Not being a critic at all I loved the lick and the time you took to make sure that even guitarists in the early stages can pick it up. It's about helping. I will use this with a couple other licks I have..I liked it! Thanks!
Hey what's up Will Billy Two Fist McGee.. I like the lick, might use it in a song. I'll make it my own of course, but I think there is potential in it. Nice name!
dude im learnin the major scale nw. i know the blues scale . Learnin of scales has made learnin ur lessons easier. But i dont know where exactly to go frm there. i can recognize the single notes but when it comes to chords im all out. Could u giv me som guidance or direction. Plzzzzzzzzzzz
PRS guitars are just fine dude, the raspiness comes from having the tone at max without any chorus, wah, reverb or anything else to soften it. I have a les paul custom and a PRS anniversary right in front of me, and if you set up the les paul that way it's scratchy too. Try one out and tell me I'm wrong. (However, PRS are way too expensive, but it's all about the prestige. Same with Gibson. Ibanezs and schecters are just as sweet, so are fenders.)
It sounds like someone scraping their nails on a blackboard; not a very please sound to the ear.
I'm still PISSED that Rush's Alex Lifeson gave up Gibson for a good number of years and switched to PRS. When I listen back to those songs he used the PRS on, I get upset because I know they would have been INCREDIBLE on a Gibson. He and Gibson were MADE 4 each other! PRS has NEVER sounded good (to me).
This guy has possibly the biggest mouth i ever seen. The whole time i was watching this vid i was waiting for spit to shoot out of his mouth and hit the camera lens.
Cool scale, but when you showed the fingering of it the first time your last note was on the 13th fret of the high E and you said it was on the 14th. Just a little slip there, but apart from that, another fine lesson. Rock on Man!
We talked briefly about the Dorian scale in class but I knew nothing about it up to now. Now that you've demontrated it, I can now say I know what it looks and sounds like. Thanks again. I'm adding this to my playlist. Peace & blessings. Your playing is awesome!
can some one please help me? i want to know what shords i can play the modes over, like what is an example of a chord progression to play A aeolian over? and how can i recognize which mode to play besides what key its in
You need to know the key you're in, I'm afraid. For example, if you see a guy banging out B5, F#5, C#5, and G#5 (basic 4th progressions), you NEED to know the guy is in either A major or F#min cause of the 3 sharps he's given you. And then you can play your basic A Ionian or F# Aeolian or some other mode like B Dorian (anything within the Amaj scale).
I'm not sure if I make any sense, but you NEED to know what chords are laid out, hence knowing the key, and then your application of modes.
but is the only way to know what to play over it knowing what key its in? and basically what i got from u is that you find what key that progression is in, you play some scale consisting of the major scale of the key from that progression, and basically just find what sounds good over it. also, couldnt you play a dorian over an a major progression, even though that progression is not in G major? (just as an example)
Sadly you need to know your keys, and you need to know what chords are played. If you're playing with another dude, just look at where his hands go to figure out what chord he's playing. If it's from a CD or something, figure out the chords first, THEN start improvising.
And yes, you can play a B Dorian in A major, but its highly unlikely that any other Dorian mode will fit in Amaj. And for the dude who thumbed me down, what gives? If you disagree with me, tell me what you think.
@leoseanster now this is technically true, however also try substatuting any natural minor scale with a minor mode, such as phyrigan and dorian, if you dont stay on the altered tones you can get the dorain and phyrigan sound but not any dissonant notes, try F# dorian and F# Phygian
@Phailure365 Yes, definitely not saying that you are wrong, and it does depend on what kind of a flavour you are going for. But, diatonically speaking, where you want every note to 'fit', you need to know the key. Now all these jazz cats will tell you different, e.g. play C7 and omg use C dorian plz...but the concept I'm referring to is that of completely staying within a given key...but yes, you are correct nonetheless.
@leoseanster most quotable part of your comment "when your playing another dude look where his hands go ... "you sir are a legend and you dont even know it :P
@leoseanster Well, it needn't be, in any case the resulting sound would be that of a 6th or a dom7 chord. Wwell, I guess there are several ways you can think of it. If you leave it just as a basic major chord you can switch between different scales and produce interesting sounds.
@Sivels Yeah I realised that it solely depends on the kind of texture you want to put out of the instrument. But I personally cannot stand dissonance, so I'd only dish out a dorian when over said chords. I never ever lay out an 'exotic' mode on a regular change, it just sounds...iffy to me.
Quick way to find the chord ...slide up or down any string until you hit the fundamental note, and the note you stop on is the name of the chord you are listening to.
Usually a song starts with the fundamental chord...the key chord as the first chord in the song.
Easiest way to find is slide up or down the E bass or hi E and remember the chromatic scale to find the key the song is in.
