@Colecz In all fairness, even if you only consider the time before there were hats, TF2 received much more support, and many more free updates than any other non-subscription based game that I can think of.

I stopped playing around the time when in game chat started looking like trade channels from MMOs, but by then I had already more than gotten my money's worth out of it.

Team Fortress was excellent in it's day. It was a quake mod. HL did bring TF over but TFC was introduced early in the piece (no grapples, etc.)

TFC was insanely good at the time. This video got everyone excited and was amazing back then. Support classes filling machine guns with ammo, etc. Oh the glory days :)

this had to be at least 2000, and at that time, this was the pinnacle of both technology and gameplay design. It wasnt quite finalized, but it was what they had, and then the long cycle started and they went through 3 or 4 games before they gave us the tf2 we know and love.

SO dont treat it like its a misstep and its not very good, because once upon a time, this is what people wanted. Just think of it as an evolution

the half-life engine was by no means state of the art when it came out in 1998. By the time TF2 was being planned for original release it was a dinosaur. valve was smart to can this version.

It's funny how, ironically, the graphical improvements that came out after this trailer make the current TF2 look even more realistic than this (sentries and teleporters aside).
