Seems to be OK for a game version that old (Isn't the rolling demo ver 1.xx ?)
You can go only so far with multiple cores since the game engine (as far as i know) is single threaded. So no matter the CPU core count, the core part of the game only uses one of 'em.
I'm managing with
a lousy 64-b Athlon X2@2200MHz,
GTX260TOP,
4Gb@800Mhz (Two matched DualCh Pairs)
on an M3N-HT Deluxe
1920x1200x32 all but textures maxed. Textures on Med for 300+ ship sectors. Gives me all the fps i need to dogfight.
@aliasdeCo Agree. I have a dual core laptop w 9800 gt 1 gb running at max on all areas and the game works lag free. The graphics are great, but the only thing this baby demands is critical thinking ie. trading.
Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to add, if you really want to see the difference in quality, I'd recommend running a saved game, several months advanced, on both an i7 and, say, a Core2 or the like, and seeing the reduction in stuttering bought about by the multiple cores :)
X3 is one of those few games, like Dwarf Fortress, where the playing experience really is quite closely related to the speed of your processing, especially once you have revealed a large number of sectors.
Gorgeous looking game though, and one of the few games you can really invest a lot of time into without losing interest :)
It's usually trying to control thousands of ships at once that effects the FPS on X3, the graphics rendering shouldn't change too much from initial speed in most cases,
I get 150+ FPS w/ E8400 @ 3.8Ghz w/ 4GB of Kingston ram @ just over 800mhz with default timings. Also, with a ATI Radeon 4890 and an Asus P5Q-E clocked at @ 430 FSB.....
Maybe your i7 rig is a little overkill...because I'm playing it @ highest settings AND 1360x768, I'm sure a higher resolution won't drop the FPS much.
You're right, it's not an even fight but you're system probably cost around £1000? Mine cost £550, custom built ofc...and I get double your FPS, not trying to be a dick. I fell in love with my processor and want to make sure people use it, the E8400 pwns more than people think!
@anythinggoesforthis tell how it is and where to get please i wanna custom build my comb rig and the only problem im having right now is the CPU coz they cost alot
@arvutihull Yes I agree. The reso affects. The 4870X2 has 2gb of graphics ram while the 4890 has only 1gb. When you push the reso up the framerate will drop.
very beautiful demo but as you can see even in this vid, there are some major stutterings in certain segments no matter how powerful your hardware is....82 fps at 1680x1080 GTX285 on my core 2 duo 3.33 gigahertz
I don't think so, as the stuttering is even on my system, no matter what res i play, i think its the demo itself...i thought it might have been my drivers but believe me i've tried nearly every combination!....it marrs an otherwise beautiful demo, perhaps it occurs as the scene transitions between a low polygon count and suddenly it goes to a very high polygon count, thats my explanation anyway :), thanks for the compliment but your fps are higher! lol
Probably yes, I was running Catalyst 9.2 in this video. Your resolution was higher too, probably you got less FPS because you ran it on 1920x1200, i ran it on 1680x1050.
920 is cheaper, 940 is more expensive. 920 has 2,67GHz stock clock speed, 940 has 2,93GHz. 920 can overclock bad (depends on how good chip you'll get), 940 will overclock good.
I didn't call the 920 a bad overclocker (I'm running mine at 4,1GHz at the moment). If you buy a 920 It can be a very good overclocker, but if you get a bad chip then it will need a lot voltage to reach 4GHz.
Do you ever get lag, like it pausing for a second or 2 every few mins?
tom432011 2 months ago
@tom432011 - Yes, I got some slight lag before every part of the benchmark.

@Oatmeal1300 there must be something wrong with your drivers, i have that exact system but with a gts450 and runs at average 40fps at ultra

Ohh well... its so bad that X3 doesnt assist more than 1 Core ._.

Despite it's age, Terran Conflict (X3 in general) is absolutely amazing looking.
A brilliant game.

@Oatmeal1300
0. What resolution are u running it on?
1. Check your drivers. Make sure you get those from ATI and not from Microsoft Windows Update.
2. Check your power supply. Is your board underpowered?
3. Check your temps. Is your board/graphics, etc. heating till too high a temp?
I'm running on an Intel C2Q Q9550, 4gb ddr2 and ATI HD4850 512MB and the game is very smooth for me. 5850 shouldn't be a problem.

Superb choice of music. JMJ's music is just the perfect soundtrack to any space based game. Especially oxygen.

The amount of games that run better with AA off is annoying me. why even have it? quite high end systems strugle with it on..i dont get it ????

1360x768 = 1044480 pixels
1680x1050 = 1764000 pixels
There actually is a pretty big difference in the resolution ;-)
But 4890 may do better in this benchmark also... i'm not sure that the benchmark supports crossfire, probably not...

I would hardly call the i7 920 a bad overclocker.
MANY people reach 4.0ghz with it.

I didn't call the 920 a bad overclocker (I'm running mine at 4,1GHz at the moment). If you buy a 920 It can be a very good overclocker, but if you get a bad chip then it will need a lot voltage to reach 4GHz.
