier, Floyd Mayweather, James Toney, Tommy Hearns, Muhammed Ali, Joe Louis, Jose Napoles, Vitali Klitschko, Ken Norton

It's a pity nobody taught those guys how to box properly, a couple might have really amounted to something. :)

  • @blaquemark83 from what i'm seeing on video...the left hand is down to protect the tummy area - that's the concept of "shell" defense; you can't protect everything but you can sacrifice portions of your body to protect the rest (e.g. the shoulder roll).

  • great matt work rick that technical works for me

  • What i never get is what if someone shoots a right hand 2 the top of the head hows ur shoulder gonna stop that??

  • teach floyds marathon run technique please!! thx

  • Isn't keeping the left hand down a wrong practice? Or is this evolution?

  • ..necessary?

  • Hey Rick, is all of the stuff in this video incorporated into the mittwork in the "Advanced Technical Mittwork" DVD? Or is some of it separate from that?

Also, although some of the stuff in this video: watch?v=2y5jB0uZOrM at 2:17 to 2:22 is similar to the stuff in this vid, it seems more specific in that it focuses soley on the shoulder catch and blocking the left hook to the head. Do you have any videos that show you training lie this or is just so simple/shot that a whole video woudn't be..

  • in amatuer boxing the simple gaurd is the best all you have to do is protect the face you can take loads of punches if your hands are tight it dousnt score and because they cant get through your guard they will get frustrated and make mistakes Capitalize

  • is 16 a good age to start boxing??

  • @TheInventorL yeah. why not. i started when i was like 18. But i have no intention of going pro. Boxing or any martial art is difficult if u want to make a career from it. there are many sooooooooooo many you can do if you educate urself. Finish shcool and uni. Boxing as a hobby and u can alwyas fight as amateur while u study.

  • SO MANY PEOPLE LOVE WHAT FLOYD DOSE IT'S REALLY AMAZING AS A WHOLE WE REALLY KNOW WHO RUNE THIS SHIT!!!!!

  • the title is self explanatory, Unique Mayweather Style. Floyd was taught this since he was a baby, it really works for him, alot of people try to learn it, but all they are learning is the pattern, not the style. trust me i know i live in Vegas, i go to floyds gym, and i know all the Mayweathers, Big floyd, roger and jeff. all teach it different but Big floyd created it.

  • Good teacher. Nice pace, clear instructions, and very informative. Much props. I wish my trainers were a little more detailed like this.

  • First off, thanks for your great videos.

Second, as you base this on Mayweather's style and it is alleged that Mayweather has problems with southpaws can you demonstrate to us a successful adaptation of the shell defense to a southpaw?

Floyd's catch-roll-block is brilliant against a 1-2-3 combination from a conventional fighter but of course with a southpaw it's all different angles.

    Keep up the good work!

  • SWEET!

Man I wana learn how to do this! You guys do seminars?

  • SWEET!

  • aint the right hand pose to be covering her whole cheek????

  • why would he teach her to keep her hand down? she has no business keeping her hands down. false confidence. any fighter would capitalize on that and make her pay.

  • @phatblackgurl619 Ahh, LOL,, Thanks,

  • @NextTime4U Im just sayin. When Roger does it, or RJJ, or Tommy Hearns did it , the were long and fast. She doesnt seem to have earned the right to fight in that style. Now, maybe I am wrong, it wouldnt be the first time. Just seems to me, thats she has bad habits and its ok to reteach. Thanks for response. Good videos. Thanks for posting them.

I just know from expirience that when she gets tired her hand will fall. This way they have no where to fall and it will leave her face open, unprotected

  • @phatblackgurl619 I always appreciate educated comments like yours,, the women in the video is a 3 Time Regional and State Golden Gloves Champ and I have trained dozens of other fighters from around the country and world with this system and it works,, I don't tell a fighter to always keep there left hand down, but being edpt at rolling the shoulder like a Floyd mayweather or James Tony makes for a much more complete fighter

  • @BnBBoxingFitness Thanks! I wish her luck and I appreciate good dialouge and debate. You are doing a great job. Talk to you soon.

  • @NextTime4U good work!!!!

  • @phatblackgurl619 that's just one style of defense. it's not to be used all the time but it's best for counter punching. floyd uses that style. and it work for him most of the time. or actually almost all the time it works for him. just asking, do you box?

  • Comment removed

  • @phatblackgurl619 I guess you don't understand Floyds defense. He puts his arm down as part of his defense. The thing is you can't really argue about this cause Floyd is the hardest mofo to hit.

  • Comment removed

  • @phatblackgurl619 In boxing, there are different guard position one can utilize (shell/classic guard etc., this is the shell). She is being taught to defend herself using her shoulders. Additionally, cross guards, slips and other evasive techniques can be effective out of this posture. There is no false confidence. It's a different style and technique. Use the technique suitable to you and your specific strengths. If you have slow reflexes, I'd encourage keeping both hands up (traditional guard)

  • @sweatbox123 the problem here is he isnt even throwing the croos for her head and her shoulder would only block her chin, shed still be getting hit in the face, its not a technique to teach a beginner or anyone whose not naturally fast.Only some people can get away with it

  • @billysue2 Billy, you're right this is not a beginner technique. For the purpose of demonstrating, it's not crucial for him to step in tight and throw his right cross. At range this is how the punch would miss or glance your shoulder. He is actually throwing at her face. However she's combining the shoulder roll with a slight lean to make the angle that much difficult to get hit. Yes, these are videos for advanced fighters. The woman in this video is clearly not a beginner/ slow.

  • @phatblackgurl619 What are you watching??? Can you post the time in which her hands are down? Keep in mind this is a pro style defense. I have over 20+ years of boxing experience and half of that was in vegas and my opinion is that coach Rick got her straight.

  • @phatblackgurl619 thats what they want you to think... this style is based off of counterpunching

  • @phatblackgurl619 unless she's baiting yur ass in....lol

  • @nevawrong Not this year,,

  • i am a amature and since i watched this abowt three month ago and started bringin the sholder roll into it and none of my sparrin partners can not connect im just like floyd now lol but u r a big help couch rick keep em cumin G!!!

  • I notice there is know specifed shipping method on your orders atleast when ordered from "Coach Rick the Mittologist" website. How long should one expect to have to weight after ordering to recieve the DVD?

  • @dustintml All orders are shipped via USPS First Class Mail, international 3 - 9 days,, Thank you for your order... Coach Rick

  • dude, show this applied in sparring. thats whats missing from all these trainers showing their skills. show how it comes together practically, would be very beneficial to everyone.

  • And also, what exactly is the "User Manual"?

  • When you say the 2 Disc "Mastering the Art of Technical Boxing Mittwork" DVD series, do you just mean the Vol. 1 Basic Technical Mittwork and the Vol. 2 Advanced Technical Mittwork? Or is it something seperate from these two DVD's. I'm a litte bit confused as to what is what it terms of you DVD's. And would you say that there are things in the Vol. 1 DVD that are important to learn before the Vol. 2 DVD? And also, what exactly is the "Special Edition" version?

  • @dustintml If you have never done this type of mittwork you would need The series which is Vol. 1 and 2 (Basic & Advanced),, the Special Edition has a number of specialized techniques used by Floyd Jr and Roger while he was training for the Marquez come back fight... Thanks,, Coach Rick

  • So if I am going to be buying the Advanced Technical Boxing DVD, is there a point in buying the Progressive one? And also, when you say the 2 disc Mittwork Training DVD series "Mastering the Art of Technical Boxing Mittwork", are you just referring to the two DVD's I talked about in the first part of this comment. (The Progressive and Advanced DVD's)

  • keep breakin it down like in this video. we need to understand the theories or purposes for each move, u are pretty damn smart for understanding the reasons why. i think its cool how you give credit to the mayweathers, keep producing winners, peace.
