  • we are nothing but specks of dust dwelling on a dust speck

  • We may not be significant, but at least we live in the second largest galaxy in out cluster.

On the other hand we're actually set for a collision course with the largest, but nobody needs to think about that.

  • The universe is a massive place, so massive, beautiful, yet at the same time makes me think how little, and insignificant we are in comparison to the whole universe, but at the same time how we must work towards exploring the universe.

  • Loved watching this, the mere thoughts of how big space is, simply overloads one's mind when thought upon too long.

  • amazing

  • It is nice to see that the Lord Jesus Christ is still holding things together; did anyone notice, how the strands of galactic clusters, resemble DNA strands?

  • @ZanyJIntPictures fuck you and your religion delusion!!! What i am seeing is God himself. the universe is God and it is never created by a mythical figure like jesus, krishna, horus, allah, and other bullshit ideas!

  • @watchWorld100

you're a few thousands years too young to claim anything is false. WE all are. People read a few science books or skimmed a few scriptures and suddenly "know" something.

The video itself basically says, we still know sh** about the grand scheme of the universe. Ignorance shades on both end of the spectrum..

  • @ZanyJIntPictures You give far too much credit to an Earth-bound deity devised by primitives.

  • @Akira625

Perhaps we give too much credit to primitive logic.

  • See that one at 5:47? I wanna go THERE!

  • subhanallah.... im actually crying now...

  • I'm favoriting this video for multi reasons, one of which is the potential liberational value of perspectives, especially the vast perspectives presented here.

  • Is the music at the end Sigur Ros? I see a suggested Sigur Ros video in the side bar

  • The Universe looks like modern art. Breathtaking photography. Thanks for the video.

  • sexykatie90 HAPPY NEW YEARS

  • GalacticChimp, critics are a dime a dozen; why don't you make a vid of you own and show us all how it should be done?

  • Hoppipolla: the song of mankind.

  • The Universe in all its entirety is far too big, incredibly big , unfathomably big for us creatures and creatures like us (which are probably many) to think we are natures finest achievements! Apart from Dark Matter and its mystical energy there has to be an undiscovered form of energy or matter out there! Its just too big for there not to be !

  • Need more Morgan Freeman.

  • @Buccura fuck yeah. Needs MOAR Morgan Freeman.

  • Fascinating video...So mind boggling on how vast the universe really is..WE LIVE IN A MYSTERY!!!

  • If I had a sturdy space ship that could travel even 1/4 or even 1/8 the speed of light and could comfortably provide for me, then it would be worth being able to live forever. Me and my ship in infinite exploration.

  • Pff, far BEYOND incomprehensible size. Altered flow of time, multiple space-dimensions, infinite size, possible areas outside of our universe where space and time itself don't even exist... The Cosmos is the only thing I know that lacks so much logic :P. But in a way, it makes the most sense of anything since it defines the word "sense" itself just like every other word (that we couldn't have come up with if the universe didn't exist). Beuh, trippy :P.

  • @Smonjirez The most awesome comment I have read on anything, A really deep thought ! :-)

  • The graphics were not fantastic (and the planets were not to scale), but I enjoyed the ending.

  • Great video. Love Sigur ros.

  • We talk about the possibility of traveling to the stars. Will we ever go there? Will we ever get this far? Ever read Horton hears a Who? That's basically our place in the universe.....

  • We talk about the possibility of traveling to the stars. Will we ever go there? Will we ever get this far?

  • proof that the flying spaghetti monster created all..

  • Note on credits: This video is an excerpt from Documentary 'The Priviledged Planet'

  • @LaniBanani Yeah, sure. Nice Try!

  • @Daztents

The full 6.55 narrated version is in the Extras of the DVD

    (see eymi.net/media/Priviledged-Planet.shtml )

You can also see the other version of it on youtube by searching for

"Privileged Plant (Chapter 12 of 12)" it starts at 0:25 seconds in.

  • @LaniBanani Like I said: Nice Try.

  • @Daztents

    See my video response:

I show the Main Menu of The Privileged Planet DVD

    then the Bonus Extras Menu

then just the beginning of the 'Journey to the Edge of the Universe'

The creators of this video deserve their credit

  • everything we think works but everything we guess fails.

  • Damn i forgot my keys on earth!

  • All that space, you can't tell me that humans are the only form of life.

  • @nemisisbeta I don't think that the amount of space should determine the amount of anything. Even at the subatomic level, most of reality is empty space. Why does life have to exist anywhere else? Is there a logical reason for it to be elsewhere? Why can't this universe be ours? Maybe it's our destiny to plant life across the universe. Just one possibility.

  • Remember I was here.Thai

  • its scary to think that its dam near impossible to cross our own galaxy, never mind the millions of light years it will take just to get to our closest galaxy.

just the sheer size of the universe we can see is truly mind boggling considering the human race has not even travelled further in space than the moon.

i mean, if you think about it, aliens will think we're pussies.

  • Imagine having low self esteem and doing that trip? "Oh.... so I was right. I really am less important than a pebble."

  • Why do we value human life so much, if all in all it's so small and insignificant? We treat murder like it's such a bad thing....

  • @TomCat2800 of course it's a bad thing

  • @TomCat2800 every life is precious, regardless of its significance. us, humans, must ascend, always, to discover new things and find new answers. why? cause that's our nature...that and cause we're overpopulating our planet, we have to start colonizing other worlds.

  • @chris200830 First of all WE"RE not overpopulating our planet, certain races and ethnogroups are and statistics have proven such. Second colonizing other planets will never be like our own. Who would want to live in some techno container on mars? But by the time that'll happen...forget it... Lastly, I'm an agnostic, I don't know whether there is a God, life is quite precious I know which is hard to imagine that it all just "came to be through randomness" so idk really....

  • @SirGeorge8600 well, hello, mr agnostic! i'm an atheist! and i don't understand what you mean by "certain races and ethnogroups", are they not humans as well? stop dividing our species into races, etc. and look at it as a whole! and i never said anything about colonizing Mars. we're searching for planets suitable for our bodies. but, i agree, our Home can never be replaced!

  • @chris200830 My name is George, please don't identify me with some cheap religious view label. Something idiotic society does these days. We are all humans, however humans are different. Are species is divided by race, ethnogroups, and other forms and indeed it effects genetics which in turn has been scientifically proven to effect physical performance, life expectancy, intelligence, etc. Human equality by a far does not exist, and I can tell you there's a greater chance of God existing rather.

  • @SirGeorge8600 sorry, our species*

  • @SirGeorge8600 races, ethnogroups...yes, an asian is different than an european, has differemt aptitudes, different skin colour, etc. but he's still a human being! and i don't know where you got the idea of me putting a label on you. your beliefs don't concern me. you told me you were an agnostic and i just felt like sharing my point of view on the matter. anyway, let's not quarrel or start an argument. you have your way of seeing things and i have mine!

  • @SirGeorge8600 interesting... If you read some articles you would know scientists are trying to gene modify humans to have better qualities than us. Like bears slumbering half a year. The cheetah with great bones. And the cockroach tough life. Scientists are trying to engineer the human race geneticly. So it isn't that fragile when we set up a new space mission. Humanity on other planets will probably be taller and stronger than ourselves, maybe even with fur if we land on other planets.

  • @Chazorvigg i didn't realize YOU were the moderator for HIS channel, that is interesting, big ego=small penis inferiority complex, napoleon syndrome is rampant go play with your tweezers

  • @isawanangel2 Btw... What shit do i put in my head lol? Oh nvm you blocked me, you are very mad lol

  • @SirGeorge8600 that's right, we've had 2.5 kids for a while roughly, and it's the current birth rate x7x7xy7 or something, there is definately some kind of god, intelligent energy of some sort, and most people are conscious of it, you seek through prayer and meditation is listening, it's there all the time whether you're aware of it or not (probably demons in some too, i heard a scary one on excorcism but not like the movies) but ask anyone whose had a near death experience, etc

  • @isawanangel2 i've had a near death experience. i was trapped in a forest full with bears at 11:00 PM, it was pitch dark and i didn't have my flashlight with me and you know who saved me? life-guards!

  • @isawanangel2 If you hear voices it's insanity not god. the God question is not a interesting subject here. No proof. No need. belief in Higher powers are for pussies who have to admit themselves weak and vulnerable to continue their miserable lifestyle. You decide everything yourself. It follows consequences true, but nothing is left to a higher power. And if you're too scared of the consequences you're a pussy.

  • @Chazorvigg excuse me what, are you talking to me? i only saw one once, lol..

  • @isawanangel2 What exactly was hard to understand? Just read it.

  • @Chazorvigg oh the weird video i heard on real excorcism, i dont hear voices, meditation is centering your mind, dont you understand context, you're a loon

  • @Chazorvigg how can you think, i just saw your channel, totally devoid of anything tasteful, dont put that shit in your head, that is what is wrong with you, that's karma, that's why you get shit back

  • @Chazorvigg i think princerpal had the excorism video, you should watch it several times

  • @isawanangel2 Wow 6-7 comments, umad?

  • @Chazorvigg you dont know anything about dmt or near death or pineal gland, you're an empty void, tune up your chakras

  • @Chazorvigg actually hearing voices it's schizophrenia, i dont normally listen to illiterates, blocked

  • I've watched way to many space videos today. Once you watch one you just can't stop... guys i think i have an addiction problem.

  • this is truly impressive. what a wonderful montage of deep-space photography. deeply stirring... is there any way to obtain a hi-def copy of this video?

  • And, if you multiplied whatever the total size of our universe is to the power of exactly how many atoms there are in our universe aggregate, that new vastly expanded universe that you have now produced wouldn't even scratch the surface of whatever infinity is, and an infinite realm must of necessity exist.

  • it is amazing, but I rather hear information rather than stupid music.

    mike

  • i want pluto to be a planet! because the F***ING SCIENTICES FAULT!!!!

  • hey...it was a planet when you were a kid...it still is. just because some people say its just a rock doesnt mean it is...plus no one has ever been on it so noone knows.

  • Comment removed

  • @ClubPenguinGuy13 Pluto portrays more characteristics of a Kuiper Belt Object than those of a planet. Pluto orbits it's moon, while at the same time the moon orbits Pluto. Pluto has an irregular orbit like some KBOs, and it's just too small to be a planet.

  • The music at the end of this video is so annoying. I turn the volume down to watch the end of this video. Whoever upload this video need to use better music.

  • @bendix109 and what music would that be, rock'n roll, rap, hip hop? the music is just fine!

  • the last picture was beautiful.

the universe is so scary yet so beautiful, ughhhh i'd do anything to explore space right now, you can't even imagine how interested i am in this stuff.

  • you feel so small

  • This is old science now.

  • Life is Great

  • Mind blowing.

  • I've watched this video about 10 times and I still find it great.

  • The absolute zero was the starting point of all the universe. An infinity of emptiness combining with equal volume of the coldness, those two elements became the beginning of everything. I'll tell all in my new book.

  • Boy this is mind blowing! Astronomy is probably the greatest science of them all. It's not just "about the stars". It covers everything from the tinniest sub-atomic particle to the the greatest structures in the universe. It also includes chemistry when talking about extraterrestrial life and how it might form.

  • When you stand back and look at it as a whole you realize we're nothing but a piece of dust on a Galactic Football Field. But we're not a ordinary piece of dust. We are a very curious piece of dust that hopes to discover, unravel, and put a conclusion to all occurrences in our universe.

  • @m1foley

It'd be nice to live in a world where people just accepted the fact that no one knows the answers to all these questions, but as long as there's people who seek power/money through "knowing" all the answers, I don't think it will ever happen. We'll always have people who claim they know, but in reality, they're just as clueless as the rest of us.

I love that quote as well

  • ah sigur ros. epic.

  • i think that humans are not going to be able to go out there, except if : only through generations, or, robots could do it but they, i am not sure about to contemplate with consciousness , or may be replicants like in blade runner, transfer all the information of the brain and connect every nerve to some electronic device, and or to keep the brain working.... without this body. any body can imagine things, why not? after all this is the way we design things

  • after all that, people still think we are the only ones!!!!!

  • THANK YOU GOD

  • MAKES YOU FEEL SO...small.

  • The large-scale structure of the visible universe can be discerned from the vantage point we are at, already, viz. from Earth. Granted, if we were to voyage away from the Earth at the speed of light the Milky Way galaxy, of which our Earth and Sun are a part, would appear to us like any other spiral galaxy viewable through a telescope. If one were to voyage away from the Earth for billions of years at the speed of light, the universe would appear very much the same as it does now from Earth.

  • Correction: You would have to reduce your speed from 186,000 miles per second to about 25 MPH in order to point your telescope through the port-hole of your space-craft so that any digital photos you took of the cosmos, there, wouldn't turn out blurred. As a matter of fact, turn your engine off before taking your shot to avoid the possibility of producing a blurred image.

  • Clarification: It would look the same in the sense that large-scale structure is homogeneous throughout the Cosmos. The familiar galaxies that we know by name in our neighborhood of galaxies would not be the ones we were looking at from another location in the Universe, but for all practical purposes, galaxies and clusters of galaxies would look like any of the others no matter from where they were being viewed. If you are viewing a model of the Cosmos, you are only on the imaginary edge of it.

  • love the video .all else wouldn't mattert any way

  • Comment removed

  • @VincentSinclair one thing you know for sure is that u have to breathe to live .... you can't think a way out of it --- extrapolate from there...

  • @symelian,. lol i like that my comment got -5 ratings lol, anyway,...

as to your "breathing" question, perhaps we only think were breathing, as in a dream. Reality could just be a thought, anything is possible,

But i believe in Evolution, i don't believe in god or any of that other religious bull shit

  • So nothing created everything is what your saying.

  • good and valid points

  • Anyone still feel significant after this video? XD

  • i still feel (barely)significant ill try my best untill the day i die to study this universe !

  • @TAz69x I sure do! I'm always amused at the illogical assumption by most people that location and size determines significance. And on top of that, I am able to see and understand the entire cosmos! That ought to make anyone feel significant!!!

  • @TAz69x

On the cosmic scale? No? But who is? On the world scale? Not either, only few are, and even then they only are for a small moment. The planet spins on even without us after all.

Ultimately when it comes to these very big and very small scales what we do is pretty much meaningless.

But on a personal level, sure everyone would be significant to themselves. Because if they didn't exist the point of significance would be moot.

    It's a matter of perspective.

  • wtf is with all the gay comments?

    this video is about space

    fags!

  • @jizzythecool so let me see if I got this. If I disagree that he's gay then I should send you a message? But if I agree that he is gay as so you asserted, then I'm gay too just like you considering you think he's gay? Wow, you truly are a moron. You not liking Carl Sagan just let's the rest of us no we are not dimwitted like you. Thank the stars. Btw, I truly am gay so you calling me gay or a faggot won't hurt my feelings one bit.

  • if that doesn,t move you then you,re brain dead. i know americans like to say awsome alot, even about hot dogs, but that,s the true meaning.

  • gravity rules all

  • the cartwheel galaxy amazing

  • i know nothing about this stuff so could someone help me out....why exactly, would time "dramatically alter" if we were to travel at the speed of light?

  • light travels slowly over the vast emptiness of space so we thing a long time after it happens because light travels 186 miles per secound 186 miles in a secound so if you go far enough it will take you back in time

  • Time cannot alter it is Relative, meaning that it is a unit to measure the distance of occurance between 2 events. in fact ive heard that time can actually be measured by light speed because it is universal all over the....universe lol no matter how fast u are going light will appear to be going the same speed, u cannot travel the speed of light because it would take an infinite amount of energy to move 1 atom that fast because as things increase in velocity they increase in mass. hope it helps

  • just imagine if there were universes like there where galaxies that would make us unbealivble small Sigur Ros - Hoppípolla is a great acompinament to those amazing pictures that was truly beautiful!

  • What also really amazes me is that when we look at these pictures of galaxies and nebulas, we're looking back in time, at how the galaxies looked back when the light, that reaches us now, first was produced. Just like when you're looking at something a metre from you. Your're not seeing It but the light it sent out some millisecond ago. But here we're talking about milions of years! Even before the earth was created. That's so big my head hurts thinking about it.

  • Great vid. Seeing how tiny Earth is (and how insignificant we are) compared to the Universe is deeply humbling. The Universe is more beautiful, more awesome, more amazing than any "divine imaginary friend" could ever be!

  • The music at the end made it sound like it was gonna say something like:

"In Loving Memory of Earth 4.5 Billion BC - 5.7 Billion AD."

    lol

  • IF we cant even get to Mars.

send probes to Jupiter HOW can we

    see 25 Trillion miles away?

OR 1000 light yrs from the sun

or see whats out IF we travel 100,000

Years? or 14 Billion years of travel

    seems Hard to Believe.

  • its ok christian...one step at at time...take it all in...i know its scary...the reality is grim and we are basically nothing in the universe aand even if we werent in this planet..it wouldnt affect anything...LOL...christian in the room!

  • im NOT a christian you dumb Cunt!

REread my comment.i said its hard to believe

whats out there if we "travel" for 14 Billion Years. How can they see that far!?

  • LOL u gotta look for God jajajaajaj....u shouldnt6 be insulting like that while ur going to church

  • LEARN to fuckin READ Retard why do you keep on with this Notion im Religious?

shut up you GAY dumb FAG

  • lol crymore christian...maybe ur God will one day give me a beating...christian little girl

  • it has NOTHING to do with God

we can NOT see whats out there if we

"traveled for Billions of years" im NOT a christian either,

    You Dumb GAY Homosexual

  • Comment removed

  • a gay homosexual is actually a heterosexual.

    you fail.

  • Comment removed

  • whats up with you and gays? You trying to scan youtube for em or something?

  • NO dummy not sure how long youv been

online or have the internet But calling somthing Gay is an insult. I was calling that dumb Mexican that because he insulted me. Back to my Original Question HOW do we know whats a billion light years out there if we cant see planet x?

  • HEY! I am christian and I still believe in the big bang theroy, evelution, and everything else in the universe!

  • it's called a telescope...

  • altair - DUH! we still can't see whats out there

IF we travel for 100,000 years or 14 Billion years.

  • uhhh ok what

  • lol u guys are hilarious they cant use normal optic telescopes to see things that would of not appeared to have happened yet because the light waves have not hit earth.. now we use telescopes that fire infrared waves to intercept incoming photons (or light particles) thousands of light years away seeing photographs of things that happened a long time ago thats the best answer i can give lol these events have already occured so its looking into the past i guess..

  • ummm.... ok yeah I know this.... I don't get why everyone is all of the sudden arguing with me one something I agree with.... WTF IS HAPPENING AHHH!!!

  • uhh, dude, you know that infared waves are made of photons, and travel at the same speed? firing an infared wave at something, then waiting for the infared to get back would take twice as long...

i think you're getting confused with infared astronomy, which detects infared emissions from stellar objects, since the infared goes through dust clouds etc and optical doesnt.

  • That music was really annoying.

  • I'm in despair, nigga

  • Allah what... Allah is man made, there are no gods...

The universe is beyond childlike gods

  • For Allah this is nothing more than decoration!

  • I <3 SPACE

so much for us to eventually explore

  • Unless we surpass the speed of light, our species will never visit other worlds.

  • The sheer vastness of the universe is incredible. I wish I could swim through the art that is space eternally.

  • u cant nigga

  • i bet there are other universes, like say our universe is a star, and the galaxy has 300 billion stars, thats 300 billion universes, then there are 300 billion galaxys, and it just keeps going on and on

  • only 1 dna structered planet

  • god is true and god is one

  • and 2 gods dont make a right !

  • That last bit, when the music sort came together with the overall theme of awe and wonder of the sheer beauty I felt, just blew away all trace of similar feeling I ever had for religion.

I mean religion is so puny compared to what science is showing here!!!

The most amazing thing is to realise that as wonderful and beautiful as the Universe is shown on this video, we are also part of that and NOT insignificant in any way!

  • people are hating on religion and still, science (which is build on facts) claims that everything you just saw in the video, came into existence out of nothing.. That's kinda lol...

  • Science claims that spacetime expanded from a singularity; science does not claim to know what, if anything, happened before the Big Bang. There are some proposals about a multiverse, multiple big bangs, etc., but they are all untested hypotheses. In short, science says "we don't know yet."

"A fool who recognizes his own ignorance is thereby in fact a wise man, but a fool who considers himself wise -- that is what one really calls a fool." -Gautama Buddha

  • Well, they say a theory is true until it is proven wrong, but just because it's a qualified guess it doesn't make it factual science, and in a sence it's therefore no more believeable and factual than the theory's we have from religion?

An idea that is developed and put into action is more important than an idea that exists only as an idea. - Buddha

  • @ LukeValentino

The word you're talking about is hypothesis...A theory in science is much different than a theory in any other discipline

  • A hypothesis is a tentative explanation for an observation, phenomenon, or scientific problem that can be tested by further investigation.

A theory is a system of rules, procedures, and assumptions used to produce a result , abstract knowledge ,reasoning and a speculative or conjectural view of an idea

    Sounds pretty close to me.

  • Well the difference is that a hypothesis isn't even verified because it's more of an educated guess. Here's a better definition of a theory

A scheme or system of ideas or statements held as an explanation or account of a group of facts or phenomena; a hypothesis that has been confirmed or established by observation or experiment, and is propounded or accepted as accounting for the known facts; a statement of what are held to be the general laws, principles, or causes of something known or obsvd

  • thats a pretty good saying anyway your right that what sepereaes science from religion

  • One of my all time favorite quotes. Nicely done.

  • hahaha people still quote bible..

    fuck all the gods..

    they are so smal........

  • 'Cause we guarding the palace so majestic;

    Guarding the palace so realistic!

  • WHAT THE FUCK IS OUT THERE?!?!?! :O

  • Galactus

  • I never hate the One True God, but the god of the people I hated...
