  • Struggle to remember this knot for some reason but your video (& I've tried a few) helped me crack it - thanks!

  • Just My advice buts it's hard to read and see what details your doing. Not that I don't like the tunes. Just saying

  • Excellent tutorial man! I got it 1st go here! Unlike all the other shitty vids ppl postin out there! =D

  • Very nice video .

The first method is an outside bowline and only has 75 % of its strength, and has a tendency to slip. Pass the bunny around the other side of the tree for an inside bowline just like you have done in the second method.

check out my channel for the Truckers hitch.

  • cheers. I need to know this knot coz i sail in a mirror dinghy and u need this knot

  • tail is on the inside of loop at end wrong. folding the initial loop backwards.

  • What song is this it's great...also taught me hot to do the not!

  • Not a good exhibit on how to tie the bowline.

  • tied wrong

  • the bunny goes around the tree the other way .They way you did it only has 75 % of its strength and is called an outside bowline

  • A better way of thinking of this is just trying to use the loop to pull the tree trunk toward the whole.

  • Best Bowline vid I've ever seen. The music makes it happen!

  • that's great tune in the background... who is that?

  • This is not an official bowline. (see The Ashley Book of Knots (knot #2066)). After the "bunny" comes out of the hole it goes down the right side of the tree and comes up on the left. However, there is no evidence that this version is inferior in any way (see The Art of Knotting and Splicing, Cyrus Day, Third Edition, knot #58G). It is, as previously noted, a left-handed bowline.

  • ... hahahahahah xD

  • @QuebecCharlie: Totally agree with you. I believe they call the video method a dutch bowline. Its been a while but I seen online where they tested both methods for strenght and they were virtually identical. PS if a scout uses this video method (no badge).

  • i think this is the sheet bend

  • @guitarcrazed188: a BEND means tying 2 ends of rope together. A sheet bend is a great camping knot for splicing 2 ropes together.

  • this knot is still a bowline and will do what its supposed to do, but its the left handed version of the bowline. the difference is, in which direction "the bunny" goes "around the tree". in the normal version of the bowline, the rope will go the other way around.

  • thank you so much. I needed that knot for scouts 2nite.

  • Thank you for putting this on youtube. It's very hepful and my mom still can't do it. LOL

  • Please remove this video. You tied the knot wrong.

  • what is this knot used for?

  • well the way you tie the knot makes it nearly impossible to slip up, I've heard that you can use it for emergency climbing equipment (I.E. if your harness breaks)

  • The second version looks hard

  • it's kind of funny... well, because you tied the knot wrong.

  • it is actually 100% right dude. (i think)

  • It's an outside bowline, which is technically a knot. But when you say your going to tie a bowline, this generally means an inside one.

  • What, co you can tie them up? Ha

  • would too.

  • The Zukai book on hojojutsu illustrates this knot tied this way. While it is not the standard method it is "A Method" and it is indeed a bowline.

  • The first knot in the video is tied wrongly. The 'bunny' must go the other way around the 'tree', otherwise the knot won't withstand uneven pulling

  • I'm glad I'm not the only person who noticed that. Good call.

  • No, that's just a variant called the "Dutch" or "Cowboy" Bowline

  • It still doesn't change the fact that this knot won't withstand uneven pull, which means that the knot is basically useless.

  • rofl.

  • lol nice i got an armadillo in my back yard and im makin a snare to catch it and this is a knot they say to make they say to make a bowline on a bite...how do i do that

  • THIS IS FUCKING CONFUSING I CANT FIGURE IT OUT!!!! GOD FUCKING DAMMIT!! it comes out of the "hole" then im lost, i cant figure how to hold it where u go around and then when to put back thru the "hole"

  • thats because ur a downy. its simple instructions.

  • wrong, this is a bad video, and has bad explanation. i found another, almost identicle except way simpler.

  • It's reversed? I still learned how to do it from you, so thanks!

  • Yea thanks alot! I just moved to Maine to work on a sailboat. So this was a must-learn knot and you just helped me do that by just whatching this twice!

  • Glad I found this! I had another website saved in my faves on my old puter, but lost it...this will be much easier to revisit as needed. Thanks!

  • I don't care if it's reversed or not. At last I know how to do this bloody knot. THANKS :)

  • thanks heaps for this vid..life saver..

    believe it or not!

  • Your bunny method is reversed, making a dutch bowline. the working end should go around the standing part in the opposite direction.

  • yup, exactly right. I'll have to revise the vid.

  • @tchoctube So, after 3 years is this knot still being shown tied wrong? If that was made clear one way or the other, I wouldn't be asking...

  • @tchoctube But this version is actually the superior version of the bowline, so do not change it! This is the maritime way of tying the bowline since it is more sturdy! We call the other version the false bowline.

  • This is also called the "cowboy bowline"
