SON-OF-GUN; JUST MADE IT!!! In 1960 "You Got What It Takes' peaked at No. 10 thus just making the Top 10, it also stayed in the Top 100 for nearly a half a year (22 weeks}...
Mr. Johnson was the 1st artist to release a record on Berry Gordy's Tamla label in May 1959, it was titled "Come To Me" but it didn't make the Top 100 until it was released on the United Artist label
One of Frantic Ernie Durham's fav WJBK in Detroit. It was a major song at Neinas Jr. High in Detroit just off Vernor, back in the day. Moppsy Davis Bangor, Maine
I was 14 when I first heard this (in late 1959) and in the midst of my first "romance". So I always think of Karen when I hear it...and I thought she DID look like a movie star and DID dress with the best of taste! Plus....Great song to dance to!
Can someone explain to me why this song is so offensive? It sounds like he's singing about how a girl doesn't need to be pretty or rich for him to like her. That sounds very sweet to me. Today, songs are all about women being worth as much as they are on the outside; being reduced to sex objects. Am I missing something here? Why would this be banned?
Im knocking on abit now but me and my missus were both ok in the looks dept and when we danced to it sang it to each other.Maybe we were too innocent and just liked the beat and the singing
Most people do not realize that Marv Johnson was, in reality, the first Motown artist. His records were produced by Berry Gordy and written by many of the people who became part of the Motown empire just a few years later.
I'm not surprised the evil white woman has took this song the wrong way because of the color of this mans skin. That's crazy hicks on Youtube for you.
Of course, that was my point exactly. In 1959, most women may have put up with being treated as a lower & less attractive species, but times have changed. I believe in free speech, so I wouldn't ban any record. You're wrong about that. It was only an observation.
These lyrics are an example of the horrible chauvinism going on during this time period. No woman anywhere- should ever have to put up with being talked to that way...not even a hideous one! In most cases, the psychological analysis of men who use this terminology is that they believe they can keep a woman, only if they lower her self esteem enough, to the point where she thinks she can't do better than them. The man is generally uglier than the woman he talks this way to. It is his own low ego.

I'm from the old school. I love this song. But if he was to make this song with these lyrics today, a lot of women wouldn't like it.
