Thanks for some good comments to you recent peeps. Midinerd has basically got the idea, to think of it more as pitch-shifting. The control signal from the movement of the vinyl is used to speed up or slow down my voice, whether it's moved forwards or backwards the effect on my voice is basically the same. I would try to speak my syllables backwards to get a back-scratch effect. Eastwood1 is also correct, I have pretty much abandoned the project, best wishes for continuing the work my friend!
if anyone wants to test my voice scratching software email me for a beta version. Please be aware that i have emailed dj Fractal Brocholli and he has abandoned this project. all MaxMSP programmers should continue where he left off!
yeah dude... they would probably rather assume it isn't as cool as it really is. Your friend had a great idea, totally fooled me! And yes, I believe that you guys really did build the package.
excellent job scratching by the way! pretty seamless with the software
i was hating at first , but i can really appreciate this software.if you dont have a patent you should'nt even have this up here, mad people will steal your idea man.
damn, people are posting some harsh comments. being a fellow max user myself i really appreciate what you're doing here. unbelievable potential. don't let the ignorant get you down, do you.
Hey Ruralist, where could I obtain the software you're using? I assume it's a PD patch or possibly Max/MSP ? I see you're using Pinky Vinyl..good stuff...let me know where I can get your patch :)
after 8 months of experimenting, i have finally figued out how to do this myself. however the method im using requires me to record a phrase into a buffer and play from the buffer at the same time. so it is therefore impossible to speed up a sample as it is being recorded because that would be scratching a voice in another time dimension.
Word, I would've felt the same way - that you cannot proceed ahead of time that hasn't been recorded yet. I think this is something specific about the way scratching a human voice sounds, though. it's pitch-shifting and not wavetable scanning.
As soon as the first word enters the microphone, that word is on the record (digitally) and ready to be manipulated by hand. The Mic recording continues regardless of the record movement. Now if the record is going forward at regular speed the playback point will never reach the recording point. However speeding up the record by hand will quickly move the playback point beyond the present and into the future (voice has not been recorded yet). so it is impossible to scratch a live sound source
Absolute fucking choice, its just not a good sound dude, i was ashamed for you, and where is all that distortion coming from? please please please i beg you, step away from the decks and never go near a pair again
Are you freekin kiddin me? Dude you need to get out more...are you like on a house arrest or something?
White walls, white tee shirt all that you need now is a straight jacket....at mark 1:10 are you having sex with the freekin mixer? Holy crap this is stupid.
... Shits wack son !! .. It could fit into the techno/raver crowd ... It's in the same class of gayness as the ravers with glowsticks up their shit shoot and glitter on their faces .. Throw that shit away and stick to straight cuttin or get a box of razorblades & bottle of cranberry juice .. Either one is coo by me.
Man thats some creative shit you got going on there. Gotta love what Max/MSP and Ms Pinky are capable of. I think some people on here don't comprehend the complexity of your performance, even after reading your description.
Dang, this place is lousy with haters. This guy is a DJ demoing a brilliant piece of technology, not a performer, so why hold him up to that standard? I'm sure if I go check out all the haters' profiles, they will have all kinds of innovative and creative stuff up there to back up their negative comments, right?
This is pretty good - finally a way to capture what an MC says and abuse it!! :P Would be useful for demo purposes if you removed the mic at one point, or to capture other noises than the voice...

Forget about haters they couldn't see the potential inside your skill forms (learning is a process to become not the start)
I'm very interested on your patch and approarch and how to do it more useful.
Peace

the fun is in the prick with the mad skillz rather than the kit itself. the only thing thats missing is a gimp suit and scratching with a strap on.

kool video and great skillz.. but i dont see where you scratch your own voice, seems like your beatboxing and scratchin some other track
mrnuffniceness 3 years ago
he isn't actually scratching a track, but it is modulating the input live. I agree though, it's hard to tell with a voice.
