Aw.. i want to hug this baby boy.. too cute and so beautiful. Jus born and is alrdy standing at a height that i long for since i was twelve years old.
Have there been any studies done as to why zoo born babies either can't or won't be fed by their Mums? I'm loosing faith in the whole breeding programme thing. The parents aren't choosing each other. What's the point if all the babies are rejected by their parents and are being raised by humans? These bubs wouldn't survive in the wild (not that there is much left) and isn't that the point of these breeding programmes?
@verticalsmurf Actually a lot of zoos let their giraffe calves be mother-raised. However, Miles and his older sister Neema had to be human-fed because their mother Noel had a nursing problem where she couldn't make milk.
@joshscomputer - I wish they would point that out, and thanks for telling me.
It almost comes across as though the animals aren't capable of rearing their own bubs, so humans have to step in to save them (cringe), even though for the most part, we are why they are endangered.
@bettyx1138 They did the same thing with his big sister Neema, because their mom had a nursing problem where she couldn't make enough milk to feed them. RIP Noel (she died this summer.)
I couldnt have just stood there and not rubbed that funny lil head *lol*...giraffes are funny lookin but cute.....look at that lil mouth & nose tho *haha*...aww he is so cute!
This is really amazing tho...He is new to this world and she is probably the second being he's seen.....I think this is a crucial time during any neonates life, so hopefully they put him back with his mother soon after the interview.
i hope i can have a pet like miles. can you stop him from growing? just kidding. i just love to collect giraffes so much and wants to have a real pet.
Miles is living with his mom and the giraffe family at the Houston Zoo - he was only separate from them the first few days so we could establish bottle feeding. He is healthy and strong and growing taller each day!
If you come visit the zoo, you can arrange a Behind the Scenes Tour with the giraffes and possibly give Miles a cuddle! Not all the giraffes choose to interact at each visit, but I've been over there several times myself and been able to pat Miles and feed him.
How cuuuuuuuuute!!!!!!!! I live in California.. and one time when I went to the Los Angeles zoo, they had a baby girl giraffe there! It was so cute to see! =)
Its June 2009 now and I seen him yesterday. My whole family was looking at the elephants And I was setting alone by the giraffes when he came up to where I was setting; as if to say hi. He is nice.
omg this is so funny ..the giraffe is just standing there looking at the woman while shes talking its sooo funny 4 some reason..!!..but yea it look smart : )
I think this video is hilarious. The thing towers over her, yet it's just been born!
It's also funny because for that reason, the thing seems to know more than it actually does. It's like a little press conference about what the thing is going to eat, and he's standing there silently like some White House aid nodding in the background.
Giraffe - "Apparently I'll be drinking milk. I find this situation to be satisfactory. Okay, no more questions!"
@0debug - Wow, I left that comment a whole year ago, it says! 17 thumbs-up ratings in that time, but you're the first to reply to the comment, so it's the first time I've been reminded that I ever wrote it.
Anyway, yeah...it's almost as though it's an alien or something. I reminded of Mars Attacks, where you see all of the creatures, who are wide-eyed and unable to speak English...but still capable of understanding plenty.
"Noel is a gentle, attentive and good mother but doesnt make enough milk to nurse and raise her calves, said McGivern. So, the keeper staff will bottle feed the calf for at least six months, added McGivern."
He is so beautiful I just want to hold him. I have been a horseman for 30 years, and now I want a giraffe. I so badly want to just hold him I want to have a kiss from him. What is the legalities of owning a giraffe?
Why do you hand raise the babies? Has there been a problem getting them to nurse naturally off the mother giraffe? Of course that would have to be healthier than goat's milk substitute. He sure is cute!
salary is a joke. shitjob

@ForeverVachon - They do so eat their young! I've seen it. It was a horrible sight. This is why Zoos must take preventative action.

@verticalsmurf -- if you click on the video information to expand it, the zoo does explain exactly why the baby had to be bottle-fed.

@johnnytastetest I also got the feeling of a press conference. But more like the giraffe is thinking:
"Hm. Who are all these people behind the cameras? What world is this, by the way? Take me to your leader."
