Whilst I must agree that Candide is not so good as Zadig -- which is still yet not so grand as Micromegas (still yet a small piece when next to Notes of Philosphy) -- Candide made me laugh much more, and much more heartily as well!
@resendess With Voltaire I think it might depend on which you read first, I read Candide first and compared it to everthing else I read of his work and all the while thought "it's good but it's not Candide".
I am not sure I am willing to subscribe to the notion that "plump" is desirable these days.

'And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.' (Romans 8:28)
'For those God foreknew he also predestined to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn of many brothers'. (Romans8:29)

"Whites are superior to negroes, just as negroes are to apes, and apes to oysters" -- Traité de métaphysique, 1734

without negroes there would be no whites, no orientals, no hispanics, and no middle easterners. africa is the mother land of the human species.

It can also be said that without homininae there'd be no" whites, no orientals, no hispanics, and no middle easterners" and no negroes either.
Are we not more progressed than homininae?(the common ancestor between apes and humans),if so your point is rendered null by extension of logic.
No harsh feelings on my part.

Without doubt Voltaires magnus opus.
I just read it for the third time, i love the rollercoaster of events Candide goes through, the people he meets, etc.
My friends can't understand why i don't read NME magazine, or some other popular culture script, hahaha. Im 17.
