I saw the 1984 MTV video awards and not counting Belinda and Kathy, this show had more s--t on stage than an elephant on Ex-Lax. It jumped the shark when Roger Daltrey smashed a guitar, not to mention Madonna's sexually laced performance of "Like A Virgin". Weeks later, due to parental complaints, (mostly with the awads show)MTV was taken off our cable system and replaced by The Nashville Network, although around 1993, it was brought back. The best MTV awards show-1989, with Andrew Dice Clay.
Fortunately, Belinda and Charlotte Caffey got off the "substance" (hint: it was white powder and it wasn't powdered sugar or flour). If they hadn't they would have joined Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison in rock stars who died too young.
With the exception of "Beavis and Butt-head" and "Jack---", the MTV awards started the downward spiral of the network that once prided itself on showing cutting-edge music videos that now shows dreck like "The Real World" and "Jersey Shore"
@nasdlu2010 The way this awards show went (w/Cyndi Lauper's rules in Yiddish, Roger Daltrey's guitar smash, Madonna's "Like a Virgin" trampfest), I wouldn't have blamed Belinda for hitting the stuff. I probably would have joined Belinda, Kathy, Jane, Charlotte, and Gina them also (although I don't advocate drug or cocaine use). With the drug problems and band member problems (ex. Jane Wiedlin leaving), the Go-Go's went from the top of the world in 1981 to disbanded in 1985.

"I like a lot of substance." Yeah, and I think we all know what substance that was.
