I have met many Uke players the last few years in the New England area - it seems to me that these players border on the fanatical (in a GOOD way) and many are members of Uke Groups where upwards of 50 players meet and share songs and play together. It is indeed an infectiously happy instrument as are those who "Uke". Formby was obviously a leader and an icon in promoting this particular instrument's prominence. To George Formby - Cheers, sir!
I just luv it hearing and actually seein on utube George Forby ,as you say what a legacy ,always clean no swearing ,God bless you George ,shame only us old uns can remember your lovely songs ,oh such sweet memories!
@bubrockit Righto, old sock...Spend a pound (spend money); I'm rather rushed (looking disheveled); Dressed like all the sports (like all the well dressed guys) Little stick of Blackpool Rock (famous peppermint stick candy from the Blackpool area of London). Bat'n (Baton) Promenade (open air market) Pulled me shirt off (the candy is famous for being sticky) took me photographic cost me one and three (took picture, cost 1 shilling 3 pence)
@diddymuck Nice try matey, however I must correct you on the following:
Blackpool is on the North West Coast of Lancashire, England, on the coast of the Irish Sea, around 200 miles North of London.
The Promenade is the walk along the shore, which is lined with shops, arcades and the famous Blackpool Tramway. Part of this is known locally as the "Golden Mile", owing to Blackpool Beach's famously golden sands between North and South Shore.
@diddymuck Frankly, I think that any concept of the humour of George Formby and the context of the time in which it took place has gone right over your head.Just for starters, Blackpool Rock is not a peppermint candy and Blackpool is 200 miles north of London. This is not to mention the contribution that George made to the moral of British people during the dark days of the second world war. Are you in the USA?. If you are, that would explain everything!
Rock is a type of hard stick-shaped boiled sugar confectionery most usually flavoured with peppermint or spearmint. It is commonly sold at tourist (usually seaside) resorts in the UK (like Brighton or Blackpool).

@Nojnotpu "the Blackpool area of London" should have been "Blackpool area of England". so sue me.

Apparently he used to have a few Ukuleles tuned differently because he only knew a few chords.
