  • step one: leap head first in front of cab

step two: new yorkers do not like you, don't bother asking for help

    step three: ??????

    step four: profit

  • Who would have known that there is a science to taking a cab?

  • Step 1: Check if the driver of the cab is Ben Bailey. If it is him, Welcome to the CASH CAB!!!

  • the black taxi always stop for me

  • Step one: Make sure you're a white guy.

  • He's such a hottie! I'd take a cab with him anytime!

  • In the Bronx there are rarely any yellow cabs only liveries and when you hale one they stop for you!

the bad thing is that liveries don't have meters or receipts so they can rip you off!

  • Queentacos91 are you stupid ,this thing those not exist

  • Ahhhhhhhhhh the memories of gta iv

  • Just wave money in the air. I live in New York and I know the tricks!!

  • I saw an orange cab once.

  • kb auf hausaufgaben -.-

  • I just take the metro

  • what if you're black

  • @shockeyvz Same.

  • @shockeyvz cunt

  • good one!

  • In England (ANYWHERE in England apart from at taxi ranks): Stick arm out. Jump in. Go anywhere the driver is willing to take you - AND go back in the same cab if you want. And the fare is easy to understand. Much better.

  • @TheRushingWind That's pretty much how it is in NYC also, this video just over complicates it.

  • This Is why I take the subway and the bus, Fuck you cabbies.

  • Mention something about not placing your luggage in the trunk. He might take off before you have a chance to get your stuff from the trunk.

  • thanx. now i know now

  • "if you're not sure, ask a New Yorker. Most will be happy to help you...." Yeah right!!!! My boss is from New York and she says people over there are rude and nasty and give you the wrong directions most of the time.

  • Nice

  • i need to know a new yorker please help me

    he should be young

  • I like the jew at 0:25

  • How difficult is it???? lol

  • Wow! I thought he was Paul Rudd!

  • BULLSHIT!...taxi drivers are too busy to try to rip you off

BULLSHIT....%10-%20 is for Food Servers where they get wages and bennifits...Taxis are a luxery item . %40 $4.00 minimum .

From what I here euopeans will stiff the guy everytime.....

  • But there's only one Cash Cab!

  • Should try and catch a cab on the avenue in the direction you are going or on the street that goes the avenue and turns the direction you want so you don't have to go around the block

  • damn, newyorkers must spend a shit load of change on cabs. but then again, it must be very conveniant in a crowded city.

  • @Dreamingallyear thats why i walk..

    paying 'cabs' is ridiculous.

  • @Dreamingallyear I just walk

  • Hey guys when you hail a taxi driver how would u say the address and would u say 500 5th avenue or would u Just say 5 th av please help

  • @soniappoo i'm not a new yorker, but asaik you'd tell them which street running north to south (ie 5th avenue as you say) and the street that cuts through 5th avenue (going east to west) that is closest to where u want to go on 5th avenue, ie for 500 5th avenue that would be between 42nd and 43rd street. So you'd ask for 5th avenue between 42nd and 43rd street. Hope that helps

  • @droptheleash0 Thank you so much, you helped me a lot

  • @soniappoo No prob

  • cabs are annoying as fuck!

  • Real New Yorkers don't say "take the subway", we say im takin the train. If somebody says im taking the "SUBWAY" their not a native new yorker, they can be a transplant but not a native.

  • Comment removed

  • NEVER take the black taxis...they charge more than the yellow ones.

  • who doesn't know how to take a taxi...?

  • i would just stand in the middle of road and it will stop that way

  • new york city is one of the worst places representative of america. it's a dirty, stinky place with people who are rude and obnoxious. too bad foreigners or tourists who come here think that this is the real america. it isn't.

  • @scir91 I totally agree with you

  • as a tourist I had to take one of those "Lincon" cabs because none of the others wanted to stop, maybe it was for the Veterans day, it´s a nice car, wallet-killing bill tho :/

  • Step one: Wait until you see a taxi.

Step two: If you see the taxi, yell "TAXI! HEY YOU! YEAH YOU MOTHERFUCKIN' TAXI!"

Step three: If a cab doesn't come, rip off your clothes and run down the street naked crying.

  • To the person who said NYC Is really small, Your WRONG. o-O There's other parts of NYC to and not JUST Manhattan. ;]

  • haha clearly not a new yorker who made this video.

don't bother flagging a taxi that is three lanes away from the curb. I cann't tell you how many I see folks getting impatient.

go to busy intersection to get a cab and no they will not turn so you move to the curb on the side the taxis are most frequent

taxis do not go off duty.

  • and here's a little tidbit you clubbers may not know. A cab driver does not have to transport a passenger that is visibly drunk. So if you are getting passed up while waiting in front of that chic little club on the lower east side. Don't cry and yell racism.

It's not because you are black(although that doesn't help), it's because you are dancing and doing hip hop moves and acting like a drunk idiot while hailing a cab.

  • and here's another tip , try to hail the cab in the direction you are going. an example of what not to do: Don't be on the east side of 2nd avenue, 5 feet north of 34th street and then once you get in the cab , expect the driver to cut across four lanes of traffic so that he can get your little princess butt onto the fdr drive going north to 79th and york so you can get home in time to eat dinner with daddy after he had a long day of robbing people on wall street.

  • What if I run into the cash cab lol

  • @Swampertchamp then u better be ready to answer trivia!

  • @Swampertchamp You take the cash bro!

  • @Swampertchamp what the hell is the cash cab????????????

  • @Swampertchamp Doubt it

  • @Swampertchamp i hope your smart

  • @Swampertchamp The cash cab is only in toronto.

  • @Dustin2010james Nope, there's the US Cash Cab too.

  • @Swampertchamp

    Cash cab is in toronto

  • WTF! I prefer walking

  • @Swampertchamp that's in toronto ontario CANADA not new york

  • all you see in manhattan is yellow cabs!! it's crazy

  • my mom and i got in 3 diff cabs right beside penn station and asked them to drive us to our hotel in queens but nobody did. apparently they didnt know where it was. we had to hull a crapload of luggage around in the subways at 11 at night asking strangers where to go and which subway to take. i wish i watched this b4 i went to nyc. other than that, nyc was a fun experience, visit if u ever get the chance

  • @rey619yomama well..no reason to take a cab in NYC when there's subway pretty much EVERYWHERE and it's always full of people so you don't have to worry about strangers coming to attack you XD..i live in NYC and i know how to use the subway map IT'S EASY just look what train around where u at connects to the train that takes you to ur destination

  • @rey619yomama next time get a car service

secondly give them the address, the street and intersection, not

ohhh I'm staying at XYZ hotel..... I'm sure your little ipad/iphone has google earth.

  • @rmpbklyn i gave the exact address and i even had a gps with me. he just didnt want to drive us. but watever. we didn't take the taxi during our stay. the subway was way faster and defiantly cheaper.

  • Me:OH S**T IM LATE FOR WORK!!!!!(calling cab) corner on ernst and wall street and hurry

cash cab guy:WELCOME TO CASH CAB

    me:FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

  • Only 10,000 cabs in NYC??? I can't believe it!

  • @allinlodz nyc is really really small

  • 1:29 1:30 lol

  • new york silly!!!!!!!!!

  • My Favourite cab is the Crown Vic! :)

  • I been to New York City before and I was amaze on how many cabs there are in that state.

  • @liloboy911808 New York City is not a state! And is not a representation of the Whole State: New York,

  • @dekdk11 oh yeah i mean to say city lol

  • One time I didnt follow step 5 and as I opend the door I hit a delivery man on his bike... it waas funny

  • 45 dollars + tolls + 20% tip ? da fuck is wrong with you ppl

  • I'll be going to new york in december, can anyone tell me how much the fare will be traveling from La Guardia to MSG?

  • @vampire666 from laguardia to MSG should be between 22 and 25 dollars depending on traffic. there are no tolls if you tell the driver to take the 59st bridge as the driver should. I hope this help.

  • @josephbel Thank you, i appreciate the info :)

  • Another tip: Don't give your destination as something like, "162 Allen Street please". Instead, give the cabbie the destination street (or avenue) and its cross streets as well and say something more like, "Hi, Allen Street between Stanton and Rivington please". It helps if you know if your destination is on the west, east, north, or south side of the block as well if the cabbie is unfamiliar with the destination's area. Most cabbies are excellent these days though & know their way around.

  • At 1:18 "try indicating with your fingers you're only going a short distance." How do you do that?

  • @Gary190tube pinkies up!

  • Very helpful

  • WOW just say like 50th and Houston (HOWSTON) and say thanks.

  • great tips! The video was very helpful. Yeah, it is nice to know that we have rights in the cab. I would love to visit NYC, and since I've never taken a taxi lol, this is really helpful :)

  • I usually either walk or talk the subway. . . But good to know that I have a lot of rights when it comes to taxis as well :P

  • I lived in new york for a year and my mom basicaly just made us walk everywhere becuse she is scared to use the subway and taxi cabs....i dont know why we moved to new york.....

  • THE NEW YORK STATE TAXICAB DRIVER'S COMPANION -available at LULU

  • f..you , i knew that. you west my time

  • Most New Yorkers are going to tell you to take the subway and not a cab. Most people don't take cabs unless they're super drunk and can't manage it.

  • question if the taxi cabs go off dutty at 4;00 to change shifts when do they get back ondutty?

  • @tallymanjazz One by one, they just interchange with the current drivers, it seems as though a shift never ended

  • This was very helpful thank you Howcast :D

  • May 19 2010 Yellow Cab Strick i wont be working or driving a Yellow Cab that day i will pay my fees to rent it but iwont drive it ALL NYC CAB DRIVERS DONT SHOW UP FOR WORK

  • People dont Help u in NYC since i wont fuck ur self true Nyc Styal

  • I didn't know that they can't refuse you if you ask them to go outside Manhattan. My hotel was in Astoria, and no cab would take me there. I finally discovered the train, which was only $2.50 and the hotel had a shuttle there waiting. Perfect. Ah, also Step 12: If you're prone to motion sickness - be prepared. The ride is rough! I learned the hard way. My goal is to visit NYC enough that I'll know how to take the bus, the subway, and the trains - cause that's still the best way around.

  • Hello Mr.Dmitriy40, I've read most of your posts and they are really helpful. I will be travelling to Manhattan this coming March 4 and this will be my first time. How much would it cost from 96th St to the Ferry station that will bring me to the Statue of Liberty Island? My friends are telling me to take subway instead because its inexpensive and fast but I am not aware how to take the subway, that is why I feel like I'd rather use taxis.

    Thanks in advance

  • Thank you so much for this video, I will be in New York next week and this will be my first time in the US too.

  • @zarel22 same here :DD:D:D

  • Thank You! This helped so much!!

  • I drive a yellow cab in NYC. The video is mostly correct, but the fare went up a little bit. The fare info is posted on front doors, ON THE OUTSIDE of a cab. Also, now (2010), all yellow cabs have a touch screen in the back seat -- with all the information about the fare, a GPS map, and all the rules. There are more than 13,000 yellow cabs in NYC, soon all will be electric-gasoline hybrids. See you on the street!

    :)

  • Sorry, the fare info is posted on the REAR DOORS now (it used to be on front doors until few years ago). In any case, this info is on the outside of the cab, clearly visible to potential customers, and anyone on the street.

  • i usually just take the limo :D that my parents pay for. so comfortable.

  • @technoruler16 um. fuck you.

  • I've never understood why people take cabs in Manhattan unless it's really, REALLY late or they're too drunk to walk or navigate the subway.

  • evangel you're absolutely right, cab drivers beginn loosing money after about ten minutes on one fare (when it's busy) It's in the cabbies best interest to get the next fare and to stay in busy areas. It's a complete myth that cabbies take longer routes, why do you think they drive so fast? It's to get rid of you as fast as possible, which from the customers perspective is good. Whenever a cab driver takes the long way it's by mistake, remember a cab driver deals with dozens of fares in a shift.

  • 3:30 He gets out on the wrong side!

  • certain times during the day it's IMPOSSIBLE to get a cab. NEVER EVER get in one of those black cars, they will rip you off.

  • They take you the "scenic route". Which like, adds 30 bucks to the price.

  • wow. nice information. a must see for any tourist

  • Yeah, I wouldn't want to act like a noob like the guy in the video.

  • 8 dont weast ur time look at that cause it's not in are controlls it's all done automatic on holidays the drivers wont even see the freaking 50Cent or 1 dollars surcharge DID you know there are more then 13,000 yellow cabes in NYC ?

  • as part time cab driver step 1 u ask the cab/door men's the cab driver will tell you how much the fare is going to be from point A to B he might give u good estimate. but what are the chances of u ask the person on the street that he/she is new yorker not tourest ??.

  • Some cabs take the longer route to places for more money, so you better watch out for that...

  • SORRY but thats just foolish...

A cabbie (Im one full time), makes about 10cents per street, to rip someone off you would have to take a 40 blocks deviation just to make extra $4 bucks doesn't really makes much sense right?

A cabbie makes money by making more fares. If you stay in a cab for more than 10 minutes the cabbie is loosing money all ready, a cabbie needs to pick you up and take you to your destination in the fastest more efficient way,

  • I don't know.. haven't taken a cab in NYC, I just walk... But that's what I heard...

  • NinjaZX6R2009, I am a cab driver, and I agree with my colleague here. I make most money the moment I start the meter. Generally, the best passenger is a short-trip passenger. But there are some situations, when a driver might be tempted, especially long distance rides to outer Boroughs, etc. We now have a GPS map in the back seat, and you are right, IT NEVER HURTS FOR YOU TO PAY ATTENTION!

  • we visited nyc recently, took some cab rides and it was not expensive at all. Drivers were all ok, confortable rides and fast. Its the best option and really worths it.

  • viagensimagens, THANK YOU for your kind words! I am a yellow cab driver, and when I get a tourist in my car, I always try to help as much as I can with information and advice. I usually offer to take their picture IN A DRIVER'S SEAT, behind the wheel of my cab (I take out the keys, of course!). People love it!

    :)

    Come back to NYC soon!

  • Hi dmitriy40. It was very good to have your answer. You know, cab drivers like you are, at the same time, a kind of tourist promoters, or maybe public relation agents. While doing you job, you help people and make them keep nice memories from NYC and its people. We really plan to return to ny, and next time will try to get on your cab to take that picture. :-) Great idea!! best wishes from Rio, Brazil.

  • if you're a tourist and want to save money, do not take the cabs. public transport is much cheaper.

if you don't want to take the subway because you think that you might miss the sights on the way, then take the public buses. sure, it might take you a little longer than a cabride because of the stops, but it is far cheaper and you get to see the city as you ride through it.

  • flordemagda, if you are alone, your logic is correct.

But the statistical average NYC cab ride is about $7-8.

So if you are in a group of 3 or 4 people, many times cab is actually cheaper. Even for 2 people it might make more sense to pay $4 each for door-to-door service, rather than pay $2.25 each for subway or a bus. And you can also see the sights from a cab, you know! ... If you are in my cab, I could also tell you something about New York, gratis!

    :)

  • Wow rich hipster fools. I find it funny its great to use cabs sometimes but I find this silly.

  • thanks for all the guide coz im planning to go to new york

  • well for a cab driver to be out on the streets of New York City the have to pay $110 --$130 for 12 hours to take the cab from the Garage plus fill the the tank up once he is done working the 12 hour crazy ass shift not Only cab drivers are paying high price to rant the cab the have to deal with crazy Cops / and TLC fools any mistake wrong lane or wrong turn in manhattan u lose ur day pay since the tickets are even more the what u can make driving a cab So thats way Cab Driver are sometime rude

  • jamil316, I drive a yellow cab since 1992. People do not give shit about cab driver's problems, they want service. And they deserve service, cause they are paying you. The best attitude is NOT TO EXPECT CUSTOMERS to be nice to you, but you should still always BE NICE TO YOUR CUSTOMERS. That's the job. You are in the hospitality business. if you adopt this attitude, IT WILL PAY OFF for you! Good luck!

  • how much would i be looking at paying from newark to times square?

  • too much, take the path train...

  • this video is very interesting. Good information.

  • cabs are for tourist and rich yuppies. if you're on vacation and you want money to do something in new york city, TAKE THE DAMN SUBWAY!

  • Mhm!

  • I don't understand, if you're on vacation in New York, aren't you a tourist? :P

  • yea anybody that goes there that doesnt live there is a tourist

  • @MrPeeintheShower bah but the NY subway is such a pain to work out if you're only there for a couple of days- it's not easy to navigate like the London tube or Paris Metro

  • new york is and always will be a jungle!

  • so true.

  • ...If they try play to that game, say "Ok I'll hop out at the next light." Another driver tried to run that game and I said that and he straightened right up and I got there in minutes.

  • very interresting

  • I would've laughed if the cab driver was Ben Bailey.

    :D

  • you're a moron

  • very informative!

  • Oh, and PUT YOUR VALUABLES AWAY BEFORE getting out. Don't feel rushed, and do not start putting things away on your way out, as things are likely to fall out that way.

If you have a lot, ask the driver to be patient with you while gathering your belongings. MOST will be kind and may even help you.

Finally - If the driver is on the phone, use YOUR eyes to make sure he's paying attention. The ones on the phone are those who miss turns most. If they do, make sure they discount your fare.

  • Great vid, but...

    1. Most NYers may NOT know the fare as many take subways and busses. Check with a hotel concierge or go online.

    6. I asked for A/C, and the driver complained. Another refused to take me to one of the boroughs.

Complaining by phone means nothing because you have to go to court to complain!!

I suggest carrying a small camera with a video recorder. Record any confrontation, and make it public. When I used that method, one irate driver became instantly nice.

  • I am gonna use these tips next time I go to New York. Thanks HowCast!

  • CAbs are too expensive. Take the subway.

  • This is really informative. Thanks for posting!!

  • the guy is cute.. lol

  • wow..i never knew half that stuff..

  • i live in new york but wow there were a lot of facts in the video i didn't know about. thanks

  • @Cherrysakura5 how did u get around b4? haha

  • it's so true at the end always get the reciept and look around to make shure you have your things because i was in NYC b4 and i almost forgot my phone in their and the guy jiped me and added an extra 5 dollars!!:(

  • Super helpful!

  • Have they done a video titled, "How to use your brain and apply some common sense"?

  • awesome video!

  • lol @ 1:30 (step 5)

  • you are a gay ass bozellnyc

  • you get mad at him for judging, and here you go, doing the same thing. Nice.

  • a little spelling and punctuation would really help people to read what you're trying to say

  • Trolling the net to leave still nasty replies simply means you are at work stealing from your employers time or you are unemployed and a waste. Either way you are an ass.

  • Don' be a dumbass, and don't try to sound smart and superior by talking down to people. And though this is far from the point, he could easily be relaxing on the computer after work hours, or enjoying a day off.

  • Didn't you just did the same thing? ...

  • Thank you Pink! ; )

  • Cash cab

  • Cash Cab! But seriously, I'm a new yorker and I didn't even know all that!
