@scenester64 Hahaha. No it came with a black case and I switched it to a clear case. But then I kept looking at it and how there was no artwork on the inside, so I switched it back to a black case. It looks cool either way though. =)
Hey Caitlin, just subscribed to your channel after 'Criterion Corner' linked to a video of your trips to B&N to take advantage of the awesome 50% off sale. Big Criterion fan myself, bit tougher for me though as I live in the UK, so the B&N sale is my time to go a bit crazy. Anyway, spotted a video you did about your new TV and Blu-ray player and just wondering why on your B&N Criterion purchases you didn't get the films on Blu? Most titles are well worth the extra few $'s.
@dotstarss Glad you found my channel! This probably sounds silly, but I don't buy Criterion blu rays because I want my collection to be all the same size. But I'm sure I will eventually cave and buy my favorites on blu. Just a matter of time... haha.
@Caitlin0120 I get that, in a weird sort of way, but I am sure you will adjust quickly when you see those gorgeous images in HD on that big tv...ha. You will also be making the most of your surround sound system- pick up The Thin Red Line on Blu-ray and I doubt you will go back after seeing/hearing that (great package Criterion have put together too, unsurprisingly). I can't wait for Le Samourai to make the Blu upgrade- take the plunge in preparation for that :)
Love, love, love Criterion. I personally own The Third Man, Royal Tanenbaums, Withnail & I, 39 Steps, Lady Vanishes, Last Days Of Disco, and Short Cuts. I have Rebecca, but NOT as Criterion.
Awesome Criterion update Caitlin! I definitely need to pick up Le Samourai! Sorry you didn't get Rebecca for $25 but $45 is still a very good price for that film...I paid a lot more when I got it! I should start getting the Chaplin criterions eventhough I already have the movies on DVD already(the 2-disc collector editions that came out a few years ago) Hey do you know what dates in July the CC sale is and are you referring to the B&N sale? :D
Great pick-ups, Le Samourai is one of my favourite film of all time. Years back i was really freaky with criterions. I used to buy every single criterion and hunt 1st and 2nd pressings and OOP titles, but now i slow down and buy only the ones i really want to see. Sometimes, cause i live in Europe, i have to spend small fortunes with them.
Criterions are getting so hard to find these days. (at least, in this area.) Borders had a 40% off sale, but at Borders prices, that doesn't mean much.
I don't know if someone else mentioned in a previous comment, but definitely check out Jean-Pierre Melville's other films. Le Cercle Rouge is another classic that Criterion has. =-)
haven't seen Der grosse Diktator in a long time, i remember it being brillant, i really need to refresh that memory!:)
Do you know if 'Les aventuriers' (The last Adventure) has been released by Criterion? It's another Alain Delon film, i i'm looking for a good release of it, just don't know where to look if it's released by Criterion!
This is random, but that KC Royals jersey is sweet! I definitely need to check out Le Samourai. I picked up Broadcast News also, great film. That cover for Rebecca is so cool, I wish I had that... hmmm : / Definitely looking forward to the B&N sale in July. Great vid, thumbs up!
@cynical44 Lol, I thought it was just a random little league jersey that I found. Le Samourai is awesome! For Rebecca, keep checking eBay! There's the occasional 20-something buy it now, I just didn't have the patience haha. Thanks for watching!
Very nice update. Speaking of Powell & Pressburger, have you seen A Canterbury Tale? I picked up the Criterion 2-disc set (thick case) recently and it's highly recommended to you. My other recent Criterion purchases are the 3-disc set of The Battle of Algiers, the 2-disc set of M and Hoop Dreams.
I have been buying many of the BFI release Blu-rays too. They are on-par with Criterion (imo). They have released some excellent and obscure British films.
@hairylittlewombat I've never seen A Canterbury Tale. I just looked and it's a play instantly! I love the thick cases. I need to watch M, I think it's a sin that I haven't yet!
the red sticker is because it was an exrental copy from the late Hollywood Video
That edition of Cleo is oop, now is available only in the Agnes Varda set [my next buy]
n u got the Tales of Hoffman!!! :), i will get Broadcast News on blu Hell-To-The-yes Rebecca 1 of my fav special features ever is the phone interview of Joan Fontaine, after i got my Rebecca, all my other oop came down like flies, Rebecca was my hardest criterion 2 get even harder than Nights Of Cabiria Pure Criterion Awesomeness
@MrJoel450 It should be illegal to put a sticker on a Criterion, especially on the artwork! The other 2 OOPs I really want are Grand Illusion and Notorious.
Alan Deloin is one of those great actors that is greatly under appreciated here in the states. A few years ago a pretty good boxed set was released. I'm pretty sure you can find it at a great price on Amazon.
Excellent Criterion haul there, Caitlin! "Le Samourai" is an über-cool movie! It inspired John Woo to make "The Killer" and Luc Besson to make "Leon: The Professional".
I love that scene you've shown from "The Great Dictator". It's the funniest part from the entire film! You should also check out "The Circus" if you get the chance! Of all the Chaplin films I've seen so far, this is the one that made me laugh the most!
@CinemaniacSeventy7 My favorite scene from Le Samourai is when he's getting ready to leave his apartment and he puts his hat on and adjusts it a little. How does he even make that look cool?!?!?! Haha. In The Great Dictator, I love when they start going back and forth about "der banana." I need to check out more Chaplin films!
Rebecca is one of my all time favorites! Cleo From 5 to 7 sounds interesting and it's on Netflix Instant so I will definitely be watching soon. I'm sad about Criterion leaving Netflix Instant Watch but I'm glad they will still be available on dvd. Great update. :)
@genekelly101 No Salo or Antichrist for me =) A couple of weeks ago my brother came in my room and he looked traumatized and I asked him what happened. He said "I just finished watching Antichrist" hahaha.
Catlin you can call Criterion and they will send you replacement Art work and case they are really good at customer service i wish other companies were like this great update..
I thought Broadcast News was a great movie all around. That's just my opinion right there. :)
Will you be getting Blow Out and/or Something Wild on Criterion DVD or Blu-ray at the Barnes & Noble sale this July? As for me, I'm hoping they'll have Something Wild, even if I have to have it special ordered...
@ChristopherMe1975 Haha. I am wearing a Royals shirt actually! (I had to look down to see if it was!). But no, I'm not from Missouri. I found the shirt at a vintage shop and thought it looked cool, lol.
I haven't seen the great dictator in stores. Hopefully it's in stock by july.
Sweet smell of success is one of those films that aged very well for me. Great film. Le samourai is one title I'm picking up day one of the sale, love that movie. Melville is a master of cool, le samourai and le cercle rouge have some of the coolest scenes and characters ever.
@bigtoe512 I pre-ordered it off Amazon as soon as it was announced. Alain Delon is in both those movies too! Melville is definitely the master of cool!
i want them all. i got Rebecca on ebay for 25 bucks last month, thats the best price i paid for an oop,, but im almost ashamed to say i paid 62 bucks for Tokyo Olympiad.
I love that "whoohoo" you put in their in the intro! Nice update! I need to buy some criterions during the upcoming sale. I want to check out Le Samourai! Rebecca is such a great film! How many criterions do you have now?
@ernguyen2 A little bit. I took French for about 5 years, but I remember very little of it. I like watching French movies and guessing what they're going to say based off the subtitles. @DrHasslein Hope you enjoy Le Samourai! I was wondering the same thing while watching The Great Dictator, especially when he's doing his Hitler speech impression.
Wow the cleo sounds good,I enjoy a good french film every now and then! I said it once I'll say it again, you're just so cute!!! :) Great update, the only criterion I own is "Chasing Amy",i have been trying to track down the "Charade" one!!!
I really need to see Cleo From 5 To 7, Sweet Smell Of Success, Rebecca and The Great Dictator! Le Samourai is indeed great. Have you seen Melville's Army Of Shadows? I loved that one too. Awesome buys!
@theInnerdvdPattern I haven't seen Army of Shadows yet! That's one I have to watch before July. I'm trying to make a list of about 8 Criterions that I'll buy. I'm definitely getting Le Doulos and Le Deuxieme Souffle!
@Caitlin0120 It's definitely one of my favorite war films even though it isn't a traditional one(i.e. war on the battlefield). The sad fact for me is that 8 might be my minimum for that sale! I usually go crazy when that comes around haha. The only other Melville film I've seen is Le Cercle Rouge so I need to check those out too!
