Rugby is growing in the US. Although rugby isn't sanctioned by NCAA, it is still played at many top colleges. Popularity of rugby is growing in America especially on the west coast. We must learn and keep training to contend with the top teams like Australia, South Africa, NZ, Scotland, and the other many amazing teams. Im not excluding any of the teams! Im just happy that its growing in popularity and hopefully people in America will love rugby as much as the minority of rugby players here do.

Continued.... I passed up on scholarship offers at small DII and DIII schools and a preferred walk-on spot at a DI university to play rugby there because frankly it is more fun. Some of the top schools do treat rugby like an NCAA sport with full scholarships and such, but there are a bunch of schools that still see the school rugby team as the drinking team with a rugby problem. Many of the schools do not even allow the rugby teams to use the school mascot.
@connorboh. It is definately catching on in America. It isn't near where it needs to be, but it is getting there. The new College Premier League here in America which takes the top 32 teams from around the nation and puts them in their own league to try and enhance the competition here in the country is a huuuuge step in the right direction. There are also former high school football players that pass up on the opportunity to play college football to play rugby, myself being one of them.
Dude, this is coming from a brit. USA rugby will never advance to elite levels untill they get it as an NCAA sport. They need to promote it around the country more so that the American football players have something to do in their off season at high school and even college. Can you imagine how potencially good USA could be if they had players who didnt quite make the cut for the nfl playing rugby, they are pure athletes.

American football simply has such a huge following. We start to be taught (american) football from the same age as you learn rugby. Most people in the US start playing rugby at high school (15-18) at best. Some even start up as late as in college. It's simply not as pervasive as sports like football or baseball.
I disagree, an appropriate comparison would be if you learned rugby all your life in england, and then tried out american football when you got to college, formed a team in England, and tried to compete against american kids, who have been playing american football all their life. You'd get destroyed, just as we are in rugby. More and more already accomplished athletes are switching to rugby, but if it's going to become big here in the states it needs to be taught from a young age

@connorboh Actually, rugby IS a college sport, and UCal Berkley has one 26 out of the 30 titles since they have been contending for a US championship, the most recent this past weekend against BYU in a craker of a game, (which you can see on ESPN3.) However, it is in some high schools at the national, (state,) level, and they also now contend for a U.S. Title. Maybe, in about ten years, we can field a team that was as good as 1924 when we won the gold medal in the olympics, when 15s were there

I think eventually the team will get better as it gains popularity. There are a LOT of really good clubs in the Western states. i live in ky and the only clubs are like i said at just a couple of universities. there not even reconigzed as a D1 sport. its almost always club level, which means u dont get a scholarship to play it.

We must learn and keep training to contend with the top teams like Australia, South Africa, NZ, Scotland, and the other many amazing teams. Im not excluding any of the teams! Continued.... I passed up on scholarship offers at small DII and DIII schools and a preferred walk-on spot at a DI university to play rugby there because frankly it is more fun. Some of the top schools do treat rugby like an NCAA sport with full scholarships and such, but there are a bunch of schools that still see the school rugby team as the drinking team with a rugby problem. Many of the schools do not even allow the rugby teams to use the school mascot.

The new College Premier League here in America which takes the top 32 teams from around the nation and puts them in their own league to try and enhance the competition here in the country is a huuuuge step in the right direction. There are also former high school football players that pass up on the opportunity to play college football to play rugby, myself being one of them.

Dude, this is coming from a brit. USA rugby will never advance to elite levels untill they get it as an NCAA sport. They need to promote it around the country more so that the American football players have something to do in their off season at high school and even college. Can you imagine how potencially good USA could be if they had players who didnt quite make the cut for the nfl playing rugby, they are pure athletes.

American football simply has such a huge following. We start to be taught (american) football from the same age as you learn rugby. Most people in the US start playing rugby at high school (15-18) at best. Some even start up as late as in college. It's simply not as pervasive as sports like football or baseball.

I disagree, an appropriate comparison would be if you learned rugby all your life in england, and then tried out american football when you got to college, formed a team in England, and tried to compete against american kids, who have been playing american football all their life. You'd get destroyed, just as we are in rugby. More and more already accomplished athletes are switching to rugby, but if it's going to become big here in the states it needs to be taught from a young age

@connorboh Actually, rugby IS a college sport, and UCal Berkley has one 26 out of the 30 titles since they have been contending for a US championship, the most recent this past weekend against BYU in a craker of a game, (which you can see on ESPN3.) However, it is in some high schools at the national, (state,) level, and they also now contend for a U.S. Title. Maybe, in about ten years, we can field a team that was as good as 1924 when we won the gold medal in the olympics, when 15s were there

Australia plays the game obsessively in every school, every district rugby is played. something like 10% of New Zelanders play rugby and have dominated the game since the turn of last centrary. i doubt USA will ever be able to keep up with players like Keven Mealamu, Jerome Kaino, Joe Rokocoko and Dan Carter

@Lycanthrope31 especialy as they are using 3rd rate Australian, New Zeland players. I agree i would like to see NFL skills transfered to Rugby. it would really promote the game in the States and in NRL it happens all the time in Australia

@JOONGSEIS Yeah, that, and they take guys right out of college who haven't played the game that long, or who are just former track stars. I think eventually the team will get better as it gains popularity. There are a LOT of really good clubs in the Western states. Its also pretty sweet that they showed the college 7's games on NBC a few weeks ago. Gets the name out there.

The only things are that are most important is the six nations, the northern/southern tours, the world cup and lions tour.
TBH i'd say america is the same level as canada and that's not something to be happy about.
I can't wait to see the usa against ireland and austrailia. maybe then the clovers and wallabies can show them how to play real rugby

thats what i ment by an entire rugby team from america during that time, with mostly american football players won the gold.
and to be honest no offense to the game but its pretty damn boring to watch.

and it's better to watch than say football/soccer. it's more fast pased, higher risk of injury and in general if you have a good commentary it makes it all the more funnier (then again the welsh commentary is like that).
it's all to do with the level of rugby, of course it's going to be boring if both teams arn't that good.

but with posession, there is no set time limit. it's like keepies that way, one team can keep it for a long while while the other team tries to keep it away. They use rucks to keep it away.
And I also think you need to know what's happening to enjoy it. I guess that's for every sport though. You need to know what a try, conversions, ruck, lineout, scrum etc is.

because when ur a good athlete u go to college to play and rugby there is very little to none. besides there are very (and when i say very i mean none) few places to play legit rugby in this country at all. most players play for clubs like in california or richer parts of the country.

i live in ky and the only clubs are like i said at just a couple of universities. there not even reconigzed as a D1 sport. its almost always club level, which means u dont get a scholarship to play it.
the sport is not popular here by anymeans. believe i would like to play it but there is nowhere to play it.

@nelsoncards u dnt have to get scholarships to play rugby.rugby is a league and union game.maybe it just doesn't work out wth u guys.ths countries that play rugby well dnt hve thngs like college rugby to such a large extent, rugby is played under open league and union level,open meaning ur skill qualifies u for the team.its just like soccer.evn soccer isn't popular, but ur team sure does gve a hell of a fyt, ol am sayn is tht th few guys playin need ot hve some heart for the game.

i wouldnt mind trying it. i played american football for 10years of my life so that would help.
i love sports and the competition it encumbers. its just that in this short lifetime u cant do it all. ecspecially given the circumstances of where u are located in the world :)
