  • Am ?

  • One word.. Awesome

  • Very nice playing indeed. Simple and not too many show-off-phrases. Great swing, but be careful so you don't run away from your backing :)

  • Of course, an Otto Link. Haha, I've been needing to get myself a HR. I've been using a Metal SuperTone, NY style.

  • What mic are you using?

  • Very Nice

  • hey btw, what was the tips you put out? i would love to hear it

  • Well actually, it sounds really really good! Keep it up!

  • Awesome!

  • Viva Tenor!!!

  • all good mate. very smooth. could go outside a little more- kick off some triads from the 9ths/11ths and pop through some more changes/substitutes. I'd be happy in a club with this!

  • I like very much what you do...and your sound . i also have a tenor and like to copy you ..keep on it !!

  • any ne got some tips on improv..... im pretty good like i can play changes but i still need some practice

  • Improvising is playing your soul (for me), there are only people that are more experienced and that's all, i guess you can call them pro's. Let no one put you down! Play and let your soul sing!

  • YOU ARE THE BEST,THANKS FOR POSTING

  • More More More! please...

  • What type of microphone is that? Fanstastic playing!

  • your great!

  • man, post more of your playing!!! fantastic tone !!

  • love your sound!

  • Comment removed

  • love it cheers

  • Thanks for posting Pete Thomas site, that was exactly what I was looking for. :-)

  • At 2:02, a phrase from "Love For Sale"?

  • not consciously, but it does sound like it, I use love for sale a lot as a reference, a great tune!

  • You have a great sound. Kudos.

  • it doesnt take a professional to know that it was good. this is the kind of video that helps me be a better player. 5+/5

  • Whoever criticized you is a dafty. I loved it. Mellow pure notes and the improvisation fitted in perfectly. I'm learning it on a Soprano Sax starting 3rd octave B and I can't get pure notes yet. My sax teacher has me jamming with it and it's great fun. The whole point of music is to enjoy what you play.

  • You've got soul man!

  • That was awesome you are and excellent tenor player. I just love this Gershwin piece. 5/5 from me.

  • 'S funny but I can hear you're far far better than the guy who critisized you, even though I've never heard that other guy play. Music's like that.

  • Awesome!

  • bah, I wouldn't worry about what other players say!

    You're awesome!

  • V. nice easy sound. Puts me in mind of Dave Brubeck's altoist and martini's!

  • Hey crazydoo, that's nice ! May I ask, what is the make/model# of the microphone ? I just bought a mic that looks very similar, I am curious if it is the same one. The fidelity on your's sounds good. Thanks ! And keep on posting videos like these !

  • great vid, who would of thought improvising could be so hard. you should have kept the comments i would have enjoyed them forget what idiots with too much time on their hands have to say

  • dude, this is a perfect solo, simple something that the listeners can relate to....i absolutely love it....you have given me so many good ideas.....i may have to steal a lick or two, but everyone will know where i got em from....keep up the good work and you have a wicked tone aswell.......

  • I hate it when haters who are musically challenged, or are jealous, or suck beat down on people who spend their lives refining their craft over the years. I hate it.

  • If I had a mike I'd do something like this

  • Loved your improvisation. Don't suppose you could direct me do a chord chart for this piece? Would be great if I could try playing along

  • To let you know, my uncle has played for years and teaches advanced students, he studied under Marcel M in Paris.

YOU are REALLY good. Don't let the trolls get you down. Any tips for my daughter, who is a first year player would be appreciated.

  • Get her to play for fun, without manuscript, even without a chord progression, just play notes and see if they make friends.

  • nice! after seeing a crappy solo on a previous video this really hit the spot!

  • great tone! very smooth. I'm still trying to find the right accessories for me as far as mouthpeice, reeds, lagatures and all that. I tried quite a few jazz mouthpeices but no winners :( looks like i'm stuck with my C* for the time being.... meh....

  • Hi Levoninthbox. I do state the melody, very often, but this is jazz my friend. You may be better off looking for a vocal version if you want the "original" melody. It gets pretty old very quickly on sax, and in this style. Check out my version on alto, perhaps easier to get to grips with.

  • I Just Started playing the alto Saxophone i hope i can play as good as you some day! I'm Gonna send this to my freind cause she play the Alto Sax too!

  • Thank you very much. I am honoured that you want to play along. I don't know much theory, I am an ear player, so you might have found an interesting experience....

  • haha

im really sorry, i do play Tenor sax myself-

And i've noticed im talking about ANOTHER Summertime.

Im sorry for my comment, remove it?

    Your an idol.

    Sorry about that

  • @Levoninthebox

Well, the backing track is definitely summertime and the title sais it's an improvisation. So, what's the problem?

  • I just played along on my tenor. Lovely swingy feel: you are a great player.

  • Where can I get some of the back beat tracks like this, man? I know Aebersold is one, but I haven't gotten any of those.

  • C´mon man... you are good enough to know that there are incredible jelous people there... Let me tell you something, you have an amazing TONE, and TONE is something you can´t teach... its unique for that person and maybe even better than horn stars. Im sure that your tone is way better than the abusive guy out there maybe with more years of experience and that make him envious... Everyone can teach something specially you... You sound great.

  • I agree man your great

  • I'm with them.. you're awesome! I enjoy listening to your jams... great tone!! Keep it up!!

  • what key is this in?

  • you have to find out for youself...

    it's an IMPPrrroov soloooh.

  • I think its in concert C major or D major for tenor or A major for alto

  • I think 3 flats - concert C minor

  • Forget the jealous complainer who could help others but won't. Few who play the sax will ever play as well as you and would be happy to reach your level. The true measure of a musician is what he gives back to the art.

I met many great musicians, personally, at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago, and one trait they all possesed was a willingness to explain anything they did on their instrument and a load of humility. Caring enough to help others travel the road is a sign of character.

  • lovely playing...very enjoyable and inspiring! I gather from the comments that this video used to be shown alongside some comments but these have been removed???? I'd love to see the annotations if you can get them back in there???

  • Hi This is Doc!..This is just wicked!!..Dont listen to anyone on YOUTUBE, you just advise all you want, and put the annotations back!..Ive been playin SAX 4 many years, then gave it away, and have just picked it up again in the last few weeks, as I am self taught. like all my other instruments, I welcome what your doing!!..Keep on Rockin Bro!...Just keep doin and advisin on what your doing!..Keep On Rockin!!..Doc J

  • Nice and laid back. I love it! I pull my tenor out every day and play Summertime with the back ground. Can't get enough of this tune. Thanks for posting

  • Matthew, please DO put the annotations back... It's been a great help for myself and others. The world's full of idiots and you know surely, that the best way to deal with them is to ignore them...

  • I'll 2nd that. There are a ton of twats on Youtube who appear to be vieing for the gringe of Xmas award. Ignore them and pity their sad lives. I find your tips and hints very helpfull. You explain things in a way that I can relate to.

  • Nice sound. You'll have to check out some of my sax playing once I get a video up! I play alto myself.

  • wow

  • I was so upset that I misspelled "video" .... twice :-)

  • I'm very dissapointed that you changed this vedio and vedio description!

I know they are wrong. There are people that try to make things personal, because then they can make it about "me,me,me". Unless you allow them, No one can make you feel less than a Saxophone Master!

Please continue to share your advice

  • Awesome.

  • very nice sound, man. what kinda sax and mouthpiece r u usin?

  • Thanks! a yanagisawa T901 and a otto link HR 7 with a 3 rico royal reed, all standard stuff.

  • @crazydaisydoo please , is it an HR Otto Link Tone Edge 7 ? Thanks

  • Hi - what a shame you received abusive comments. I found your annotations helpful and informative. Was disappinted to not see them there when I brought up your vid (again) tonight. As a recent convert to tenor from flute I find your posts an inspiration and often have a listen - love your tone! I (and lots of others) strive to be just a little bit as good as you. If people have nothing nice to say they shouldnt watch and should keep quiet!

  • Thanks Naynananano (thats a hard one to spell) the guy was an idiot, but maybe I should not be offering advice after such a short time of playing, best thing is the send me a message with any questions....

  • Your fresh approach is a very important insight for newcomers and advanced players. These are the tips that can form a new school of teaching! If not, how on earth have you reached the level you have in such a short time!

  • Hi there

So nice, so beatifull your just amazing.

You really can turn a bad day into a good one. Thanks for that..

I love ur sound and style, listen to you every day. Your my number 1, no doubt...

Ive bouht myself a clarinet, but do you know if the Sax is more difficult to play than a clarinet?

    kindly regards

    from Denmark

  • Great palying yet again Matt.

Thanks for sharing your tips, as others have said it really helps us 'wannabes' get away from the dots but still stay melodic.

Good luck with the big band, you lucky fella :-)

  • what microphone is that?

  • A rode NT2a, but a NT1a works just as well if you are on a budget. Superb mic for the money.

  • thx for lettin me know.

    =)

I wanted to get one for recording since my camera and webcam ain't really made for musical recording (the sound quality gets really bad if I play too loud, lol).

  • you might find the link at the end of this video useful. You cannot use "pro" mics with a computer without an interface. Or you can buy a usb mic, some are really good. Good luck!

  • oh ok. Thx!

  • Thank's for the comments.

I always listen to your music.

    You sound is great!

  • Mr. Stone,

The first time I heard you play, I knew you had super hero powers. When I read some of your responses, I knew that where kind and humble.

    and..........

When you opened the door to share your knowledge and advice, I could see a person of greatness.

All of your saxophone tips are greatly appreciated!

    Namaste

  • Thanks! Very kind words, but I am not great, just a bit of hard work on the guitar for 20 years, it pays off and transfers well to the sax... but I am still very much beginner, as I will find out again tonight when I take my regular spot with a big band, now that is hard!

  • thanks for the informative information matthew. it's always useful for us strugglers. btw is that a hal leonard play-along, as I couldn't find it in their list? keep up the wonderful work!

  • sorry, it is from faber, called authentic playalong. Very good book CD. Thanks for the kind words C&P

  • man great playing as always. thanks for using my video to Cannonball's version of "Love for Sale" Glad i could help you out with that annotation.

  • Thanks for posting your stuff, you are like a jazz evangelist! The good thing about putting music, especially older jazz, on youtube is it encourages legal purchase, because the sound quality on youtube is not great. I hope for that reason you get to keep it all on. It is like a public service!

  • its no problem really. i just like jazz and want to share the music on youtube. yeah, thats all true. thanks for listening to my stuff too.

  • This is brilliant and very helpful. Hope to see more of it.

  • Cheers. It was a useful exercise for me to work out what I was doing afterwards. I had to look up the minor blues scale, even though I have been using it for a while :-) I now understand it a little bit more

  • You're a fine performer as always, Matthew!

And for sure, you are an excellent teacher.

    Nicely done annotations.

    Best regards.

  • Cheers Bigman. The annotations are a little fast, but it shows how many things have to go through your head when soloing... it is a busy place up there!

  • I LOVE the reminders/instructions attached to each lovely phrase of one of my favorite jazz tunes to play on trpt (I tend to favor the '50's version by Maynard Ferguson, although I can only play most of the song down at least one octave). Your performance is downright startlingly beautiful - as usual, I might add! I'll be playing this repeatedly until it's downloaded into the brainpan for further use....

Thanks for posting a most tender jazz standard.

  • Thanks David, I wish I could play along to Maynard, even an octave lower :-) I tried some "outside" playing on this, as I tend to be very root orientated, I am glad you like.

  • Thanks, Matthew. I really value the stuff I've learned from your videos - more than you could ever imagine, I think. I have now got the ability to improvise on flute, and have gained mor'n an ocatave over the trumpet, which has set me free to follow your inspirational solos - as well as possible. I usually just play the melody on trpt and fool around w/trills/runs/grace notes the 2nd time around. I ain't no Maynard Jr down here in Mexico, although I hear that Doc Severinsen lives hereabouts.

  • What a clever and nice video! You would be a good teacher, Matthew. The speech bubbles and the cross references/links are very useful and effective. That's one of the things I like - there is almost always some kind of surprise when CDD has a new video!

  • Cheers Ulli, I get asked a lot about "what notes to play" and how to improvise, so I thought it might be a good idea. I am kind of worried that it might turn into people talking about dorian scales and the like..... not something that I know anything about...I am glad you still like the videos, they are fun to do.

  • Good idea.

And good sound too, of course...

  • You should not be watching this, you surely wrote the book on this kind of stuff :-) Thanks, from a great player!

  • hey I like saxohphones... I play tenor... any tips 4 me?

  • thanks.. this reminded me of starting out simple with a solo then slowly intensifying it

  • I am not sure that happened here:-) but thanks, I really have to remind myself of that principle, it is difficult especially as I now play a bit with a big band where you have 12 bars, sometimes less, and subtle solo building is a non-starter!

  • this is what the net is all about. you are sharing your talent with us and you are showing people how to improvise. you rock !!

  • Thanks dougri, not sure about the talent bit, just lots of listening, and thats easy...

  • you definitely have talent. i am no expert but i lived in nyc for twenty. i used to go to sweet basil and the blue note ALOT. you could hold your own at either place. long ago i even went to one show with a couple of guys who played with billie holiday. i love jazz !
