I'd like to hear this amp with some proper guitars - A Strat, a Tele and a Les Paul. I'm none the wiser after watching this vid, with all due respect.
@scottd1984 Granted, it's not as gains saturated compared to many of the modern metal amps these days, but it has plenty of gain to replicate even late 80s gain saturation...
I own this setup and use it for gigging classic rock and it is way better sounding than this video shows, the recording is awful - check out proguitarshop videos here on youtube to see how to make a demo - I'd love to see a video of Andy at PGS with the L20H. Godin is obviously a talented player but his style really doesn't highlight this amps strengths, plug in an SG or Les Paul and grind out some classic riffs and this amp will sing!
maybe as good as it would sound with humbuckers? do you have a decent distortion pedal and high output pups that would suit metal? all depends on what you want jimmi. a lot of people prefer a class AB amp and humbuckers for metal. but hey, some decent gear and sometimes you can get what you want.
@hendrix184 To be honest, I think noise would likely be the biggest issue. It is absolutely true (I would say, anyway), that single coils aren't ideal for that style, but it's surprising what playing convincingly can do. So my verdict is that theoretically, I see no reason why you couldn't give it a go. Besides, once you start using pedals and lots of gain, much of the time the sonic character of pickups is lost anyway. Set the EQ and gain right, add some pedal, and play with some attitude...
I'm sorry, this guy is obviously a good player but no feel or tone worth talking about. The good thing is , I played the 4x10 version @ GGuitars in New Haven Ct today and that amp sounds really good. I am not blown away but i will buy one because it's a good buy and unfortunately the Fender Blues Juniors don't sound as good as they used to. This guy is so amazed with himself it's just disapointing that he has nothing to offer the buy or the ear.
I think the end sounds like crap; but it's some serious mic clipping. I have a vc-30 and eventually if you drive the power amp that hard you may lose a little definition : D
I have the 5watt version and think it can. It is a classic rock amp. If you really wanted to get close you would need a JTM/JMP or JCM800 (respectively). Lionhearts are voiced different to the Marshalls but do sound great for what your are asking. Maybe look at Marshalls vintage modern series if you are wanting new stock for rock sounds. Slash is either using them or promoting them.
The mic's line volume into the recorder might be way too high in this demo - hence the muddy tone.
hello kristian ... i use one of these with a ocd v4 and it sounds amazing ... you can play guns n´ roses , ac/dc ... yes it is a classic rock amp ... max
I own the same setup as this one in the vide essentially, being the 20W head and the matching 2X12 cab. You can definitely achieve some higher gain stuff, enough for hard rock to maybe even old school metal...
As for the Gary Moore tones, it has more to do with playing like Gary Moore. But I would say go for one if you are interested...
(3) 12-ax7 in the pre stage give you plenty of grind just from the pre. if you can get the volume up then you'll get some added dirt from the power section. the recording at the 4:00ish time spot of this video doesn't do the amp justice. i've got the 1x12 combo(5w) and it's amazing when cranked. the higher gain settings on the pre really sound best with the master up to at least a moderate setting though to get rid of some of the "fizziness" you hear at lower volumes.
i wonder what you went with, but id say you would get more clarity and a much more pure tone out of the L20H simply because the amp is drivin to its optimum operating mode, quicker then the 50watt engl, but straight outta the box the engl will give you more gain, thats for sure.
I own this great combination and I am very happy about it. I do not even miss the seperate tone controls for each channel.
The LT212 with its fantastic Celestion Heritage Greenbacks match the L20H perfectly. It is really great after a little breakup time for the speakers.
But I recommend a tube change. V1: JJ ECC803S, V2: Electro Harmonix 12AX7A EH, V3: Tung Sol 12AX7A, Output: Mullard EL84 Reissue (Cryo-version). You will achieve even more warmth, depth, clarity and note definition.
3:43 too much gain for the recording.

I hope they would do another demo detailing the amps tone rather than the player's demo.. Didn't like the way it sounds.. >.>
