Porter is actually quite on the money here. Shame he sold out and became a government stooge who did everything in his power to bring down the student movement.
Who are the beneficiaries of the fees? the banks- they get the interest from students' fee repayments.
If a student wants to pay back early (to avoid the interest) they will have a penalty levied against them whereas, the wealthy will incure no charges at all if they pay upfront!
Bankers bonuses and low corperation tax is fine!
Micheal Moore was right in- Capitalism: A Love Story. It makes me sick what they are doing to ordinary people to enrich the few.
What they dont tell people about student loans is that until you do get this mythical 21,000 a year job the interest is still adding up on the loan so either you work for the rest of your life for under 21,000 (In spite of inflation etc) Or you spend years looking for a job then get wacked with the interest payments on student loans. You hear of peole leaving 25,000 in debt add the interest to this and its just a licence to print money.
@Summerbkh Oh and in case anyone thinks I am some "Moaning student" I actually left University years ago at a time when it was actually free. I just happen to see many people now loaded down with debt for the rest of their lives having 200 or more quid a month taken out of their pay packet. Seeing people now telling sons and daughters "Sorry I just cant afford to send you to University"
Lost all respect for GG...the fool still thinks Binladen did 9/11...regardless of all the evidence, he wont even entertain any ideas against the "Official theory" so a big FUCK YOU GG
@MrGilles1990 hey there you son of a thousand fathers, is that how you spell Osama...well your fucking wrong you prick its actually spelt USAMA...big man behind his mothers pc...come say it too my face you cunt!
Don't fall for the popular misconception that a University degree guarantees everything. Degrees prove you can pass exams, nothing else. They provide no indication of a person's character, personality or whether they've an ounce of common sense in their whole body.
I've a masters in Pharmacy from a Russell group Uni, however I still believe most degrees (including most of the illustrious Science degrees) are a complete waste of time and have zero relevance to everyday "working" life.
@triwillb Also seeing as you would have been prepared to pay 100k for your degree, and say for example the vast majority of this was borrowed money, how long it would be before you would be able to afford a mortgage for a house? Forget a house, with 70 grand of debt hanging over your shoulder being able to eat would be a luxury.
I'll leave you with this thought, on average most tradesmen eg Plumbers, Electricians earn more than Solicitors, teachers, Engineers etc and no debt to boot.
@culchie1982 - Globally we are at the start of a major transition towards a knowledge-based economy. Those with high value skills will become a global commodity, those without will get left behind. Gaps between rich and poor will increase significantly. This will be stimulated by knowledge, not wealth. Wait until China, India, Brazil get going. While we've promoted futility, they've focused on science and technology, the fruits of which are going to shape our very futures.
@triwillb They're filling you full of crap at uni, knowledge is important but not the be all and end end all. Hard work and graft are much important. Next time you call out a plumber or Electrician take note of the fee he charges. Then equate in your head, how long it would take you to earn the same after big bite out of your ass from the taxman (assuming you work PAYE). Further education is a fraud, and only there to line the back pockets of unis and tutors
@culchie1982 - why don't you ask the average electrician / plumber what the next 5-10 years holds for them... somehow how i don't think its too good based on the cuts.
being able to adapt to change is the most important thing for me and a strong degree provides that - i can move anywhere in the world within 2 months to find a job (if needs be). my father does roofing - we've nearly lost everything (house etc) several times - never want to go through that again - made me physically sick.
@culchie1982 - while this is a little OTT, i think its a pretty good statement
YouTube search "Pirates of Silicon Valley scene - "You make people need you""
And if you can actually increase efficiency and reduce costs in a given process, you become a valuable asset because you free up money. understanding how wealth is created is fundamental to understanding the value of a degree.
perhaps discounts should be given to the degrees that are more productive, i am all for that.
Try Open University, mate. Nowhere near the sheer ridiculous fees, and highly respected by employers. The only difference is that you need a lot more initiative to complete your degree and you do miss out on the student life... but if you want drunken sex, go to your nearest town on a Saturday night and that's that issue solved.

@7jem331 Brilliant point, I didn't know that the interest accrued whilst waiting for a job- that's just disgusting!

I would have paid well over £100,000 to get my degree and get ahead of the next guy. Cost of securing my future? Priceless.
