I'll be the first to agree that a "crime against the community" sounds really, really stupid and baseless. But, for example, prostitution is a crime for which a complaint from the "victim" is not required for prosecution. How is that? Prosecuted for a crime where the directly-affected "victim" isn't needed for prosecution? PLUS, BOTH SIDES in that crime are prosecuted. How is that?
In addition, how about embezzlement or fraud against the government? Who is the victim? The community.
Crimes against individuals = "mala in se" crimes. Crimes against society = "mala prohibita". Hitler used this guy's argument against the Jews. ie: "The Jews destroy the order." This guy is preaching pure, undiluted Hitlerism, Stalinism, Maoism. Result of prohibition = well over 170,000,000 innocent people murdered during peacetime by their own governments in the last 100 years. This irrational statist asshole should be out of a job for favoring the initiation of force against innocents.
"Innocents?" At what point did Barnes do that? I heard him say that a climate in which drug abuse is rampant causes the entire community to be dangerous to the point of uninhabitable, and therefore those who abuse drugs (and deal them) should be punished. I also heard him say that majoritarian (read: "democratic" standards could never trump everyone's individual rights as guaranteed by the United States Constitution. And you're comparing him to Hitler, Stalin, and Mao.
The analyst and politicians think they are so clever and smart. The spend most of the time talking and not effectively listening. That is why Mr. Helfeld can get them to eat their own words. Listen, Listen, Listen.

The fact still remains hard drugs like heroin and coke, meth, are not islands unto themselves and the user. These drugs take the human mind inevitably straight off a cliff where all that matters is getting more even if it involves breaking into your house and stealing anything they can get their hands on to support it. It's going to effect other people in one way or the other. You either have to pay more to the jails to house them, or police to protect the neighborhoods more. Euthanise?
Is it ok to take preemptive action against a dangerous act. Well, what if the police are off duty and your neighbor is lighting off dangerous fireworks (after you asked him not to)that spiral out of control and could possibly hit your children. Should you wait till one of them hits your children and puts them in the hospital and then take action against him or should you go over before he lights the next one off and physically stop him? The fair and reasonable thing would be to stop him first
I liked some of Jan's other interviews better. In this one it just feels like he's berating the guest for six minutes, and this is only a partial clip. If this guy kept interrupting me like this for half an hour or an hour, it would seriously piss me off. I would throw him out a window. I hope in the future jan posts videos that show the whole interview, from beginning to end, so we can see if it is legitimate for the guest to be flustered and pissed off when the youtube clip is taken.
Indeed, that's what he is: a collectivist -- and collectivism is humanity's greatest threat. I wonder if it's an evolutionary thing, this hive-mind mentality. Whatever it is, it has to be overpowered and, preferably, destroyed.
@JesseKantstopolis Mr. Barnes strikes me as one of those New England Yankee puritans out to re-establish their imploding imperium. It is up to the drug addict to break their habit and seek spiritual help from a church.
The problem with democracy and the tyranny of the majority is that any new idea, good or bad, always starts out as a minority view.
I think it is counter-productive to argue that there are No benefits to drug laws with respect to natural rights. There are benefits, but the harm they cause far outweigh such benefits. Securing a prescription is an added cost to obtaining medication. The protection against getting the wrong medication or the wrong amount of medication is not worth the cost.
Law isn't always required to enforce community standards, no matter how those standards emerged or were created. Manners are a good example, enforced by social rewards and punishments.
Why are these people so hostile when debating Jan all the time...I mean...if their ideals were sound philosophically they would have no reason to be hostile...right?
I'm growing tired of all the self righteous stupidity of people and their willingness to violate the sovereignty of even 49% of the people in the name of "Democracy"....that's why we were supposed to have a republic anyway...but everyone seems to forget the concept of minority rights...including this Barnes bozo.
People can get hostile when their core beliefs are questioned. If the basis of their claim to knowledge is faulty, or outright propagandist, they'll become hostile or even violent in order to protect themselves from the truth. You might enjoy some of user: Stefbot's videos on the topic.

This is what we're up against; elitist snobs whose ideology is identical to past tyrants. They don't understand the "slippery slope" factor.

FACT: The criminalization of *some* drugs creates FAR more problems on society than drug use itself.
