KDE4 was released prematurely on purpose, to "stimulate user feedback" among other things. They should have called it a preview release though. I don't see much of a gain for the time being if you have KDE 3.5.x and compiz-fusion running without issue.

i think it's hilarious how segregated linux users like to think they are from windows users, yet they try SO hard to make linux look and act like windows.
if there wasn't a big ugly K starin me in the face that entire video, i mighta thought i was lookin at dumbed down aero interface.
Well, your experience is different to mine. I had Ubuntu detect all my hardware while vista couldn't use my sound card, tv card or wireless card without searching for appropriate drivers (some of which aren't for vista).
I appreciate your point - because you're pretty spot on. But I feel the need to point out that Windows doesn't work better with your hardware because Windows is better with hardware than Linux - its because more hardware manufacturers are making Windows drivers than they are Linux drivers. But that is slowly changing.
I guess I'm saying that, out of the box, Linux *actually* has more support for hardware than Windows does. We're just waiting for the hardware makers on the other stuff.
PhazonYoshi:I completely agree with you, their are also issues like lack of substantial video and gaming softwares. But driver support has gotten much better in the last year alone in terms of wireless support... I would recommend Linux to everybody if it weren't for those big hiccups
When I tried to remove kde4 (final release, but far from functional) from my gutsy gibbon (I installed it with synaptic) it said it needs to close some daemon or something, and after that my pc keeps booting in textual mode. No any gui whatsoever! Anyone knows what should I do?
I have never seen KDE 4.0 in action before. I already have most of these fancy effects on my Mac. Congratulations to KDE, this is promising, top quality product and I can't wait to try it out on my FreeBSD.
I have to agree. KDE 4 isn't ready to be used yet. It might not crash every 30 seconds, but it's missing too many of the basics (you can't even get at most of the options right now, and it's barely customizable), and it's definitely not stable enough for everyday use.
i tried this kde 4 stuff out, and at first i thought it looked really good and that kde had a winner on there hands.... but then i tried to use it.... Half the stuff doesnt work... so i thought maybe i should use the K Desktop Manager..... tried that and it just didnt work at all.... kde needs to release stuff when it is ready.... i thought STABLE ment STABLE... whatever i am sticking to gnome for now... untill this WORKS
I have tried this kde 4 stuff... i must say at first i thought it looked really good and that kde stepped it up..... then i tried to use it..... half the stuff is missing or just doesnt work..... then i tried to use it under the kdm4 desktop manager.... it just didnt work at all then!!!..... kde needs to release stuff when it is ready .... i thought stable ment STABLE!!!!
very nice. Most of this stuff is actually useful instead of just pretty. I'm holding out till 4.1 though, too many functionalities missing in this release.

kde is faster and consumes lower resources compared to it's competing desktop environment -- GNOME

KDE 3 was pretty fast, but 4 feels a bit slower when I use it.

Are you idiot? Composite effect on linux were available 2 years before vista release.

Haha, go and download linux, run KDE4.
Blows aero out of the water, mate.
(And no, linux itself hasn't gotten any better, it's still driver issue ridden)

..........a stock ubuntu 8.04 install will ship with more out-of-the-box support for hardware than vista, sorry.
socceroos123 3 years ago
Tell that to every PC I've tried it on, then.
You: Oi, PC, work, k?
PC: No fuk u
Yeah, my PC is badass like that. (Psst, I had no trouble with Vista, only because it got my wireless card, got everything online)

Yes, that's my point, but I've never had a problem with any PC I've installed windows on, and linux has been a constant bother.
So, it's great if you can, but windows is solider on the compatibility side.
