SABENA could have survived if they hadn't the problems between Flemish and Walloons , this caused customer service amongst the Flemish their most properous part, I talked to many of them and they told it's a Walloon airline and prefered KLM or Lufthansa where they were treated better. That was the root cause of their not Swissair , my father was the Chief Engineer of SABENA one of the smartest he knew German , Flemish, English and French fluently plus all the aircraft they had .
@eduardalet Maybe you're right, but Swissair accelerated the bankruptcy by pushing SABENA to purchase a bunch of Airbus's which didn't serve for much. Also, the fact that the state had a part in the airline did not help in making it profitable. Frankly, 8000 people for 24 airplanes is not a good ratio... Seems bizarre to think that the succeeding companies (SNBA and Brussels Airlines) have, seemingly, not recorded a single year of losses...
