I think they should have more villians like this in the sherlock holmes movies, he really just kicks their ass in the end. I would love to see one of them more like this as kinda very elegant and fighting very properly like a fencer or something than at the end just lose his s*it and fighting very brutally and beating the hell out of sherlock.
5:55 wow even the small bells rang they were unshakeable and when the BIG BELL rang it was Shakeable and Shook the whole Big Ben. I don't know what I'm going to do when I stand on the hour hand and then it chimes. I think it would not shake in real life but it is pretty loud.
@PadawanLinea I looked that up after I read your comment. Amazing to think that kind of quality could be produced in the 1986 on computer. Why can't they make movies like that nowadays?
@vjpearce Who knows. For the most part, Animation these days is great. Every now and then there are bad ones *cough, cough, Happy Feet, cough, cough*. I think in general it seems like most movies are bad these days because there are more movies coming out than ever before.
@PadawanLinea No, what I meant was using 3D to make super realistic stuff. Like the ballroom scene in Beauty and the Beast. The cogs in Big Ben in the great mouse detective, which fooled me into believe they were 2D. Or even like this /watch?v=WbEc0V3C9Y0 or maybe more stuff like this. Digitally made, but made to look 2D /watch?v=l8f4S3XMWNc
I am not going to go into details about how scared I was of 4:05-4:08, 4:12-4:16, 4:19-4:22, 4:29-4:30, 4:32-4:33, 4:34, 4:59-5:11, and 5:13-5:27, especially the panic attack I almost went into at 5:32, when I was younger. And the fact that Glen Keane, who was the animator of the Beast, was the animator of Ratigan certainly didn't help at all.
The ending to this film is definitely one of Disney's finest. From the visuals of inside the clock tower, to Ratigan going completely insane and turning into what he had denied being the entire movie, it's great.
It's always the awesomest villians that have dramatic deaths. Ie., Ratigan, fell off Big Ben to his death. Dr. Faciliar, dragged to the voo doo spirit world. Scar, devoured by hyenas. Out of all of them though, Ratigan's had the best rising action.
u know fidget should get some villain credit too. I mean he wanted to kill Oliva and Ratigan didn't and he succeeds in almost every task Ratigan gives him
Of course the rest of the clockwork animation is really spectacular, but the cel painted (not to be confused with cel shaded) gears are able to maintain consistancy of shape while the camera angles change rapidly. It's one of the many reasons this film is so great.
With all of his plans ruined and his entire organization destroyed, Ratigan flies into a rage and attacks Basil. But when it looks like Ratigan has won, Basil pulls off a trick that causes Ratigan to fall to his death.
The same thing happened to Professor Moriarty in the Sherlock Holmes stories. Holmes came up with a plan that ruined Moriarty. Moriarty attacked Holmes and almost threw him over a cliff, but Holmes did a last second judo move that sent Moriarty to his death.
This is why Ratigan is one of the greatest villains. Despite putting on a "nice guy" facade and refusing to be called a rat, when shit hits the fan that's exactly what he turns out to be--a feral animal, only out for his own interests.
@LordBenne my theory is thar basil's victories ofer ratigan drove ratigan closer and closer to the deep end overtime and i agree ratigan is one of the greats of disney villains
love how you can see the balloon sneaking up at 1:17
and how awesome would it have been to hear basil explaining what he was going to do with the balloons? "isn't it obvious dawson!? we can combine these four balloons beneath the union jack, tie the flag underneath that match box, and use the trapped air in the fifth balloon to propel us after the dirigible. ELEMENTARY!"
They should've had Basil shoot up cocaine like Holmes does in the original books... That'd be hilarious--mouse on crack!

When I think this movie, I think that epic battle between Basil and Ratigan. Just a wonderfully constructed piece of animation and awesomness.

This is from the DVD that came out last year. It has much better picture and sound quality than the old 2002 DVD.

And to think all the animation in the clock tower was done before 3D
vjpearce 3 months ago
@vjpearce Actually, all of the gears in the clock tower are done by a computer. This movies had the first use of 3d animation in an animated film.

And THAT is how a great movie ends! I really hope Disney doesn't ruin it with a crappy sequel or prequel.

You know Basil could've gotten his pistol with him so he can use it to battle Ratigan better than just getting himself killed.
