The NEW Regal should come with a twin turbo V6 (350-400 horses), all wheel drive, and be murdered out (All black, for you non-car nuts) and BOOM you got yourself a new GN. Whaddya say?
between the buick grand nationals and the gmc syclones and typhoons, they were pretty bad ass v6 motors, the 3.8 and 4.3. not many stock cars or trucks could win against them in a drag race. still dont believe theres a quicker production truck than the syclone
They should have threw Opel Insignia OPC V6 Turbo in the game, because the 2.0 4Cylinder was never meant for performance, but as usually what the European Cars are ending there like is with shitty Gearboxes, shitty brakes, everything downgraded and the base version branded as "Performance".
Can't say anything bout the 2011 regal, but as far as an 87 GN, it is not that slow...my dad and I have a GN and took it to the track wen we first got it. It was bonestock and we spun 20 yr old gatorbacks all the way thru the end of 2nd gear and still ran a 14.2 at 95 mph...if it had good tires, the GN will take a 1/4 in 13.7-13.8 not 14.2-14.3
A turbo car that runs 16's? Im gonna run right out and fuck myself by buying one. They aughtta call it the worlds slowest production turbo coupe which Im sure in fact it is.
@tbirdsport302 The 97-04's would crush this new turd... My old 97 Regal GS ran 14.4's @98mph stock... this is so Sad. This is a great looking New Buick that even in GS trim with a Turbo and 6spd Manual can't beat a new automatic V6 "Sebring" (200) in the 1/4.... dafuq is GM doing.
@DruidB19 I totally agree with you :) I would like to see it against the older Grand National though...close race yet....I'm afraid without a tune and pulley..the 97-04 would lose, but idk, itd be real close, but thats a good thing :)
The GN runs 13.90's @ 101+ and the only test I've seen of the new CXL was a 15.70 @ 92.10 *Not fast, but definitely not running in the 16's either. The CXL did 0-60 in 7.4 too... Not 8.0 with roll out or 8.3 w/o like this test.
@IrishChris1979 This version of the new TR is on par with the 1984-1985 Hot-Air TR's. They weren't that fast, but could wake up with some mods. The new GS model should be closer to the 1986-1987 TR's. It will be interesting if there is an "X"-option in the future with a larger Turbo 4 or a Turbo 3.6 v6. Lets see what happens!
It doesnt take but 3000 in suspension.+ rearend yo make the gbody handle. People dont forget, there are TONS of parts gor these cars from the Nascar days!
Thr Corvette will b the fastest GM car for the foreseeable future. There will never be a grand national car comparable to the 1st gen. The GN didnt have significantly less power than the GNX... The GNX was just rated closer to the true power those LC2's actually made. Think the c4 corvettes at the time were rated 25hp more and weighed 300lbs less than the Standard GN but would still get walked by a GN by a full second. hey I own a 1984 see my vid, i do like the new ones but let me say if youre expecting classic muscle, then a Camaro Mustang or Challengers for you the new Regal is well more like a cadillac than anything else (i know theyre same company).
@biscuitninja Yip. My shitty 2000 Ford Focus manual with a measly 130 hp does 0-60 in 9 seconds. Manual of coarse. And it's a shit box. The fact that it's only a second slower than that turbo regal really puts that regal into perspective. :P
Well thank God SOMEBODY finally settled this raging debate...I mean I personally wasn't sure if the GN was going to win. Now I can sleep soundly again
man i love my 93 LT1 firebird formula. it's 18 yrs old 121,000mi has I/E CHIP 160 STAT and with 3.73's out back still hitting 13.80 passes. i'm 54 and do keep it running like when i picked it up at the dealer. been told over the yrs to hook up a 125 shot and go low13 or break into the 12's,but happy with it the way it is.alot of older muscle can still hang or beat newer muscle.
Fair - Turbo against Turbo & old tech won LOL. Some of it may be -- the 87 has a Buick engine, the 2011 a 'corporate' engine (i.e. Chevy :-(. And 14.3 is a bad time for 87s, high 13s would be more normal. And I know for a fact, they taught me in GM school that the 87 was SEVERELY detuned, I'm sure the 2011 is not. Take out that $40 detuned chip and you'll run low 13s easy. GM detuned it because the brass didn't want it beating a Vette too bad (again they told me this in school).
would have gone a lot smoother if he would have had time to spool up the turbo before he left the line, looks like he was going too but the 2011 jumped the gun.. 14.3 sec for a GN is not acceptable haha
A real race to compare would be the 87 Buick Regal Grand National and the 2003 Buick Regal GS. Most people would be surprised at the outcome. I own a 2000 Buick Regal and I absolutely love it, I have beaten quite a few stock "muscle cars".
yeah these 2 cars arent good to compare... now a corevette maybe. but the new 4 cylinder.. not a chance.. i have a STOCK buick regal t-type '86... its beast... by the way guys, the GN and Regal t-type are same powertrain... just GN has all the decals, and fancy seats. and i highly doubt a saturn could be these cars fish bone lol.
GM wanted 35 year olds to get the new regal. To me, a WRX would be a better option for a cool 4-door in that age group, or even better, a CTS. Buick today is entry level luxury. A Lexus. "I love my interior and and fluid bodylines" kind of car. A GNX is black like a pistol, with Minimal hints at performance. Its 4 menacing, sharp, yet soul-less eyes and the turn signal below will be glaring forwards, concentrated.
The two cars have nothing in common. The GNX is Darth Vader on wheels. The new regal still looks like a grandpa car. There's no way the GNX will ever come back. The Angle that the back window makes with the trunk isn't available grometry on any current cars, except the CTS. The front proportions of a CTS won't support the GNX styling. The GNX is gone people. At least it went out being a sinister piece of awesome.
I remember my friend's dad had one of those as an FBI pursuit car. GM Chairman Roger B. Smith put the axe to the buick Grand National for no other reason than the premier sports car for General Motors had to be the Chevrolet Corvette. The Buick GN was kickin' the shit out of the Corvette and that had to stop ugh!
I own both versions of these cars and I love them both for different reasons. The GN because of the speed and the 2011 because it is just a great and fun car to drive.
They wasn't trying to make the GN again they are aiming for the 25 to 35 year old market for a good family car with decent power. Of coarse my GN will beat it in a drag race but the 2011 will beat it on a road course.
Here's an idea for GM pull the Pontiac G8 platform out of the mothballs and build a new Buick Grand National on it. Use the same formula at the 87, I mean don't use another version of the Corvette V8. Use a modded version of the new 3.6 V6 like is found in the Camaro and Cadillac models.
still would take the gn and I don't think it needs sticky tires to beat the cxi rear wheel drive to me is the best. and the gs ,if it did beat the grand national it wouldn't change my mind. I have see proud owners of grand nationals who kept there cars running and keeping them dependable stock or not still whooping as on the road and dont have to spend the price of a new car to do so long live the grand national.
I've honestly never seen a GN whooped by anything, EVER. And I've mostly never understood that except to say that the turbocharging of that car helped to produce the power so much faster than in other cars with comparable or even higher HP. But against the new Regal Turbo? Um yeah, was there any question that the GN would outrun it? The GN, heavy as it was, has (unofficially) 276 HP (even though rated at 200) and tons of torque. The new regal has 220 HP and little torque. Why bother with this?
I watch this video everyday (from my favorites list) and it never gets old. And one of the things it always reminds me of is, "there's no replacement for displacement"
@Tamadrummer1981 It's sad more than funny. I have the new Regal Turbo, and I love it, and it's quick, but I can' believe Buick's attempt to make this a quick and sporty car only made a mediocre attempt at doing so. It's almost like we're back to the mid 70's, and early to late '80's when horsepower was downgraded in order to keep emissions the key to building good cars.
@1mlb704 ahahah! i live in the planet earth and you? american cars? The regal is too heavy and the automatic gearbox is shit! The manual is better! The rims are 19 inch! in the magazine autozeitung.de the opel insignia 2.0 turbo does 7.1 sec 0-100kmh! Better than is concorrents Bmw,Volvo, Ford...only audi was faster!
German cars are the best and the italians the most beautiful. Some british too. American cars? boxes with wheels? you Americans unknow the meaning of perfection and beauty
@wologand 7.1 seconds... great. The all American Grand National does it in 5.5 seconds... and it's from 1987! I'm American and I like the tradition, character, drivability and reliability of many American cars. Truth is these days, everybody makes great cars (some better than others in certain categories). The Americans and Europeans have owned the auto industry for a long time, and now cars from Asia are turning heads. Think what you want you're entitled to your opinion.
@1mlb704 friend! no compares the Opel Insignia bad that the car beside you. Remember: For 70 years General Motors was the largest automobile group in the world! Today it's Toyota! vokswagen in 2017 will be a European brand. Despite belonging to GM's Opel are completely designed in Europe and the European refinad taste! Again, do not go comparing these two cars! Shame on the idiot that made this video
Its a damn disgrace. Buick was always known to have some stealth runners in their stable. The Century and Roadmaster in the 50's, Wildcat, GS 400 and Riviera GS in the 60's, GS Stage 1 in the 70's and Grand National and T Types in the 80's. Its a shame that they are trying to pass this piece of shit slug Regal off as a performance car. Current management is stale and out of touch with the present market and Buick's legacy.
@Motorfordtoyota mourron, the insignia have a little engine but if that car has a manual gearbox the things change! Make a race in a circuit...american cars do not bend...americans only think in power never in effectiveness. The road have corners remember...
there will never be another buick that will be as atrocious as the grand national... especially not this 2011 regal turbo...i mean come on...the new one looks more luxurious and isnt it a 4cyl? This car is a terrible move by buick...sad to say
If he would have built up boost and launched that GN he would have gone to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds and ran the 1/4 in the mid 13's that's if the car hooked up and he didn't smoke the tires. You can't race a turbo car doing roll outs and get accurate numbers there's turbo lag the car needs to build boost.
Buick lost it's edge after the grand national. Now it just concentrates on the geriatric market. Bring back the grand national to compete with challenger and camaro and you might have a winner.
@leebog31 the problem with that is, GM has their babies...the pilot car: the Corvette, and the pony car: the Camaro. They wont make another car within the company to compete with what they already have. This is really why the grand national was cut in the first place, they realized this turbo V6 was devastating what was supposed to be their super car i.e. the Corvette, and they simply couldnt let that happen. This could be a reason Pontiac was cut from the lineup as well
@leebog31 But Pontiac's ultimate demise was the fact that the engines happened to be designed and built not by GM but by Buick itself. So cutting Buick wasn't an option because that would've resulted in the cutting of both Pontiac and Buick
@leebog31 In fact about 6 months before I was born, my dad almost got a Grand National from the dealer but the asshloe lied and said it had a salvage title. The thing was already bought by a Texan but he let my dad drive it anyway. Doushe, not you, him...
@leebog31 now that would be something........Just think how much money Buick would make selling a new type of Grand National. V8 Turbo push rod.....I'd buy one tomorrow.
I will agree with wideopen704 on this one, this is the best video inside line gets but I will say straight up inside line always gets lower numbers than everyone else. Cars always seem slower here on inside line then how they really are, like if a car ran 11 anywhere else it would get 12 or 13 here for somer reason.
@zerooneonefive honestly, thats not a bad thing. The problem with say, motortrend is, they may say a car like the new V6 mustang for instance will run 13.7 stock. Inside line did a test on the same car and ran low 14's with it. Now im not saying they cant run 13.7's, but i have a car that runs 13.7's and ive beat a new V6 stang from a stop and a roll by a couple cars. Not to mention ive seen many other cars at a track that cant run the numbers that motortrend/ car and driver claim.
@pontiacfreak142 I mean I will say motortrend does get good reviews overall and I like watching their videos but I guess it isn't really a bad thing afterall since some numbers are claims till they are actually put on a track
Aside from the joking for this video, these are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT types of cars. The GN is an American muscle car while the 2011 Regal is a family sedan.
@mrblood32 actually the grand national is a turbocharged v6. It could have been a V8 due to the energy crisis of the 80s they couldn't design a big block to go inside the national at the time of production. That new regal is a joke
It seems like some of you guys are taking the video way too seriously. It's meant to be somewhat of a joke.
I looked through all 152 comments and literally *no one* has pointed out that we're comparing a V8 to a fuel-efficient 4-cylinder. Comparing the Grand National to something like a Chrysler 300 SRT8 would be a much more fair comparison.
GN would have broke into the 13's if he would have boost braked a bit. Also another thing that I think there is a lot of misconception over, while the GNX has a slight advantage power wise over a standard GN, the difference is negligible. Maybe 2 tenths of a second difference. The biggest differences are in the suspension, I.E. plants the power a little better.
hahaha wow! thats pretty sad actually. besides the new car most likely being safer its much slower than the same 30 year old car! they should know they are doing something wrong!
I have some experience with Grand Nationals but this is hardly a fair comparison. Both vehicles deserve the Buick faceplates. The new cars are built well and are about as forward in design as anything being built right now by an American manufacturer. The newbie Regal ain't a GN for sure but it's a sharp looking car and a decent alternative to anything Euro or Japanese in its price class.
The NEW Regal should come with a twin turbo V6 (350-400 horses), all wheel drive, and be murdered out (All black, for you non-car nuts) and BOOM you got yourself a new GN. Whaddya say?

man i love my 93 LT1 firebird formula. it's 18 yrs old 121,000mi has I/E CHIP 160 STAT and with 3.73's out back still hitting 13.80 passes. i'm 54 and do keep it running like when i picked it up at the dealer. been told over the yrs to hook up a 125 shot and go low13 or break into the 12's,but happy with it the way it is.alot of older muscle can still hang or beat newer muscle.

Its 4 menacing, sharp, yet soul-less eyes and the turn signal below will be glaring forwards, concentrated.
mikeb1444 9 months ago
The two cars have nothing in common. The GNX is Darth Vader on wheels. The new regal still looks like a grandpa car. There's no way the GNX will ever come back. The Angle that the back window makes with the trunk isn't available grometry on any current cars, except the CTS. The front proportions of a CTS won't support the GNX styling. The GNX is gone people. At least it went out being a sinister piece of awesome.
mikeb1444 9 months ago
I remember my friend's dad had one of those as an FBI pursuit car. GM Chairman Roger B. Smith put the axe to the buick Grand National for no other reason than the premier sports car for General Motors had to be the Chevrolet Corvette. The Buick GN was kickin' the shit out of the Corvette and that had to stop ugh!
Presspunk1 9 months ago
I own both versions of these cars and I love them both for different reasons. The GN because of the speed and the 2011 because it is just a great and fun car to drive.
They wasn't trying to make the GN again they are aiming for the 25 to 35 year old market for a good family car with decent power. Of coarse my GN will beat it in a drag race but the 2011 will beat it on a road course.

Chinunit22 9 months ago
Here's an idea for GM pull the Pontiac G8 platform out of the mothballs and build a new Buick Grand National on it. Use the same formula at the 87, I mean don't use another version of the Corvette V8. Use a modded version of the new 3.6 V6 like is found in the Camaro and Cadillac models.
StuinthaHouse 9 months ago
wow why are we comparing these 2 cars? gn =cool new regal turbo=not so much
the gn's were made to go fast, 2011 regal turbo, fuel economy.
mkraemer2008 9 months ago
still would take the gn and I don't think it needs sticky tires to beat the cxi rear wheel drive to me is the best. and the gs ,if it did beat the grand national it wouldn't change my mind. I have see proud owners of grand nationals who kept there cars running and keeping them dependable stock or not still whooping as on the road and dont have to spend the price of a new car to do so long live the grand national.
600turbine 9 months ago
either the cxl's tires aren't sticky, or the driver was doggin it. at 90 mph he should have run ONE SECOND quicker!
where's the skidpad? slalom? track test? noise levels? fit and finish? stereo and sat nav? lift and drag figures?
it's cute that you compared the gn to the cxl...wait for the GS! it'll eat the gn's lunch in a straight line too!
cstavro 9 months ago
I knew that grand national was going to be that cxl, this goes to show how much gm messed up when they stopped making a true car.
600turbine 10 months ago
I've honestly never seen a GN whooped by anything, EVER. And I've mostly never understood that except to say that the turbocharging of that car helped to produce the power so much faster than in other cars with comparable or even higher HP. But against the new Regal Turbo? Um yeah, was there any question that the GN would outrun it? The GN, heavy as it was, has (unofficially) 276 HP (even though rated at 200) and tons of torque. The new regal has 220 HP and little torque. Why bother with this?
socalguy97 10 months ago
I watch this video everyday (from my favorites list) and it never gets old. And one of the things it always reminds me of is, "there's no replacement for displacement"
Grand National all day!!
adogg619 10 months ago
It's funny, the new Regal turbo runs only .4 seconds quicker and 3 mph faster through the traps than my 2003 Chevy Malibu LS with the old 3.1 V6.
Tamadrummer1981 10 months ago
@Tamadrummer1981 It's sad more than funny. I have the new Regal Turbo, and I love it, and it's quick, but I can' believe Buick's attempt to make this a quick and sporty car only made a mediocre attempt at doing so. It's almost like we're back to the mid 70's, and early to late '80's when horsepower was downgraded in order to keep emissions the key to building good cars.
socalguy97 10 months ago

Just goes to show, Americans have always built better cars than Germans :P haha
1mlb704 10 months ago
@1mlb704 ahahah! i live in the planet earth and you? american cars? The regal is too heavy and the automatic gearbox is shit! The manual is better! The rims are 19 inch! in the magazine autozeitung.de the opel insignia 2.0 turbo does 7.1 sec 0-100kmh! Better than is concorrents Bmw,Volvo, Ford...only audi was faster!
German cars are the best and the italians the most beautiful. Some british too. American cars? boxes with wheels? you Americans unknow the meaning of perfection and beauty
wologand 10 months ago
@wologand 7.1 seconds... great. The all American Grand National does it in 5.5 seconds... and it's from 1987! I'm American and I like the tradition, character, drivability and reliability of many American cars. Truth is these days, everybody makes great cars (some better than others in certain categories). The Americans and Europeans have owned the auto industry for a long time, and now cars from Asia are turning heads. Think what you want you're entitled to your opinion.
1mlb704 10 months ago

Current management is stale and out of touch with the present market and Buick's legacy.

alexeddy79 11 months ago
If he would have built up boost and launched that GN he would have gone to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds and ran the 1/4 in the mid 13's that's if the car hooked up and he didn't smoke the tires. You can't race a turbo car doing roll outs and get accurate numbers there's turbo lag the car needs to build boost.
spikestta 11 months ago
Buick lost it's edge after the grand national. Now it just concentrates on the geriatric market. Bring back the grand national to compete with challenger and camaro and you might have a winner.
leebog31 11 months ago 23
@leebog31 why wood GM wanna compete with another GM car(camero)
lol
bigdoo350 7 months ago
@leebog31 Lol The Grand National was great, yes, but what they need to bring back is the 1970 GSX. It smoked even the GNs.
margolo 7 months ago
@leebog31 the problem with that is, GM has their babies...the pilot car: the Corvette, and the pony car: the Camaro. They wont make another car within the company to compete with what they already have. This is really why the grand national was cut in the first place, they realized this turbo V6 was devastating what was supposed to be their super car i.e. the Corvette, and they simply couldnt let that happen. This could be a reason Pontiac was cut from the lineup as well
jaybeiler 7 months ago
@jaybeiler agree
Naturalhit 7 months ago
@leebog31 But Pontiac's ultimate demise was the fact that the engines happened to be designed and built not by GM but by Buick itself. So cutting Buick wasn't an option because that would've resulted in the cutting of both Pontiac and Buick
jaybeiler 7 months ago
@leebog31 Yeah, when I hear "Buick I think of the Grand National, GNX and Regal -'80s-

@leebog31 In fact about 6 months before I was born, my dad almost got a Grand National from the dealer but the asshloe lied and said it had a salvage title. The thing was already bought by a Texan but he let my dad drive it anyway. Doushe, not you, him...

god1of1guns1 6 months ago
I will agree with wideopen704 on this one, this is the best video inside line gets but I will say straight up inside line always gets lower numbers than everyone else. Cars always seem slower here on inside line then how they really are, like if a car ran 11 anywhere else it would get 12 or 13 here for somer reason.
zerooneonefive 11 months ago
@zerooneonefive honestly, thats not a bad thing. The problem with say, motortrend is, they may say a car like the new V6 mustang for instance will run 13.7 stock. Inside line did a test on the same car and ran low 14's with it. Now im not saying they cant run 13.7's, but i have a car that runs 13.7's and ive beat a new V6 stang from a stop and a roll by a couple cars. Not to mention ive seen many other cars at a track that cant run the numbers that motortrend/ car and driver claim.
pontiacfreak142 11 months ago
@pontiacfreak142 I mean I will say motortrend does get good reviews overall and I like watching their videos but I guess it isn't really a bad thing afterall since some numbers are claims till they are actually put on a track
zerooneonefive 11 months ago
@pontiacfreak142 u have to remember motortrend is always taking in mind weather/climate conditions, ur not.

Aside from the joking for this video, these are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT types of cars. The GN is an American muscle car while the 2011 Regal is a family sedan.
grado1000 1 year ago
@mrblood32 actually the grand national is a turbocharged v6. It could have been a V8 due to the energy crisis of the 80s they couldn't design a big block to go inside the national at the time of production. That new regal is a joke
mmadrummer64 1 year ago
It seems like some of you guys are taking the video way too seriously. It's meant to be somewhat of a joke.
I looked through all 152 comments and literally *no one* has pointed out that we're comparing a V8 to a fuel-efficient 4-cylinder. Comparing the Grand National to something like a Chrysler 300 SRT8 would be a much more fair comparison.
MrBloody32 1 year ago
@MrBloody32

Sweet video! We had a bone stock down to the filter 87 GN go 14.07 in the quarter!
79TAKid 1 year ago
GN would have broke into the 13's if he would have boost braked a bit. Also another thing that I think there is a lot of misconception over, while the GNX has a slight advantage power wise over a standard GN, the difference is negligible. Maybe 2 tenths of a second difference. The biggest differences are in the suspension, I.E. plants the power a little better.
