  • 98.7 sounds like a mess IMO. Dom dropped the call on this one IMO.

  • It has now been 2 years since we lost our station V98.7 here in detroit.

  • Today has been a year since we lost our station V98.7 here in betroit.

  • I HATE THE NEW STATION! BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL V98.7!

  • Well, jazz was a victim of The Takeover!

  • I am still waiting for a Detroit station to pick up the smooth jazz format, beginning to wonder if they ever will.

  • and guess what, you were RIGHT, it IS amp radio now.

  • I was so angry that they changed the station. I know this sounds far-fetched but do you think the Illuminati (OTO) in the industry may have something to do with this because the billboards only show Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and there is a quite sinister billboard of Beyonce in dark vampish makeup and flames on her chest as if she is the devil from Hell. There are enough Top 40 stations...why the "TAKEOVER" (very suspicious) AMP station have to come out of nowhere?

  • Very well spoken.

  • Hey guys! Don't feel like you're the only ones frustrated. We're experiencing the same junk here in Florida! You tune in to Smooth Jazz WSJT 98.7.....and most of the time you get beyonce, toni braxton, or mixes. WHERE'S THE JAZZ? Paul Brown, Chuck Loeb, Norman Brown, Yutaka, Basia, etc. The so-called smooth jazz station formats are now a joke. Might as well listen to talk radio instead.

  • Yeah..Um..V-98.7 Smooth Jazz For The Win,Down With All These Now's Rev's Amp FM Formats!!

  • I was pissed to, I had to go out and buy a portable HD radio receiver and the signal is fine if you stay put, but if you try to listen in your car or a building the signal either doesn't come in or it drops in and out.

AMP radio sucks. Detroits FM market has been declining for years.

  • Is there even any smooth jazz in Detroit anymore?

  • Well there is, technically, if you buy an HD radio, but the amount of youtube friends I have is bigger than the amount of ppl with HD radio. lol

  • No, the FM market in Detroit is terrible. It has really took a turn for the worse over the last several years.

I gave up on the FM dial. I listen to XM.

  • The irony is that back in the day older people were more progressive than the younger program directors are today. Jazz, soul & rock were on a equal basis. Now? It's like musical apartheid.

  • man....i am seriously upset! smooth jazz v98.7 used to help me get to sleep every night!

  • @shari04-

See if you can pick up 90.9 WRCJ

It's theme is "Classical days and jazzy nights".

  • Also, this was Detroit's 3rd Smooth jazz station to bite the dust. The very first one was 92-3 The Wave WVAE, which was a pre-cursor to Smooth jazz, known as New age. It lasted from Dec 87 to Dec 89, it then became "the mix" WMXD which it is to this day. Another try was on the cursed 102.7 signal know as "CD 102.7" it lasted less then a year and flipped to hard rock. Then... V came on Dec 20, 1995. WVMV was actually put together by the same folks who modled 92.3 after 94.7 in LA.

  • First of all, thanks for the kind comments.

Second of all, I know that the 90's were completely opposite of what's going on right now. Back then, Top 40's were on life support. Advertisers couldn't get enough of Jazz in the 90's.

  • Hey, Good commentary. You know your radio stuff like I do :).

  • I'm with you on the loss of Smooth Jazz, but the end of V98.7 demonstrates the problem of the format. They go out with the type of non-jazz junk that killed the format, of course speaking about Dido. And then they mention that in 1995, they started V98.7 with Sade "Smooth Operator" yes an awesome song & does fit the format, but that song was 10 years old by that time! Smooth Jazz as a format had a problem evolving from about 1990 onward. It's been stuck in lame AC cuts &20 year old songs.

  • You make a good point!

  • I have to point out one thing.......TOP 40 STATIONS ARE NOT THE TOP LISTENED TO STATIONS IN DETROIT! longisland...the suburb ares r not considred Detroit! The only time people from the suburbs claim detroit, is when they r cheering at a damn hocky game. Anyother time they r not detroiters....u get where im comming from?

  • They may not be considered "part of Detroit", but Detroit's signals reach into the burbs just as stations in all big cities do.

  • Atlanta still needs a TRADITIONAL top 40. Hopefully they will be next to FINALLY get one!!! Since Star*94 and Q100 don't want to budge from their AC / Adult top 40 sound.

URBAN STATIONS... it would be smart to jump on the CLASSIC hip hop format now. Remember when the Rock n Roll generation came to a close and classic rock became the "real" rock and took off? Well... we are currently at the end of the hip hop generation, so... Anyway, I'm ready for all the electronic dance to hit USA in 3-5 yrs

  • Amp should not only be sure to get a good morning show (which is what draws in the listeners + better ratings), but ALSO include good mix shows and fun on air personalities, in addition to playing some hot dance/electro pop hits (which is the future sound of music, just incase people haven't noticed!). We still have a long way to go to catch up with other nations when it comes to true variety in top40, but I must admit that 2010+ is looking a bit brighter with the direction we're headed in music

  • Amp Radio kicking ass in LA, and will do the same in Detroit. We've gone through the era's of blues, jazz, rock n roll, disco, and the hip hop generation (who are now the parents) phase is currently coming to a close as the next big sound gets ready to take over! No better time than now to make a smart business decision to pop up Amp Radio. Those who know radio and the industry will understand all the changes currently taking place in stations across the U.S. recently. It's ALL Business...

  • you were right!!!!! It's Amp Radio!

  • Yep.

LA's 97.1 Amp logo (but with green letters) with NY 92.3 Now's website. Too bad I didn't get up in time to hear the change itself but maybe someone has an aircheck.

  • u can get it through HD and internet but it aint the same

  • urban Detroiters don't even listen to 955, they r trying to force this top 40 crap to people throats because because they are mad that hip hop and RB (INCLUDING JAZZ), but mainly music of other ethics have taken over the charts. 80 percent of Detroit is African American....trust me....they don't listen to 955(who just got rid of their only african american morning host and traffic host) I hope the new station fails! Jazz is a big part of Detroit.

  • 1. Channel 955 is Arbitron #1 in Detroit

    2. There's more to Detroit than just the inner city. Detroit does have suburbs.

    3. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that Detroit is a huge black market.

    4. I do agree that jazz is a huge part of Detroit, but it's also a huge part of Chicago, Atlanta, and New York. All of which lost jazz stations. It's a radio problem, not a music popularity problem.

  • Oh I agree with u, im just making my case, i wasnt debating with your knowledge at all. Detroits has it's suburbs, but they are segregated, not as much as it used to be. I also live in the suburbs, but I can tell you....more than half of the young caucasians in the suburbs listen the hip hop stations and you can see the influence of culture in them...they don't listen to Taylor Swift and all that.

  • And if scares their parents and their older generation that they look at black entertainers as being so cool. This is where it starts. As far as 955 goes...trust me......its mainly the morning crew that has listeners because of the comedy stuff.

By the way, keep up what you are doing here. You have very intelligent views. Feel free to correct me, I am also learning facts from you.

  • Oh, and did I mention Broadcast Architecture? Yeah. From what I know, they're a problem too.

  • I know. It's really a shame.

It's not only that, but it's another way of proving that the radio-heads at Clear Channel, CBS, and other just don't get it. Somebody's probably going to have to create a new ownership group that specializes in Smooth Jazz for this format to gain traction again. I hate PPM!

  • I tried posting a comment twice, I hope the third time is the charm,

Anyhoo, V98.7 is already gone. They changed format yesterday afternoon at 5pm.

Smooth jazz is a great format. I love the music! This PPM ratings thing is what is killing the format.
