  • My dad didn't believe that girls needed to know any of this stuff, so I've learned most of what I know from watching your videos. Thanks for posting them. :)

  • @EvaBrick8 With all due respect, your Dad was wrong. Everyone needs to be empowered so they can do repairs.

  • Can you post an updated window installation with flashing utilized? I would especially like to see how you flash the inside corners on the sill. Thank you!

  • tim could you use foam filler instead of insulation in the gaps beetween the wall and window frame??

  • @pathaanx Yes. Watch my video about that.

  • @AsktheBuilder thanks for the reply.

  • Must be much different up north. No flashing, sealant or stainless screws to attach the window. That would be across the street the first time a storm him here. we have seal with vulcum, flashing under the flange and over using peel n stick . Tyvec tape would get your window job red flagged and they make you remove everything and start over.

  • @youbestbequiet Thanks for your comment. This video was taped before the new tapes were widely available. I suggest you tape a video showing how you do it and place that video on your channel for all to see. It would be helpful.

  • Wonderful presentation

  • Hi, I am a novice when it comes to window replacement..I have a large living room picture window I'd like to replace..I want the center window to be able to open..so I am wondering if I remove this window sized 84" long and 54" high..could I purchase 3 seperate windows with a size that is 84x54 by being 28" x 54" each? this size is a double hung available at Home Depot. Or do I need to order this window from the manufacturer so all 3 windows can be welded together to make 1 large window

  • @ILoveLucyE68NY If you replace you windows buy Andersen Windows.

  • two things what happen to the the window you forgot to order and what happened to your fingernail

  • @sk8rguy4life1123 I hit the wrong nail.....

  • speaking of argon, i have a window with a failed seal so there has been moisture building up and it dried up but now there is a huge white water build up stain and i cant see out the window. how hard is it to replace the double pane glass with out replacing the frame?

  • @blazzzzin I have a column and a video about glass replacement of this nature at my AsktheBuilder webstite. Whenever you have a question, *always* go to my website.

  • can you make a video on how to add argon in double pane window?

    thanks

  • @pedrocholo No I can't. If your seal is broken, it's of no use. You need special equipment to fill windows with argon. I've seen it done in the factory.

  • Nice Job!

  • Use spray foam insulation around the frame-much quicker.

  • I show this technique in a separate video. You need to make sure you use the correct foam. Search here on YouTube: Foam Insulation Tim Carter and you'll find that video. Thanks for your comment.

  • i would like to see how it is done on a brick house i think it is much harder

  • I like your style of install!

  • you guys make that look so easy

with me a million things can go wrong with a simple repair job

  • Now now..... I think part of the reason is your attitude. My father-in-law taught me years ago: Nothing builds success like success. So I urge you to perhaps start with smaller jobs and build your confidence. That's all that's holding you back.

  • Hey how about a video on how not to have a hammer meet your thumb? Is there a problem or extra things to consider when you are replacing old single pane windows with new ones?

  • Thank you. I've been wondering if I can do this myself. After watching your video, I'm certain I can!

  • How do you replace old screens on a double hung window set? Because my house is pretty old (20 yrs) and has many issues. My windows in particular are a problem. Not only are my windows old but they are scratched up pretty bad by my cat, who thoguht is was clever to scratch at the window to get my attention. Are there stronger metal screens that could stand up to my cat or do I just need dicispline the him? Can windows rust? Because mine also won't budge.

Thanks for the vidoes, aprecciate it.

  • I have a question. My husband and I are first time DIYers and we thought we had some help who had framed in a wall before. Well to make a long story short, we put in a window and nailed it to the frame before we put the plywood on. Then we added plywood. Is there anyway we can fix this without taking down the whole wall? The main problem is all those nails in the vinyl window frame. HELP!!

  • Take it apart and do it right.... You don't have to strip the entire piece of sheathing off. Cut back to the center of the closest stud left and right, even the king stud at the sides of the window.

  • is there another material i can apply on aside from tape?

  • There are many window-flashing membranes/tape. Go to a real lumber yard or read the written instructions that come with the windows to see what they recommend.

  • Tim

This summer I need to put an exterior door where I presently have a window. If you get a chance to demo this job, please do. Been doing a lot of reading on the subject, but nothing beats one of your videos.

  • Thanks! It's easy... Watch my Exterior Door videos. The only missing part is the demo of the wall below the window. That's a breeze.

  • Your poor thumb Tim, Ouch.

  • Nice video, Tim. Thanks for posting.

  • sweet ... love the video

  • The doors get stuck cause they didn't even install the supposedly $30 hardware properly which I have already replaced on one of the doors. They were suppose to finish my basement door opening & they left it & i had to get on them & complain so they came back & did it.That was a bit of a fight with the guy that owns the company that put them it.I have already had the wind out handles replaced once & i have to get them replaced again.

  • I would not install a window like that, if you get water dripping along the side of the window that might get under the siding, it would collect on your bottom plate of the window framing and rot it out. I would at least put tape or flashing along the bottom, overlapping inside the bottom window plate. But before that I would use some Latex Silicone caulk around the window itself, but then again I am installing a vinyl window.

Nothing against your work, I'm just telling my opinion

  • This video was taped about nine years ago before those flashing tapes were widely available. Your point is well taken. This spring I'm going to do a series of videos that really go into detail about how to install windows. I did tape a video two years ago showing the use of the flashing tape under an exterior door. Watch that Exterior Door Installation video of mine. Thanks for commenting!

  • Tim, is it better to do the waterproof flashing instead of the tape you used around the window?

  • I don't know if I would say better. When this video was taped, those products were in their infancy. What's more, the tape I used is *made* to be 100-percent compatible with the house wrap. All I was looking for was a permanent water barrier between the house wrap and the window. The trim around the window, once in place, prevents delamination of the tape from the window. The flashing tapes out today are SUPERB products. I would just make sure the house-wrap mfr approves their use.

  • lol they cut him off at the end

  • Actually he cuts himself off. Listen a few times!

  • i am a window fitter from the uk and batt is not a very good job expanging foam is awsome and i wld not dream of driving a nail through the profile like that lol i wld always bore a pilot hole and screw fix and as for finishing the outside we would use plastic trim then seal it :) i gave u a sub man and look forward to watching more of ur videos :)

    Gareth.

  • Woah, I don't mean to criticize but spray foam is the way to go for sealing a window. Too many problems with using batt insulation.

  • but yet someone i managed to do it , the screws simply on the inside of the door , not the inside of the door build, gotta be careful , need more real traders like u :)

  • i have been a window fitter in the uk for 15 years and if that is how you fit windows in the us im coming over if i finished windows with tape here i would get fired !

  • Thanks for your comment. The tape seals the gap between the window and the water barrier. How do you do it in the UK? Tape a video showing us your method.

  • to be fair we mainly replace windows in brick built houses (its quite rare in the uk to have timber built houses) we normally fill the gap with silicone but we have a lot more rain here than you guys get will try to film us working to show how we do things

  • I would love to see your video. You can submit it as a video response to this one.

  • i just took out a smashed double glazed window out of a wooden exterior door , as i refuse to pay a cowboy immigrant builder 300 quid for a whole new door , he insisted the beaded frame cannot come out since its screwed in from the inside of the door :|

  • Window flashing should be used around the opening as well. It comes in a roll of rubber with a foil backing. Ive never used the tape stuff. Most people trim out their windows with brickmolding. Alot of windows come with this brickmolding already attached and you can use it to help secure the window. Some vinyl windows also use brickmolding.

  • After the tape how would you finish the outside?

  • Great question! In the Remove a Window video I showed taking off the piece of 5/4 x 4 wood trim that goes between the lap siding and the window jamb. I didn't put it back on in this video because it needed some prep work. Bottom Line: You install a piece of wood trim to cover the tape.

  • tim would it not be better to use screws in case you need to adjust after fixing

  • You can use screws, but most homeowners object to the visible screw heads that would show on the inside jambs. If you do have to make adjustments at a later date, the nails can be cut loose with a reciprocating saw and new ones installed in minutes.

  • what is that special tape called?

  • It was the special seam tape used with the air-infiltration barrier. Tyvek is the brand I used as that is what was on that home. Always use the tape that is compatible with the particular air-infiltration barrier.

  • The audio closing on all of the videos is louder than the main content, please even out the audio levels.

  • Yes, we are aware of this pesky problem. It has been fixed on all ones moving forward. Go watch my video on Pressure Washers to see the new ending.

  • Sashes.

  • Corrects. Sashes contain the glass. The frame, sills and sashes make up a window.
