I don't know whether you are on Facebook or not but I started a topic on 'whether Hendrix was a jazz man'. I personally believe he had many jazz sensiblities in his playing and it indeed opened up much very interesting discussion. So if you go onto Facebook and click on the 'All of you who love jazz' board you can take it from there. How about a video on the fastest butterflies in the world? Take care, John.
I understand the point your making about all of the bands that just want to sound like other bands. What happend to developing your own unique sound instead of copying someone else's.
hey, i am young and i am in a band. we are all in grade nine and so far have been really fortunate and have sold a lot of shirts and tickets to our shows. we are thinking of taking the next step and rying to get signed but were worried we might not be able to keep up with school. what should we do??
You're obviously talking about the bands you hear on the radio and watch on Muchmusic, there is alot of good stuff out there, and alot of the "trendy" bands still have really good songs, it's all just a matter of opinion.
i have been a musician for quite a while and am into all styles of rock, old and new. I have considered many things such as shredding through solos, (By the way, you are very intelligent), but I feel as if all the shredding has been done in the 80's or before. People now a days who are not musicians, like simple melodic stuff which kindof sucks because this puts limits on the music i write. Thanks for sharing this video, very interesting.
music is made to match ppls moods , so if they sound like thier " whining " thats because thats how they want the song to sound . also , to tell ppl how to make music is wiered because when ur doing ur job , would u want ppl who dont know anything about ur job coming up to u and telling u how to do it ?
argh, I hit the post button too soon, I wanted to add that I'm a percussionist and I'm in a band who rocks for the sake of rocking, and I totally agree with your 1st grader painting a tree analogy! a tree painting should be recognizable as a tree, but it's the detail in the entire picture that makes it unique and interesting and even, art. too many bands selling a formula, not music!
Nerdy has always had it own "cool", examples Elvis Costello, Devo, Thomas Dolby, B-52s
I think the problem our buddy Joro is talking about here is the commercialism of a particular sound or image so that it becomes like just another competing brand and the labels that encourage bands to embrace a particular sound and/or image.
but then again, music is music, some people may like the current music being played today, not because it's "the new trend" or it's "cool to listen to it now" but because they genuinely like it. certainly there are people who are afraid to be different cuz they are afraid that people would not accept their sound....you know what i mean? with that said...
I think you would like Zeromancer. Or I guess just try looking into Industrial music. Good music won't just fall into your lap. If you want to hear something you like you have to look for it. But I agree with most of the stuff you're saying in this video.
couldnt agree more. i find your vids really worth while and hope you keep them coming. my band and i feel the same way! we want bring the music back to the music, not the image or whats "in". we are going into more of a progressive rock/metal direction, still but adding different elements as well. if any of you like it, add us. we have metal songs, rock songs, and light songs. check it out.
Emo music is terrible. Yeah, that's the whiney stuff. Or that shit they try and pass off as rock. It's all a plan by the government to make modern men more feminine. Look at metrosexuality. Grunge marked the end of anything worth rocking to, now we have to cry about our fucking girlfriends or how people don't understand us. Are they trying to get all men relate to being outcasts? We can't even have a rock song for the sake of rocking anymore.
Check their first two albums. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, & Saucerful of Secrets. Anything up to The Wall is excellent really. Dont bother with them after that.
Well..Pscheledia may not be the best alternative, but the early to mid 70's offers lots of quality pop stuff..In all genres, not just DISCO. Disco gave the 70's a bad rep. From Yes to King Crimson, Floyd, Supertramp and Steely dan, to James Taylor ,CSNY, Joni Mitchell...The list goes on. She got very jazzy and soulful. (Same with Steely Dan) I think pop music peaked in the 70's.
This should be some fodder for the nay sayers!!
Come and get me. Challenge me. Challenge your ears!!
Yea I was thinking yes. They are awesome. Floyd, zepp, etc.. all those guys.. great, great stuff. Of course, being a guitar player, I like the super wanky virtuosic stuff also. Also, classically inspired (metal-rock) can be really creative and cool.
That is the main reason I lost interest in rock music. I used to like rock and metal in late middle school and early high school, but it seemed to be getting progressively worse and non-creative.
In the '60's there were a lot of experimental bands that used all kinds of instruments like theremins and synths, The '80's was pretty cool too (well at least for New Wave). The '90's had it's whole "alternative" scene. But now all it is is whiny emo or loud, screaming.

jmsbk12345 1 year ago
@jmsbk12345 Ha ha...At least if "they" understood the real basics of jazz, then
the newer music might be more melodic and interesting...
The Beatles instinctively new this....

If you want Psychedelic Rock at it's best, I recomend the fathers of it, The 13th Floor Elevators. Or of course, The Doors.
