  • No, it does not fit like an old style HT lead, but there should be a spring in the coil to make a good connection between the coil and plug.

  • why my raditor is hot when go slow?but when go fast the temperature is go down?can u help me what the prroblem is?

  • If it overheats when in traffic or slow speeds, the electric cooling fan may not be working, the fan is not needed when driving faster as the air flow cools the radiator.

  • No need to disconect the battery, just remove the keys from the ignition

  • HEY IF IM CHANGING MY IGNITION COILS SHOULD I ALSO REPLACE THE COIL CONTROL MODULE? (THIS IS ON A 3.8L V-6)

  • Normally if the coil comes without the module it should be ok to replace just the coils

  • hi I have a Renault megane 1.4 16v 2003 my revs are going up to 3000 when am rolling in nutral but when I stop there at 1100 and jump to 2000 I've changed throttle body cleaned electrics what do u think problem could be thanks

  • It is a wasted spark system and only has one coil per cylinder.

The main reason for wasted spark is to simplify the ignition system, if we fire 1&4 and 2&3 together, we don’t need to know which piston is on compression stroke, only that it is at the top of its stroke, so we can get all the information from the crankshaft position sensor and don’t need a camshaft sensor.

The plug is fired on compression and exhaust (wasted spark) stroke.

Citroen 2CV used wasted spark, no rotor arm or dist cap.

  • Is this one of those spark systems where there is spark with every crank revolution? Thus spark wasted every second cycle, but two cylinders per coil? If not, why is 1 linked with 4, etc?

  • Hi, the first question would be are you losing coolant? White smoke from the exhaust when the engine is warm, would normally be a blown head gasket.

  • @AskTheMechanicCoUk After getting a tune up from an amatuer mechanic my car started shaking like that at startup. I feel it was a bad plug or bad innition coil and my car is running hot. I changed the water pump and the thermostat and it still run hot and it has a hesitation when I accelerate when the car is cold.

  • Hey I have a similar issue on this engine light stable when I turn it on and flashing when I rev my 07 Audi A4 and smoke white smoke comes out. The mad scientist plugged in the tester and came out to be cylinder 3 was misfiring. I changed oil and filter ignition coils spark plugs. Cylinder 3s coil was rusted and its spark plug was the worst of all. As if when dealer washed the engine moisture got in the spark plug. what do you think is the problem? • ECU ignition control module are normally very reliable, damage can be caused by jump leads being connected the wrong way around, water ingress and wiring loom shorting to earth.

  • I was having a lot of problems with my truck and had these symptoms; it would shut off when idling, was really shaky and would misfire and hesitate. I changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pump relay, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and both ignition coil packs all this has done no difference After messing around with the ignition components I took out the ignition control module and had it tested and well theres my problem. What could have cause this part to go bad?

  • If the engine is burning oil and there is blue smoke from the exhaust the reason is because the engine is worn, changing the sensor won’t help this. P0420 is catalytic converter not working as efficiently as it should be, this is because it can’t convert excessive oil from a worn engine into clean air.

The other reason for blue smoke can be a worn turbo charger if fitted.

  • hi i have a scenic and theres a littlie bit of blue smoke from the pip just sometime not all the time i was told the eng,, is fucked but just to put oil in it if it gets low ,, there was a code its p0420 its the lambr sensor would this have something to do with it thanks

  • If you go to my website and look at page askthemechanic.co.uk/makes/peugeot I think you will have the same engine as fitted to the 206, as you can see it has a coil pack held on with two 10mm nuts, it is easier to remove the breather pipe first by pushing in the yellow tabs and pulling it off. If it is the coil the engine will run very bad normally worse than the Renault.

  • hi guys , i have a peugeot 307 1.4i ess my engine shake too , so what i have to do

  • can you please tell me if my check engine light on lexus es300 1998 read "cylinder 2 misfire", my mechanic recomended to change the ignition coil. Should i only change coil #2, and do you have any suggestions if i try to change it myself (ex: where is cylinder #2- front back, right/left)? thx

  • Most manufactures number 1 cylinder is the cylinder furthest away from the flywheel (except Renault). On the LexusV8 for UK market, number 2 cylinder is, looking at the engine, left hand front cylinder, it would be ok on this engine to only change one coil on this engine

  • Bloody hell, i've got to buy new spark plugs and coils...this car is killing me...

  • The starter motor turns the engine, so if the belts are turning the starter motor is working. If an ignition coil is faulty the engine will shake. You didn’t tell me what the car is but Citroen/Peugeots do have starting problems when the coil pack fails, most cars will still start but run rough.

  • @AskTheMechanicCoUk can the ignition coil be faulty or something wrong with it if the car runs a big rough at idle even if the coil has spark, when i remove one wire from a coil i dont see much change in idle , thanks in advace

  • Hi, the coil could be shorting to earth when under load, if possible change the coil with another cylinder to see if the misfire moves to another cylinder, if it does check spark plug, compression etc. Check out my website askthemechanic.co.uk under misfire.

  • when i start my engine and it sometimes doesnt start, and it shakes alot if it does start. Do i need new coils? or a new starter?

  • Dont ever steam clean a renault clio with a 16v engine. my garage tried it and it didnt run properly. water got in the coil pack.

  • Why that engine have a tick noise 0:57 to 1:03 it that normal or the timing belt need to be change?

  • It does sound loud in the video I think it is just the because the car was next to the garage and it is echoing. Cam belts normally only slap against the cam cover if very worn, wouldn’t normally tick

  • great vid i need to replace one on my golf v6 but guessing six might be a pain and not really sure how to go about it! any ideas?

  • See my page on misfire askthemechanic co uk/navbar/misfire sorry YouTube wont let me display the web address in full.

I think Golf V6's have a coil pack, not six pencil coils, so should be easier.

  • thanks mate i'll do that and see how it goes. cheers

  • would a bad coil still make enough electric for spark? or will produce spark but not long and good enough?

would it be possible to test them by an ordinary spark plug tester?

    thank you

  • The coil windings dont normally fail, you can test with an ohm meter, the primary windings are about 0.5-1.5 ohms, it is normally the insulation that fails, the spark just goes to earth instead firing the spark plug. If you use a spark tester and you have a good spark on tick over, rev the engine hard to see if it disappears.

  • hi i have a similar problem with misfiring. when i remove the electrical connector of 1 and 4 the engine sound changes but when a take 2 and 3 the engine stops completely. does it mean 2 and 3 are bad and have to replace them? thanks

  • The more the engine note changes or stops the harder the cylinder is working, these are the good ones, little or no change is because the cylinder is not firing correctly, bad coil.

  • thanks for your help.

  • hi, I have a 2003 Audi A4 quattro 1.8t, and my engine shakes and rattles like that. Did you change all of the ignition coils or just one.

  • On the Renaults they work in pairs 1-4 & 2-3 so it is best to change them as a pair. The Audi's work on there own so it does not matter, but you may find that another one will fail soon, so it may be wise to change them all at the same time to make the car more reliable.

  • thanks for posting this video. i have a 2004 1.6 16v clio. what brand of ignition coils would you say are the best?

  • I like Bosch or BEAU both made in Germany

  • Its a 2004 1.416v Clio, but the same engine was used in the Megane etc.

  • is that a Magan or Lagoona?
