  • Sorry, his version of 4'33" is too noisy and nervous. But nice try. Like)

    ;)

  • Yet another person who just doesn't get what Cage was trying to say.

    P.S.

Get a new camera. That noise is terrible.

  • hahahahahahah

  • 1:18 srry that was a mistake XD

  • boy, how long did it take you to get this good? i mean this is just mad skills right here ^^

  • And another youtube user expresses his ignorance about John Cage.

  • @thefrankonion Another classical music snob continues to bury himself in the mud of pretentiousness and ignorance.

  • LOL~ i love the rock version

  • I used to like 4`33 but then i took an arrow in the knee

  • This guy needs to see a speech instructors. Say it with me now: Sssssss......not thhhhhssssss

  • The thing that sucks is that you can't tell if he's serious or not.

  • @ThemOldaBoys

1:16 makes it obvious that he's not serious.

  • Hilarious! You sir, are a legend!

  • i love the rock version

  • 1:16 lol

  • Ohh dats de most b-e-a-utiful piece of music I have ever heard!

  • I messed it up, accidentally played a note. :X

  • Finally a piano piece I can play!

  • Awesomeness. You're hands are so fast we can't hear or see them; that's John Cage's secret ;)

  • how the fuck do you make a mistake in this song

  • @KnobbTwistt it's a joke.

  • does anybody else hear popcorn popping in the background

  • I know you are giving a didactical exposé, but it's not supposed to be performed in private, but to an audience.

  • It's great, how, even after making that one mistake at 1:18, you not only continue to play it flawlessly, but actually look away from the keyboard, while playing. Amazing.

  • I preffer "xxxartist" version, it´s better even if he´s XXX ... ¬¬

    Great outstanding playing!

  • you are actually not playing it right....

  • We actually had to learn to play any musical piece on the piano (by ourselves) and the only condition was it to be over 4 minutes long...

I was the only one who came up to use this ...Got an A on creativity.

  • {insert ironic comment here}

  • Marvellous, astonishing talent! Real tough piece to play huh

  • cool, finally a song i could play at the first attempt.

  • Haha, nice one.

  • When my music teacher got fustrated he woiuld say to a student sit at the piano and learn 4'33.

  • Thanks, man. You helped me a lot, kinda hard to find a decent tutorial for such a great piece of music. You are my hero now.

  • I have never been able to find a proper tutorial. The piece was hard but i finally learned the first minute.

  • Oh my goodness i love it ^_^

  • i tip my hat to you good sir very funny

  • This is the most amazing thing I've ever seen. I applaud you.

  • Shhhh.. silence. he's playing the keyboard.

  • where can I dl this tune?

  • Your mistake at 1:18 was hilarious ...

  • HAHAHAH this is Brilliant!

  • Ha ha I like the "mistake" in the middle.

  • Guys I'm actually John Cage's reincarnation, and I say this is a blasphemy to everything that John Cage has created. When I was John Cage, it HAD to be done with a grand piano, and HAD to use a stop-watch, and HAD to put the lid down. These parts of the performance were NOT trivial. In fact, 4'33" had NOTHING to do with silence, and ALL TO DO WITH the stopwatch and putting the lid down.

  • I have just wasted 10 minutes of my life...why did i watch this? lol it's not even a tutorial cos theres no music to play!

  • Comment removed

  • Love it, great work!

  • @horowizard I think you should shut up. After looking at your profile and the comments you make on other videos, it's appears that you're nothing but a snobby little know-it-all. Your opinion doesn't matter. John Cage doesn't need people like you sticking your nose into things that go way over your head. He knew when he composed the piece that not everyone was going to accept it or treat it a certain way so stop wasting your time and stop being such a pretentious asshole.

  • @seripmavevolI What Cage doesn't need are people like this jerk spoofing his work because he can't play.

As far as my opinion goes, I give praise where praise is due, but shit like this I refuse to tolerate. And you have no idea what Cage had in mind when he conceived this piece.

  • I can't help but wonder if John Cage just did this to see how many people would buy the bullcrap.

  • Anybody who doesn't like 4'33'' obviously hasn't heard the country version.

  • @casestudyification "country version" I'm laughing so hard right now.

  • "sorry that was a mistake"

  • I actually like this.

    Am I weird?

  • that's 9:56 not 4:33 !! F A I L

  • @natalianiarchou 4'33'' is the play time, it's divided in movements, the time between the movements, as well the time before and after doesn't count.

  • @sandokas fail fail fail!!!!! :P

  • 1'18" - GREAT - ahahahahahahahah - but you should study more and slowly.....

  • i want to punch john cage

  • YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!!!!!

  • You bloody shit!

That space there was the surrounding blank spaces i want u to imagine i would insult and humiliate u bitch LOLOLOL

  • that was not a mistake. it happens, in the silence :p

  • Cage = genius, you can't even observe the sound of that washing machine in the background - symbolic of an existence which clearly consists of circular lameness, bad hair doos, the only thing you fucked up is your moms ass. You are cheap washing machine detergent.

  • I thought the intructions for 4'33 were "In a situation provided with maximum amplification, perform a disciplined action." Why does it have to be at a piano?

  • The good part is that we have found the language to communicate with aliens. Probably we won't get, but sure we won't be disapointed with answer...

  • WTF? it's complete silence..how can you say this is an outstanding piece? stupid.

  • @DalekQueen You obviously didn't get the point of the music.

  • Well, this IS better than dubstep.

  • John cage is a pretentious asshole that should be shot for this piece of shit he calls 'music'.

Props to the guy taking the piss out of him.

  • I can play that song with my left nutsack

  • You're a great teacher! It took only a fews hours learn it. Thanks!

  • @horowizard This is comedy. It's not supposed to be conformed to reality. It's just not the point. You're the one who don't understand a shit to this video and need to keep his mouth shut.

  • I adore how ridiculously defensive so many people are getting over this. I may not be a master when it comes to the arts but I have a decent enough knowledge of music to get me by. This has clearly been done for humour so what were you really expecting? If you just want to go on some complete hissy fit then fine but do it by yourself because you're not exactly going to convince him otherwise acting like a pompous smart-arse & thinking you're better than him. For the record, I found it hilarious.

  • @18MonthsDJames LOL my thoughts exactly.

  • There are tons of mistakes in this.

First of all, the conductor/pianist is NOT supposed to make any noise. That is for the audience.

Second, the conductor/pianist MUST have the score in front of him, and must turn the pages at the exact appropriate moments.

You may think "But how can there be rules to a piece with no notes?" I'll tell you, because '4'33' wouldn't be "4'33" without John Cage's instructions.

That's my professor talking, not me

  • You're supposed to use a stopwatch and an actual piano with a lid that you close on the keyboard. Above all, keep your damn mouth shut. You blew it.

  • @horowizard What are you talking about? Who told you that? The rules for this piece are not that specific. You could perform it on air guitar for all John Cage cares.

  • Comment removed

  • @horowizard Yes, because anonymous senseless Internet hate is clearly the classiest thing one can do. You're so far above me that I can't even see you up there! I wish I was so entirely awesome! Oh dear me!

  • @egyptiansushi Just as I thought. Zero on all points. Another blithering idiot who doesn't know what he's talking about, yet he is trying to be clever by attempting comedy in the guise of an instructional forum. I'm reading some of the other comments here and I get the sense that I am not alone in my opinions. I don't hate but I do urge that you keep your mouth shut.

  • @horowizard Did you think there was a possibility that this was not a comedy video? Why would you need to 'learn' how to play a silent piece? Why would I have mistakes?

  • @egyptiansushi You're right. In my opinion, even if it's a serious piece, and that the the first goal with this piece was to prove that silence doens't exist, play it live several times is a kind of joke, even if it's still interessant, musicaly speaking =)

  • @egyptiansushi well, he messed up. Opening his damn mouth in the middle of the song.

  • @horowizard Deja vu anyone...

  • @horowizard Oh stop being such a prick. Part of the point of Youtube is that anyone can put there interpretations out there. John Cage is a genious and and I can assure you that because he is open to interpretations, which is what music is. And besides no one made you watch this video. Besides, you used the word blithering so you lose all credibility anyways.

  • @docawsome530 Interpreting is one thing. Being a complete buffoon in the guise of an intellectual joke is another. The definition of blithering is to blather. Senselessly talkative, babbling; used chiefly as an intensive to express annoyance or contempt. I think it is you who lacks credibility when you use terms like "anyways'.

  • @horowizard haha Woops. You got me. I knew one of the ways was wrong cause my friend always corrects me when I say it wrong.

  • @docawsome530 And did your friend also correct your misspelling of the word 'genius'? Gotcha again.. ; )

  • @horowizard get a sence of humour you dick.. plus how can john cage get credit for sitting in silence beacause i can do it in my sleep

  • Comment removed

  • @horowizard how can you claim i couldnt play the 433, i can garantee you everybody could play it, its suposed beauty is in its simplicity, plus you just stand for 4.33 and do nothing so actually there is FUCK ALL TO PLAY

  • @80sanime1 I didn't say you couldn't play it. What I meant was you couldn't come up with the concept, that being a piece of music where the performer is silent for a prescribed temporal duration.

  • @horowizard your realy not getting it are you ? he did not write create or conduct the silence that existed with in that 433 , he had NO original concept, a lot of people have at somepoint tryed to just be quiet for a while and try and listen to the silence even though there is no sound in silence, so it is certainly not an original idea. thats my opinion anyway, either way you look at it he does nothing what so ever lol

  • @80sanime1 Not opinion. Fact.

  • @NeverAloneForever are you in agreement with what i said or disagreement ?

  • @80sanime1 Both technically. You stated that what you said was opinion. I'd say it's fact. So I guess I'm agreeing there. lol

  • @horowizard Don't worry. It was just a social construct. Just how people react to something. I don't. It's nothing.

  • @horowizard I'm totally just imagining some English guy in a tuxedo who talks all "snobby-like" after reading this comment. I've been told, as a music student, that some music people can be really big, unnecessary douches, but I didn't truly realize it until I read this.

  • @chrisbinchris And as a music teacher I would recommend that you curb that attitude. The point here is that before you go and stick your smarmy face on camera and start to piss all over the John Cage catalogue, you must go through the real work and learn all that came previous to New Music so you can know what you're talking about. There's a big difference between witty and stupid.

  • @horowizard Smarmy? You sure sound like a music teacher...

  • @nate862554 I can't believe I'm doing this but here goes:

    Definition of SMARMY

1: revealing or marked by a smug, ingratiating, or false earnestness

2: of low sleazy taste or quality

  • @horowizard I meant that as in who the hell uses smarmy anymore, most music teachers are usually old or super nerds.

  • @nate862554 And who can tell what in hell you meant? This is the incoherent ramblings of an ignorant dolt. And you know fuck all about music teachers.

  • @horowizard And you sure act like all the music teachers too, like you know everything better then everyone else. Dont deny it, look back at all your other comments. Quit being a prick to everyone and go play a flute.

  • @chrisbinchris Agreed, just watching this video was amusing , douche-bags like him deserve to be on the street.

  • @chrisbinchris Agreed, just watching this video was amusing , douche-bags like him deserve to be on the street.

  • @horowizard Ok we get it you talked to him. Now go complain somewhere else. Everyone (at least most people) understood he was doing it for the lulz. You should study "How to understand 21st Century Irony" under some good teacher.

  • @horowizard Well, it happens so, that I study Musical Composition as well, and can't believe the bullshit you're pouring here. I even asked some of my professors. You couldn't be more wrong. Stopwatch? Have you ever seen pianist using stopwatch? Good one, man. Lid that you close? Bet saw it on youtube. Go see it live, huh? Anyway you're just a little cog in the Internet Hate Machine.

Btw. it's funny how easy is to say "I studied XXX" just to add yourself some ego. Just like I just did.

  • @tomekstable Yes, I did happen to see a pianist use a stopwatch and he did open and close the lid. I don't know what your professors are telling you, but this was years before the internet, YouTube and you yourself even existed. The pianist was one Mister John Cage.

  • @horowizard My professors don't tell my anything - I don't study anything connected with music. The point of my comment is that, as we're all anonymus, instead of throwing "I studied X so I know what I'm talking about" or "I'd listened to Y before u were born", we should back our opinion up. Another point - this is music, not physics. U can do with it whatever you want. There is no "Hey, you're suposed to do it THAT way". E.g. listen to this watch?v=wmqHqyu1a3I Is it the way it should be played?

  • @tomekstable The premiere of the three-movement 4'33″ was given by David Tudor on August 29, 1952, at Woodstock, New York as part of a recital of contemporary piano music. The audience saw him sit at the piano and, to mark the beginning of the piece, close the keyboard lid. Some time later he opened it briefly, to mark the end of the first movement. This process was repeated for the second and third movements.

  • @horowizard I agree. This is how the original was played. Still, anybody can perform his "reinterpretation" (definitely too big a word in the case of this vid).

  • @horowizard John Cage would probably also be disappointed in someone being an elitist prick. He was an eclectic man who liked sound, not a presumptuous ass.

  • @Valkyriefury Wow! I'm not at all surprised at how little you actually do know. What astounds me is just how you are so willing to show your rampant ignorance to the rest of the world. Everybody here thinks they know exactly what John Cage was all about, don't they?

  • @horowizard I'm sure you know him so well from shaking his hand after a concert you pretentious music majoring prick. John Cage is an interesting eccentric, not a genius. Again, the man liked sounds, it's why the dude did so much hardware hacking.

  • @Valkyriefury Well, based on your moronic comments I can tell that I know more about him than you.

I never said I majored in music. You are assuming he's a 'dude interested in sound'. His philosophy ran so much deeper than that. You embarrass yourself. He's interesting only to persons interested in 20th Century Music. To state that Cage was not an elitist.. Well it can't be more clear that you in fact have no clue. "Oh, it's cool to do this as a joke because it's Cage." What a jerk.

  • @horowizard Well if he really was an elitist I can't say I feel a shred of guilt for him being mocked. Same with mocking you.

  • @Valkyriefury Look, the truth is Cage would probably not have appreciated this video but he would be fascinated by it enough to write a Piece For 1000 Computers in response. Each one set to play a different YouTube video of babbling idiots like yourself and this guy here. My point here is the man is dead. Let's not piss all over his catalogue.

  • @horowizard lol horowizard, I feel bad for you for studying 4 minutes and 33 seconds of fucking silence. how about you come to my house when im sleeping and you can get 8 hours of silence instead

  • @horowizard Well I have to infrom you that what your professor told you is from the perpective of a musician. But as you may know John Cage wasn't a musician only, he was a member of the Fluxus movement. And the background of this movement was a philosophical, music was an "instrument" for the Fluxus movement.

So if you really want to argue about the way, how this piece has to be played, you have to do it from a philosophical point of view too.

I personally can t argue from neither one.

  • @FluxuV Perhaps then in this case the best judgment to exercise here is judgment deferred. Cage's involvement as a member of the Fluxus Movement is irrelevant. The video makes a poor joke at the composer's expense and it is disrespectful. Since Cage is not here to defend himself, don't you think it is best that his work be treated in a manner more befitting than a cheap joke?

  • @horowizard Look, there are books that discuss exactly the question, how to interpret 4'33. These books are from the perspective of the Fluxus movement, cause for John Cage it was a philosopy of life.

If you dont like the way this guy interprets it, thats fine. Its your right. But i don't understand why it upsets you. There are always internet jerks, so if you dont like it, dont watch it. I ve seen millions of people who interpreted Beethoven and Mozart totally wrong, but thats normal.

  • @FluxuV This is not interpreting. This is some snotty punk kid bending over, showing you his asshole and saying it's OK because it's John Cage. For this he needs a serious beating. Millions of wrong interpretations sounds to me like a gross exaggeration.

  • @horowizard arrogance makes any man educated in 20th century music sound like an asshole. besides... i doubt there was any composition to this "piece"

  • Comment removed

  • @egyptiansushi Actually, you cannot play it on air guittar because no one would expect music to come from it. The idea is to set the audience in a state of "hearing music" which will create a musical perception on the listener. Some argue that only the most tallented - and well known - musicians can play this work because they will be the most able to put the audience in that state. The bottom line is "all that vibrates, is music" including vent noises and mistaken notes.

  • @horowizard You're wrong, Tudor played it like you say but John Cage wrote this "For any instrument or combination of instruments", you can make the movements last any lenght of time and play it as you want.

  • @Binouzours Yes, and keep your bloody mouth shut! Where in the score does it say that the performer is free to make stupid jokes and idiotic comments?

  • @horowizard Oh come on, it's funny, he's just joking.

  • @Binouzours Well I didn't appreciate it. I thought he was just stupid.

  • @horowizard Maybe he is, I don't know.

  • @horowizard

I think Cage would have found this entertaining. I doubt Cage meant for the piece to be pretentious the way you interpret it to be. No, this isn't an 'authentic' version (obviously because it's comical) but 4'33" isn't about strictness in music performance :l

  • @BenRig811 I disagree. I find this piece to be of the utmost strictness. Think about it. Most of the morons of the world today wouldn't be able to keep their fool mouths shut for 10 seconds, let alone 4 and a half minutes. I wish everyone here would stop pretending to try and second-guess John Cage because most of them haven't got the slightest idea about what he was trying to accomplish.

  • @horowizard what he is trying to acomplish is to show the fucken stupidity of pompous fucken arsholes like yourself

  • @80sanime1 Yeah look who is talking here. You know you're in trouble when you use words like 'arsholes'

  • @horowizard like this piece of trash you make no sence what so ever you idiot lol

  • @80sanime1 Oh, I'm the idiot, am I? Who taught you how to spell? The word is 'sense' you ignoramus. If I were you, I would remove that comment, unless you're quite comfortable showing the entire world what a complete dolt you are

  • @horowizard haha what a fucking dick you are , who gives a shit about spelling mistakes on youtube lol your pathetic

  • @80sanime1 Really, who gives a shit about you? I see you can spell 'dick' which I'm sure is something you know about very well.

  • @horowizard get a life

  • @80sanime1 Oh.. That's funny, Mister Originality.

  • The fact that you can spoof John Cage, and get such visceral reaction from 'Tubers, shows just how powerful an artist he was. The real 4:33 shows how powerful a "rest" is within a composition, just as important as the note making a sound. If there were no rests, we would only have constant noise. Check out any Thelonious Monk improvisation to see a perfect balance of silence and sound.

  • @schnefsky I agree that there must be a balance between silence and sound (I prefer to use sound over noise because the word noise does not have the right connotation within the context of music. Plus sound starts with an s just as silence; like S&S, ew, it sounds like a law firm. LOLOL...)

  • Did you really have to edit this video? I know this is a public domain, but please do some actual research before attempting to "teach" us how to play it.

  • @thewoff07 what

  • @thewoff07 lol these people are just dunce:) they have no musical competency or whatsoever. they're JUST slum on the streets;)

  • Lmao. That just made me laugh so hard. First time I've ever witnessed someone fuck up this piece. lol

  • more like 9:56 instead of 4:33

  • One note..."sorry, that was a mistake" HAHAHA!!!!

  • with all the air conditioner noise this is pretty damn far from silence, and therefor, from 4'33

  • @martimtavares It's strange when people who seem to pretend to know so much about something but clearly do not. The whole point of 4'33" is the background noise and other non-instrument sounds that occur during a performance.

  • @egyptiansushi but its about the noises in the room you are hearing...not bad-microphone-noises...

  • @martimtavares Actually, this piece consists on the sounds of the environment.

  • Oooh my God! Thank you so so so much... Now I know how to play this song.... Yaaaay! :D But still need to practice, cause its really hard to learn.... xD lol Now im getting crazy XD

  • Also, am I the only person that finds watching this to be really, really oddly peaceful?

  • Wasted 5 minutes of your life

  • @Christer1995

Way more productive than watching whatever's on the tv nowadays :)

  • @LostBlossom Perhaps you're right

  • Bullshit much?

  • Your mere existence pisses me off.

  • Needs more cowbell.

  • @pilcharddotorg nah. i prefer the ukelele version

  • and WTF YOU PLAYED IT A LITTLE SLOWLY AT THE START?
