I now have a ZZR600 which I've cleverly hid the socket into the little compartment in the fairing. Although the socket only runs with the ignition on so I don't drain the battery, I need to hard wire it into the loom, thus using minimal wiring as I am running one wire off the fuse box and the negative directly off an earthing point. It still does as intended, but more wire is being used and doesn't look as professional. I have high standards, mainly from my engineering background!
I did a rather good one with a GS500. My GS500 was a US import and was the model without a side light but still had the connector for it. With the 12v socket, I soldered one wire to a wire on the ignition switch and then soldered a bullet connector to the other wire on the socket. I then connected the bullet connector to the loom negative connector which would have otherwise been for the side light and used minimal wiring. The socket only worked with the ignition on which what was intended.
dang my 06 klr650 is havin major electrical problems, been blowing fuses occasionally, reg/rec just failed and not sure if i should buy a new reg/rec because im scared it might blow that one too! any suggestons?
Also, there's no way that I'd trust the suction cup mount with a GPS. They fall off just stuck to the windshield of a car in relatively windfree environment. There are tons of RAM mounts available... You could mount it to the crossbar on your handlebars if you didn't want to use your mirrors.
you're right, they do tend to fall off. Mine fell off once, but I have the gps unit tied to my bike. I use a length of nylon cord that I pulled out of the center of 550 cord and secure it to a quick disconnect ring on my key ring. Doesn't look as cool as a ram mount, but a heck of alot cheaper. I'll probably eventually buy a ram mount . . . but there are some other things I want/need first.
You can get a U-bolt mount RAM mount for under $35, shipped. That's less expensive than replacing your GPS if the screen cracks after the suction cup gives up and the unit clanks against one of the hard bits on your bike. ...I'm just sayin'...
whaddya do, work for ram mount? You're right, though. I just bought a set of pro-taper bars and 2" risers. Once I get those mounted, I'll probably pull the trigger on a proper gps mount, besides, I like an analog speedo. with the suction cup mount gps I'm stuck with a digital speed read out.
top work ' I see you drilled some holes in your airbox did you get much more power ? and where did you get your scrole box or map thingy on your bars . have fun out there ok
I drilled the airbox and jetted my carb at the same time; yes there was a noticeable increase in power, especially between 3,000 and 5,500 rpms, but I don't know if just drilling the airbox would give that much of a noticeable increase in power. Actual horsepower increase was probably 4 - 8 hp, but keep in mind I'm also running an IDS II SuperTrap with all 12-plates, a 155 jet and a K&N filter with the drilled airbox.

@raulibarra3 Lorance XOG. I paid $130 at a local walmart. The XOGs are not made anymore, so you may want to check out eBay.

Why didn't you just sink it into the fairing like everyone else?

@harrygutterballs cut the fairing!? I couldn't cut my baby.

@thercstuff I broke down and bought a RAM mount, it replaces one of the handlebar clamp bolts. Works like you read about.

The music f**kin blows. Great info, good video, cut the distracting tunes.

How come you need an inline fuse, does your cigerette lighter charger for the gps not have a fuse in it???
u2lova 2 years ago
@u2lova The fuse is in the male end of the cig lighter cable, I had to cut that off to hard wire it to the bike.

The music is distracting. If you *must* have music playing, make it an instrumental so it doesn't compete with *your* words.
