God this song brings back cherished memories from my childhood. My brother and I used to play this repeatedly on the record player and pretend to sing it and play the instruments lol! Great times in the 80's, beats the now, kids have more now in the way of stuff but much less in the way of the freedoms we had growing up. I used to disappear off all day in the summer with a couple of sandwiches, bottle of squash and little brother in toe and come back when our tea would be ready, bliss!
This is such a well-done song in every way. From the performance and arrangements, to the 10cc smooth production values. I love the chord changes and the little counter melodies in the backing vocals. First rate all around!
At the pub where I work, there are two bars, one very busy, and one usually very tranquil and peaceful. Sometimes I come into the quiet bar from the other one, and this song is playing and I just feel so relaxed. I actually heard this song first on 'Never Mind the Buzzcocks', I wasn't aware of the song as I am only 16, but I really like this song, great sounds.
Hard to think why anyone should dislike this song. Great harmonies and composition, phrasing and a really appropriate guitars solo. Similar great song, How 'bout us, by Champaign, people working together. It is not a "raw" song but has soul in it, plus real talent.
Hello, and thanks for your sympathy. He would have taken me, but it was a holiday to be shared with his daughter her partner and her two children at her home there. He lost his wife a year ago at the end of May, and this will be the first time he's seen his daughter since the funeral. His son, as well as her know of me, and accept that we're close, but only close friends, not how we really are, they don't and won't know that for some time yet. I have a son in Scotland, where in Scotland are you
Was Paul Young the singer? I was shocked because I thought it was the other Paul Young that passed away!!!! However, the fact that someone with talent like this is dead, is sad......
A mate of mine tried to commit suicide last weekend only about 37 wife and two young kids not sure what troubles he has but I wish his kids could get him to listen to the chorus and try to deal with the demons within if it was only that easy.
When i was 14 yrs old in the 70s me mum died and i remenber her playing this all the time and after finding it i am so pleased and actuly was able to let me mums death go and be healed , i no it seems mobid but these memorys are awsome and help me to cope even now as a grand dad god rest her soul

@carbonbodyworker Dude I'm 17 and a musician (and I'd like to think I'm good looking) and absolutely hate this shit that that's popular in music now. Hell I discovered this band by looking on the wiki page of Swan Song, Zeppelin's record label, so we're not all ignorant.
@carbonbodyworker The 'talent' shows to which you refer are all about the adverts inbetween and personal drama which now seems to be played out daily on the front page of the red tops!! Saturday night TV sucks balls. great song btw. moan over.
@Bennob1969 Paul lived near me on Altrincham road near the royal oak pub circa 77/78....they used to rehearse over the road in a hall....i think 10cc did too.
Well my ex thought he he had a great arse and was really fit. I just loved his voice. The rest of the band weren't bad either in their own right, apart from the dodgy drummer (only jokin Dave).
Yeah have to say they weren't a bad looking lot but ol Paul does it for me even when older in the Mechanics he was still cracking. Does anyone know if a book was ever done on Cafe or Paul cos I'd love to get my grubby little hands on one!!!
When this song came out there was no internet, mp3, ipod, and i had to record this on my fucking portable cassette recorder off my parents radiogram, i suppose you call that progress huh...?
I remember this band, first saw them when they followed Suzi Quatro's "She's In Love With You" on Top Of The Pops. Nice tune, but the album cover the song came from was absolutely gross and horrific for its time.
saw him sing this newcastle with mike and the mechanics new the song and new it was sad cafe but didnt know he was called paul young sadley he`s dead now but left us with a great song rip paul
