  • yo tambien quiero un betamax!!

  • @Chenoholic88 I do have recordings on VHS of TV shows I recorded from the late 80's/early 90's but they would be at my parents house. They would just be of the TV shows I liked to watch. I don't know that I often recorded the news.

  • Reagan administration???!!! El salvador???!!! Johnny Carson???!!! Sweet 80s memories! Greatest decade ever!

  • VHS is better as betamax

Sony had a prroblem with the drum When you rewind the tape the tape touch continue the drum and damage them. if 4 betamaxes in the time and all havesimulair the same problem .

even my first vhs is still running everyday.

the picturquality is betamax better than vhs but rebiatly wins vhs.

sorry for my bad englisch life in netherlands

  • Love the Betamax and 80's commercials! I was born in 84 so I love all things 80's

  • Did you ever fix this beta?

  • good old Beta, wish I could afford it... damn "vintage hoarders" jacked up the prices...

  • c7..c8 caps ..ic3 chip plus lower drum

  • c8-c7..caps..ic3 chip lower drum alighnment ..audio control adjustment helps also

  • Your SL-2400 likely requires repair or replacement of the tracking control potentiometer.

The potentiometers used in this and similar models are prone to failure, specifically the wiper can break off the knob in the assembly, breaking an electrical connection in the tracking circuit, which causes the VCR to act erratically in play (wow and flutter in sound and occasional "hiccup" in the picture).

Of course, normal service may also be required as well.

  • Very cool finding a Betamax in the box!

As another poster mentioned, chances are the caps on the capstan speed board are shot causing the flutter and variable speed. This is a dirt common problem with the Betamax SL series. Just about every SL series machine found today has this problem... but yours is about the best playing one I've seen in a long time.

  • my mistake..after some search i found that i had the Sony Betamax SL-20

  • it was a promotional video by Sony. Also, if i remember well it had also clips of Rocky 3 (the one with Mr. T) does anyone remember that, and if that video is available to watch on youtube?

  • Was that video entitled "Beta hi-fi SHOW TIME!!" by any chance? Because if it was, I've uploaded all the Sony sales pitches from that video onto my channel!

(I didn't upload any of the movie highlights due to copyright restrictions. It featured 2 James bond clips, a Rocky 3 clip, and some horse racing clip)

  • @Teraforce88 yes that was the video i'm was talking about, i've searched for that for ages! also, the VCR i had was the Betamax SL-20, the same that appears in the beginning of the film

  • thanks for the video.i had (well, my dad) had one similar to this but i don't remember it having that part with all the blue color buttons. i really can't remember if it was an European version or South Afrikan version,my that was there during that period. Also the VCR came with a tape with promotional video from Sony, and it had bits of a James Bond movie, where he is in helicopter controled remotly by a vilan and then he gains control of it and catches the vilan and throws him to a chamine...

  • I used to have the model similar to this. The only difference is the remote. Mine had the wired remote. Everything else is the same right up to the picture issues. I never could figure out the problem.

  • Did you ever get the wow and flutter problem straightened out? I have the same problem with my SLHF-40 and want to resolve it and get to the bottom of what may be causing it. Adjusting tracking and other things like are not doing the trick!

  • No I haven't got the problem fixed yet...I'm thinking it may be bad capacitors similar to the problem in other Betamax units.

  • Interesting! Ihad to get my 400 fixed in 2005 and when I got it back there was wow and flutter with some but not all tapes, so I don't think that may be the case. In fact, the person servicing it said that the power supply was bad among other problems and he said he fixed them all. I paid a pretty price for it getting fixed!

  • Hey there Chad, I don't know if you saw my video, but I got the problem with the SL-2000 resolved. It is working fine with cable, and am starting to resume recording on Betamax! I haven't found much in the way of retro stuff in a while but lan on doing some looking soon when things calm down a bit.

  • @retrochad I haven't looked into this problem yet. I use to find alot of these SL-2400 and SL-2300 models back in the 90's from flea markets. They had off speed playback problems and was able to adjust the pot switches and get the speed on, but then wasn't able to adjust the tracking and the wow and flutter would not go away on these. I was told there are faulty electrolytics in the power supply that causes this. As far as i gone recently is looking at the servo board and seeing those blue

  • Sanyo electrolytics as the SL-5000 does. I was not able to figure out any problems due to the VCR having other issues not related to this. If i inquire another one of these with this problem, first thing i would do is, replace the electrolytics in the power supply circuit and then the blue Sanyo caps on the servo board and see if that problem is resolved.. This was the series after the 5000 series and both series are all common playback issues, 5000 series more so than the 2300, 2400 series.

  • i love the mountain dew comercial!

  • What a neat Betamax step back in time!

While cleaning his room, a friend of mine handle me a large and glossy full color brochure vividly advertising this SL-2400 circa 1983!

I was some curious about how it worked and search some on the internet and found this video clip!

Thank you for sharing original poster!

Back to the 80's it was outrageously expensive trying to buy any of these imported "hi-tech" here in Peru (South America) because of the hyper-inflation and the US dollar was strong!

  • write to 'cassettemaster' (a youtube user) asking him why suddenly appears wow and flutter in your stored new betamax from sony. He knows about these machines

  • Didn't they have one of these in the movie Wall-e?

  • OMG they did have one of those in Wall-e, I actually never noticed ( no I am not sarcastic) LOL :)

  • The one in Wall-E is an SL-7200. I haven't seen it in a while and I didn't really notice really that much.

  • e defect ..fluctuatie de viteza!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ive always wanted a betamax

  • Try eBay or a flea market, bmtimv, they tend to go for aound $80- 300 US.

  • Love those little channel preset knobs. I remember those on my old mono Panasonic VCR from May 1985 ($350 new).

  • 6/5 for awesome.

  • Do they still make Bteamax tapes? If so or not where did you get that one?

  • If so you would probably have to buy them on the internet in large batches

  • Looks great, Sony made and still makes pretty good stuff. That box is probably worth just as much as the player now, judging by those Ebay prices.

  • that wow and flutter is probably the caps on the capstan speed board my sl-5000 does the same thing. only much worse but every new capacitor makes it a little bit better lol.

  • Thanks a lot for the suggestions, I will make sure and check it out. I may try using the ESR meter on the caps.

  • i really enjoyed this video, brings back all those memories.

  • That was great!!

  • That is so cool!

  • Panadol! Man I had forgotten all about that pain relief medicine. Those commercials sure bring back memories. We got our first vcr in 1983 and it was a JVC VHS model that actually still works to this day (my mom has it but rarely uses it any more). Thanks for posting this here.

  • Colorado's Channel 4?!?!?!?!?!

LOL at MOUNTAIN DEW... OMG..... thats sold!

and the NBC N logo... wow thats before my time

    you said 1983 right?

  • i have always wanted a betamax player! Especially a Sony. In fact I just sold a 46" Sony this evening at work (Sears). Its amazing to think how far they have come!

  • I hate Mountain Dew but I like that commercial!

  • a good looking vcr and tv,both mint . i too love old early 80s commercials.

  • Thanks! They used so many singing jingles for things back then which I just loved!

  • I love those commercials. I wouldn't mind having a couple of those air fresheners either.

  • Those "pretty as a picture" air fresheners really have a retro style!

  • My Grandad had one of those! His had a remote. Does this one still have the remote? I've got a Sanyo Betamax out in the shed I need to get out to see if it'll still work.

  • For some reason I can't seem to find the remote! I will have to look some more for it.

  • Well hopefully it'll turn up! I did get my Sanyo Betacord out of the shed, and got it working for the most part. I only ruined 1 tape in the process! It's from March 1985, and needs a heavy duty cleaning before I play a good tape in it. I'm sure I have some old commercials on my tapes!

  • What would be a good betamax VCR to try and track down if you want to transfer betamax to digital? Still got some tapes that need to be put on dvd. Did they ever make a stereo hifi model in betamax?

  • Yes there were Beta Hi-Fi models....however I don't have any, just the mono models.

  • Check to see if you have a bad tracking control on some of these units the control opened and it acted like a dirty contrrol/audio head. Also check the capstan shaft and pinch roller asembly.

  • Jessica Savitch--now there's a sad, sad story. Going thru those tapes must be like going through a time capsule.

  • AWESOME!! Man I love old commercials too!

It's cool seeing them on youtube, but having a videotape of old commercials is even more awesome!

  • A while ago I took all my old beta tapes and dubbed all the commercials onto one tape...Wish I could find it!

  • GASP!!! that looks identical to mine!

  • Check the belt Chad, Im sure it would be something that isnt moving that freely anymore. These machines love to run & run, they just keep going. Just a suggestion but you may want to loosen up your tapes to by fast forwarding and rewinding them.

  • I will need to open it up and check everything...not sure how long it has been since this machine was used.

  • I hope you find one! It's always exciting to see what's on the old tapes.

  • i dont get why they have the tape connter minute thingy

  • Comment removed

  • @StereoFidelity Sanyo never made a model similar to this. Sanyo produced there own Beta VCRS. No similarities to any of the Sony Betamax VCRS.

  • I miss the 80's
