  • Beautiful clip

  • Sounds very religious to me. According to a comment below, this little "preaching" even made someone cry.

Apparently, all humans [Except myself and a few] are sheep; They just cant' help, they will always buy into sentimental messages.

Well, we have at last a serious competitor for the religious bull; And this time we don't get to stone some sabbath breaker, burn a witch, or kill an infidel-kafir before taking his belongings, and his wife and daughters as sex slaves.

    Thus said, I don't complain.

  • Poetry for the modern society...

  • Another thing I find interesting....

The photo of Earth 3.7 billion miles away was taken by Voyager 1 in 1990. I was 11 years old then. I wonder what I would have been doing - playing with friends? At school? Or maybe...just maybe I was gazing into the night sky with my dad.

I'm proud to have existed when this picture was taken.

  • So profound - almost brings a tear to my eye.

  • @DIGITALSCREAMS Actually it did bring a tear to my eye.

Makes me hope mankind will better itself....Star Trek style.

  • simply beautiful !

  • Mr Sagan makes me feel proud to be a citizen of the "Pale Blue Dot"

  • Thank you, Carl Sagan, for leaving us with these inspiring words. Humanity journeys onwards in your memory, striving towards the future you imagined so vividly. You truly were humanity's ambassador to the cosmos.

  • Good Video. Thanks for info..

  • Good Video. I like this Video, Very Infomative..

  • dont know why but this video made me cry

  • Thanks for putting in the original pic at the "distant image of our tiny world"

  • And i'm getting angry, because of people failing in WoW BG's xD Haha. So stupid.

  • This is why we ask ourselves many times "Why do all Great Minds think alike" as there is only one answer to the question "Cause no one believed them when they're were wright before they're time".

  • Carl Sagan was a great man this video does bring a tear to my eye also. One day maybe our children when have no uncertainty as they will surely have clarity. I just as an optimist think we'll get our path right .

  • @drek456ful Wipe your tears Miss. We have to be happy every day and not crying like little children.

  • @Neueregel why?

  • @BjornSeverinLarsen because the planet Earth is Fuc*** amazing. This Solar system rocks!! We are lucky to be here.

  • @Neueregel then why not cry a bit at its beauty? To feel inspired and touched.

  • @BjornSeverinLarsen Crying is for pussies. Are you gonna cry if an asteroid strikes? No. We gotta man the f** up and rise to the occasion.

  • @Neueregel no it's not. Crying is a valid expression of emotions. It is only pussies who limits themselves to not look like pussies...

  • @BjornSeverinLarsen "Valid expression of emotions" Maybe but depends on each personality. According to my Epicurian/Stoic worldview I try to minimise any kind of drama (both cry and laughter) in order to pursuit a general happiness. Also, humans are the biggest crybabies in the animal kingdom, that's another disadvantage we have.

  • @Neueregel haha yeah alright. I find contendment to be seriously overrated. I would much rather be euforicly happy which on the flipside allso mean the possibility to be deeply sad. I however have a saying: "In the end of the year and you look back and if you can't remember atleast one time you cried and one time you where euforicly happy, then you (I) are not living your (my) life". However to cry cos you are touched by beauty, is not part of this and is not the same kind of crying

  • @BjornSeverinLarsen Maybe, but there are no rules for stuff like that. Each personality behaves differently in each occasion.

  • @Neueregel truely :)

  • @BjornSeverinLarsen People who don´t express their emotions loose the capability of feeling. They become like "No emotion Zombies". I prefer to be a pussie than a zombie. Greetings from a german pussie.

  • @loveandpeace71 *nods in agreement*. However - is it really pussy behavior to cry?

  • @BjornSeverinLarsen No. For a man who can cry in our society and with people like "Neueregel" means it to have real power.

  • My remark was not made towards the Carl Sagan video, sorry

  • Where did you go FFreethinker?

  • Ah great here come the water works. ;"(

  • Great video. Carl Sagan is the man. You have a fine taste for videos . Thanks !!

  • Those were some mighty spot-on words.

  • this is beautiful, there is hope for humanity to be a competitive yet compassionate and sustainable race. We have a long way to go but the spirit of possibilities and adventure lies before us if we can open our hearts and minds to challenge dogmas of any kind and learn before we judge eachother

  • soso guckt mich an bin ein elch

  • Thumbs up if you are a guy and have a man-crush on Carl Sagan!

  • @mewboy5 For me it's more like I wish he was my grandfather, that I could have learnt from him as a child, instead of being indoctrinated as a Christian.

  • Carl Sagan gives such a sobering perspective that often shuts people up.

  • hiya ich hab was unanständiges entdeckt

  • Hij zoomt in op Nederland.

  • Love it!

  • i havent cried in like 2 years, and hearing this for the billionth time always brings a tear to my eye because it just renews my hope in humanity. I miss this man

  • The driving force of economics has been disguised by politics, commercialism and ideologies; Religions get sold to believers by priests, governments get sold to citizens by politicians, and real-estate gets sold to us by banks.

None of these people have value to you if they lie, cheat and steal. Give something that means something, your effort, your honesty, and your patience, and you'll often be rewarded by something beyond what can be bought, stolen, or cheated; you'll have friends.

  • Happy birthday Carl. You are dearly missed.

  • happy birthday, carl

  • If only every being on earth thought like Carl.

  • Billions and billions of happy birthdays to you.

  • Happy birthday, Carl Sagan. This planet Earth misses you and your beautiful mind. I wish that one day, the human race or our descendants will be able to achieve your greatest hopes for us.

  • this just makes me cry.

  • Carl Sagan is a damn hero!

  • I listen to this once or twice every week so I dont lose hope in humanity

  • we miss you Carl....happy that you live your life like you did a very good one from my point of view a very good man....very happy that I can still watch and listen to your videos...thank you internet : )

  • I try to listen to this at least once a week. I also used it in my groom's speech at my wedding.

I think it is one of the most important things that I've ever read / heard.

  • Comment removed

  • what cunts disliked this

  • The best "Pale Blue Dot" video by far available imo, both for sound and visual quality, well done !. RIP Carl, for as long as there are humans on this planet, you shall never be forgotten :).

  • the best speech i´ve ever heard.

  • top 25 most played number 1 on my ITUNES

  • Religion and superstition sucks. Professor Sagan taught me more about love and respect of my fellow human beings and my home than any Asswad religious 'give me your money' preacher ever did. Life is short, you die and that is it. Live with it and try to do something good today.

  • @dagda825 You just summed up my beliefs in a brief YouTube comment. Good show. :)

  • @dagda825 Thanks for your comment! Thumb him up

  • lol at 3:03 the camera zooms in just a few kilometers away from my home in the Netherlands

  • @ps34evah lol same!! haha I live in Zuid Holland XD

  • @alex007152 Lol yeah I live in Leidschendam.

  • 134 people who do not deserve science and the wonders it has wrought.

  • ♥ .

  • Now we know where the "thumbs down dislikes" are coming from - they are coming from people similar to "bornagain001" - Ridiculous! Religious folks are never going to believe in science so I suggest that all religious folks stop going to doctors and stop vaccinating your children. And when you get really sick and your kids get sick, just pray. A suggestion to all you believers to PROVE that god exists is to STOP using the medical technology created by unbeliever scientists.

  • Possibly the most eloquent writer that I know of!

  • What I can't understand is that after trillions of years of cosmic evolution we have ended up with things like "taco bell". WTF ??!!

  • @MrBeautifulba1 are u being ignorant or just using a hyperbole. it's only been 13.7 billion years. not trillions

  • @JackyRBKwan yes I'm ignorant. Very very ignorant.

  • @MrBeautifulba1 ok you are. thanks for admitting.

  • @JackyRBKwan no problem. Glad I could be of help.

  • I miss Carl Sagan so much. He was a brilliant man, and a true hero.

  • weareorarewe?

  • God damn why does this video make me feel so emotional? I literally could cry while watching it

But it's not a sad cry

  • I wish that I could get Obama, Gaddafi (wherever he is), Cameron, Mugabe, Putin, Netenyahu, Kim Jong-Il, and all the rest together, lock them in a room, and play this to them over and over until they finally get it

  • @bornagain001 It's are home for now, but yes your right Heaven is are real home.

  • Agreed! Thank you so much for making this video! I loved it!

  • This makes me want to cry. Why are we so diseased?

  • Dr. Sagan is INCORRECT. Earth is NOT OUR HOME. Heaven is home for us who follow Christ. Earth is just a small stop before we head home for eternity. Unfortunately, Dr. Sagan did not make it to Heaven.

  • @bornagain001 And that's why Christians are persecuted. You care nothing for our finite planet and pollute it to your hearts content because you think you're entitled to it. You are a threat to the survival of our species.

It's quite fortunately that he didn't go to heaven, since nobody with a brain in their head would want to spend eternty with the likes of people like you who jerk off to the thought of people being tortured forever.

  • @Keitaro2011 ....Christians are a threat to the survival of the species? That funny coming from a HOMOSEXUAL.

  • @bornagain001 lol wut

  • @bornagain001 What do you mean homosexual?

  • @Keitaro2011 You don't make sense

  • @valvetrom What part doesn't make sense?

  • @bornagain001 unfortunately, idiots like you exist who believe in a claims of a book that nobody even knows who wrote based on such imbecile things.. think with your brain! get out of the cage of religion and open your mind to our vast cosmos and the insignificance of our mere existence.. please dont come to a scientific video again to bash on us with your religion.. man i hate christians..

  • @omglaz0rz ...but we DO know who wrote it. Many of the books are named after the authors. Matthew, Mark, Luke, John. Corinthians, Galatians and Romans were letters written BY PAUL to the churches in those areas. Song of Soloman, Ester, Ezekiel...all known authors. The C=hristians do not languish in confusion. It is the UNRIGHTEOUS that lives in DARKNESS.

  • @bornagain001 hahaha!!! moron. Your 2000 year old superstitious book for uneducated bronze age shepherds has seen its day. Christians... I implore you to read your bibles so you can become the atheists you already are. There's nothing divine about them. Nothing. Superstitious. Don't be a prat like bornagain001 here. Yahweh was a bronze age "god" of war. Shitty to the core. Kill this one! Kill that one! Stone this one to death! Stone that one to death!! Give me a break.

  • @mouthyweasel Well said !!! Vote Peyote Party in 2012

  • @bigredballoon1 The creationists... :(

  • Sagan's words are a beautiful and compelling message. Why is a comment from "Outlawzand1" that is filled with profanity listed as a "Top Comment?" This demeans what Sagan was trying to convey. Surely you can do better than that from all the comments received for this video. The English language has sufficient vocabulary to express ones concerns in elegant prose without resorting to obscenity, as is clear from from the "Great Words" of Sagan and other "Great Minds" on your YouTube channel.

  • @kempfsc We are free... you dont need to tell us how to talk, or how to express our opinions.

  • @kempfsc Your critical comment is just stupid mate. So what if I said a few curse words... 0_0 I was conveying the frustration I felt at the time, with a simple comment on YouTube. Yes that's right, YouTube. I'm not going to bloody sit around all day thinking up sentences that would be worthy in a presidential speech. So fuck you kempfsc, my comment is top-rated for a reason. BECAUSE I SPOKE THE TRUTH. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE PROFANITY, RINSE YOUR EYES OUT WITH ACiD. Thank you.
  • @Outlawzand1 I think you're missing part of my point. I don't disagree with what you say, I feel much the same way; however, have you considered the fact that many people are "turned off" by profanity. As a result, when they see it they dismiss what that person is saying regardless of the fact that he/she may be speaking important truths. As a result, they don't get the your message. You will only increase your audience by taking a little time to express yourself in more elegant prose.

  • @Outlawzand1 There are three things that tend to make me not take a post seriously:

    1) USE OF CAPITALS WHICH IS OFTEN A SIGN OF NOT HAVING THE BRAN CELLS TO FIND THE CAPS LOCK KEY.

    2) Profanity. Again, most people with working brains don't use it and those that use it don't tend to have much in the way of brains.

    3) Not being able to write coherent English.

I am far from being the only person to react in this way.

Of course telling someone to rinse their eyes out with acid doesn't help.

  • @kabivose I disagree with point 2), "Fuck" is a wonderfully emotive word and "shit" has got to be the most versatile word in the english language haha

  • @kabivose lol BRAN cells :)

  • @Bowenwww Oops! I agree, not checking what I'd written was hardly sensible. Well played sir! :-)

  • It is my uderstanding that all life occupies space and the same "energy" that created us created all things, known and unknown. The energy or frequencies we recieve we also transmit a constant stream of "?" back to the Cosmos. We do travel to infinity and back. As the revised info returns some are upgraded while others are downgraded to create a perfect balance.

  • @bigredballoon1

The religious extremists and fundamentalists of course. They don't like logic, reason, or the folly of their delusions they so cling to in a faith of hatred for anything not of them, their GOD, or ideology.. And yet they only prove the validity of Carl Sagan's premises of this point of pale white, the pale blue dot.

  • The Cosmos and I are One. I am my world. Together we seek more consciousness...

  • tl;dr version you're insignificant

  • SHUT UP and enjoy his brilliant words!

  • This is just a tiny fraction of truth. The rest is in consciousness.

  • Thats so crazy how small we are compared to just are solar system, wow.

  • @breezypaola yeah but no. the only thing thats crazy is the people who think, believe there is a god that created it all=)

  • @breezypaola and how small the solar system is compared to the milky way, and how small that is compared to our local cluster, etc.

  • How did they get that camera 3.7 billion miles away?

  • @AidanVaroloWhite7 Voyager 1

  • @AidanVaroloWhite7 Since, engineering, and lots and lots of equations.

  • @AidanVaroloWhite7 I just lost a few IQ points after reading that.

  • @scarfacethx Wow that taught me

  • @scarfacethx No need to be an asshole... some people are younger and may not know about certain things, there are no bad questions only stupid answers, like yours.

  • @scarfacethx and you didn't have many to spare!!!

  • @AidanVaroloWhite7 The camera was fixated inside the Voyager 1 spacecraft taken in 1990. The primary mission of Voyager 1 was to take pictures of our solar system, which it did for over 33 years (and still does today!). It is the first probe to leave the solar system, and is the farthest man made object from Earth.

When the probe finished taking pictures of Jupiter, Saturn, and the surrounding moons, Carl Sagan had the idea of turning it around and taking a snapshot.

  • While i like this HD "remix", it takes focus away from what he says. I must say i prefer the original video.

  • OH GOD THIS IS THE GREATEST THING EVER IM CRYING FROM THE MUSIC ITS SO FUCKING BEAUTIFUL #bye

  • The sun is too small on that solar system thing.

  • The guy who commented under me is so ignorant.... It makes me sad... I could make an argument but he wouldn't understand, it's easier to make a rock cry. I think that it's because of these intolerant, ignorant, uncomprehending people that humanity is t

    All messed up.

  • @neotizok I dont think he is so ignorant as you think, I call troll. Just another of those internet attention whores...

  • HAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAAAAAA!!! NOW SCIENTISTS CHANGED THERE STORY AND NOW SAY "WE FOUND MORE PLANETS LIEK EATRH!!!!!" LOL IDIOTS CAN"T SEE THAT GOD IS REAL SO THEY KEEP CHIANGING THERE STORY!!!!!!?!?!?!?! LOL MEAK UP YOUR MIND SMART SCEINTISTS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @sebc2s they meak up their minds when you tell them wtf meaking up their minds fucking is dumb shit

  • @azurewrath2224 LMAO WTF THAT MEAKS NO SENES U FUCKING DUMASS!!!!! WAT R U STUPID OR STUPID LIEK THE FUCKING IDIOT SCIENTISTS!!!?!?!?!?!! LMAO... NO LMFAO!!!!!

  • @sebc2s apparently i was to clever for you learn to fucking spell is what i was saying youtube has a spell check man seriously.

  • Deep thoughs by 86devilheadz. "sometimes I watch video's that have no meaning what so ever, just for the simple fact to waste time, to talk about a vision of a blue dot that I cherish from a distant part of the Galaxy that none of us will ever see unless we're getting paid millions of dollars. I say in all this vastness, I'm going save myself and settle with a different meaningless uploaded video to kill just a little more of my soul."

  • My idol.

  • The only home, we've ever known.

  • Sagan, scientist, philosopher, poet. Beautiful.

  • 128 dislikes = 128 people I feel sorry for.

  • @OnePablo Yeah, that's 128 who have so little self-worth that they desperately want some imaginary sky god to tell them that they're special.

  • @bjohnson55555 if you watched the video you'd see we are all of little self-worth. Also you don't need God to make you special, money and dominance helps too.

  • This is so emotional...an yet is telling the truth. Good job!

  • I love Carl Sagan's non-invasive and kind manner of explaining our existence. Some of our atheist friends should take some lessons from this humble man, if they are to convert the way of thinking of a theist, be it a Creationist or non-Creationist.

  • @LuiKang043 I'm an atheist and I disagree with many of the things he has said. People kill each other for many more reasons than just land and feeling of ego. If we only have one single existence and there's no one to punish you higher than a sovereign (which in this case you can control or be part of) and indeed the world and humanity is a small pixel of insignificance, then why not be selfish and take as much money and resources to enjoy your one and only existence? We're all selfish by nature.

  • @SirGeorge8600: No your a immoral sociopath and in the nuclear age more then ever before, it is better that persons with your mental illness be snuffed out or imprisoned with haste.

  • @selenadelos So you believe that most of fat cat oligarchs who run governments and corporations ought to be snuffed out in the same way? Atheism doesn't teach morals, it's a LACK of belief...there's nothing there to attach morals to. I speak realistically...if people who are resource utilitarian, individualistic, and materialistic...then I guess most of society needs to be locked in a mental hospital, much like Stalin did with his politically opposite...then he would snuff then out.

  • @SirGeorge8600 why would atheism need morals, isnt it enough to know you only get one chance, so its best not to fuck it up, and at least make it enjoyable to yourself and others?

  • @slightlyst0o0pid the word moral is nothing but a word just like the word atheist, it stands for more than what the religious people says it means. Morals is just means be a caring person be kind have fun without screwing up others lives, you get what im saying.

  • @FutureScience2012 and i would completely agree with you.

  • @selenadelos but you are right, eugenics and heavy discrimination against the mentally ill is necessary. They are of no use to society and eat shit loads of resources for doing nothing in a mental hospital. There's absolutely no rational or empirical reason as to why society ought to be burdened by them...just let them be on their own and natural selection shall take over more or less.

  • @SirGeorge8600:: Well I am not a Atheist nor a Christian more of a animist you could say, I was speaking more of sociopaths then those with simple mental illness whom are not any danger to the rest of humanity. Anyone that can not get beyond their own greed or desires and feels it their right to do as they please to meet these goals no matter whom they may whom be harmed when identified should by all rights face the wrath of humankind that also has interest in stability.

  • To be secure in person and possession is a age old interest of humankind, I do respect your opinion though I think your missing the big picture here. Yes I think all people whom seek control and power over other humans be they in government corporate or in private life, should be held to a strict moral code and killed without pity or remorse if they step out of line regardless of their positions. This is in every ones interest to be so not just in the select few, and if it was your

  • life and or freedom at stake you would feel the same be honest. No human is self sustaining and a island unto themselves, interactions and trade require a moral code of conduct to work tho it may not be written in some sad little black book it is still needed indeed.

  • When a man is getting better he understands more and more clearly the evil that is still left in him. When a man is getting worse, he understands his own badness less and less. A moderately bad man knows he is not very good: a thoroughly bad man thinks he is all right. This is common sense, really. You understand sleep when you are awake, not while you are sleeping. You can see mistakes in arithmetic when your mind is working properly: while you are making them you cannot see them.

  • You can understand the nature of drunkenness when you are sober, not when you are drunk. Good people know about both bad and evil: bad people do not know about either.

  • Comment removed

  • @SirGeorge8600 Maybe your question was a rhetoric, but I'll answer it in the case that it wasn't: Because those selfish acts that we may employ would still leave a gap within ourselves, a social vaccum as such, as the selfish life you may lead would guarantee you a life with no deep social relationships; eventually (some are quite skilled at the "art" of this deception...)

We are a social species, after all. Our intelligence is rooted in this trait we possess.

  • Well said! I miss Carl Sagan and his contributions to making the human race sane.

  • Stop arguing, assholes! we're all fucking insignificant!

  • 127 people doesn't like the earth.

  • Really sad that these wise words are proven so poignantly true by someone calling another person gay (and meaning it as an insult). Thank you, @HopesRedeemer. Way to live up to your name.

  • @untrackedvariable You're gay too.

  • that message at 30 seconds destroys it

  • HOW BEAUTIFUL! THANK YOU...

  • Carl Sagan was mistaken, the universe does not show our insignificance but rather the eternal power of God. The book of Romans in the Holy Bible says, "For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse."

  • @HopesRedeemer It depresses that you can write something like this after watching such a powerful vid. You have clearly not listened to a word he said.

Believe what you want, just don't let yourself be exploited by the church.

  • @RationalAtheism I once, like you, had a problem with the notion of God's existence and the belief that our lives are significant. However, science is showing that our previous materialistic ideas are inadequate to explain our existence. For example, see Frank Wheeler's (Professor of Physics and UTA) book, The Cosmological Anthropic Principle. Here is an excerpt from the Forward of the book, "What is man that the universe should be mindful of him?

  • @RationalAtheism Telescopes bring light from distant quasi-stellar sources that lived billions of years before life on Earth, before there even was an Earth. Creation's still warm ashes we call ‘natural radioactivity'. A thermometer and the relative abundance of the lighter elements today tell us the correlation between temperature and density in the first three minutes of the universe. Conditions still earlier and still more extreme we read out of particle physics.

  • @RationalAtheism In the perspective of these violences of matter and field, of these ranges of heat and pressure, of these reaches of space and time, is not man an unimportant bit of dust on an unimportant planet in an unimportant galaxy in an unimportant region somewhere in the vastness of space?

No! The philosopher of old was right! Meaning is important, is even central. It is not only that man is adapted to the universe. The universe is adapted to man.
