@london56 You can buy the ticket when you get there, but depending on the time or date (rush hour/weekend/holidays/etc.), you may not be able to get the next train, but would have to wait a while. We usually purchase the tickets in advance so we don't take the risk and have to wait for hours for the train (which happened once).

It is designed by Siemens. Siemens is multinational (in R&D as well as production). Nationalistic thinking is not something Siemens does promote, they stand for diversity. Only the first 3 or 4 train sets were made in germany. The majority of the train sets is build by chinese partners in China. To develop their own (chinese) technologies would demand to develop something that is not covered by some patent already. That would mean to bypass prooven technologies for something else.

I live in Tianjin and there is nothing convenient about this train as Beijing south station is far away from the city. If you count the extra subway/walking/taxi time you are better off taking the slow train that goes into the heart of Beijing.

The Germans had their first generation ICE train rolling through the US many many years agao when the US could have gone this way, but they chose something else (which apparently is often faulty) and didn't bother with this sort of infrastructure. And the US suffers from the NIH problem too and so rarely import high tech. That didn't bother the Chinese. They bought German ICE trains and tecnology and now make it themselves.

The seats are so cool, you can flip the backrest the other side so passengers can face each other. Traveling from nyc to boston only takes 6 to 7 hrs, and you don't have to worry about traffic.. The Acela also has electric outlets you can plug your laptop. Due to the high speed, internet connection breaks once in a while. The Acela is the best in the world!!
