  • Who is the Mezzo?

  • in response to Selador. musicals are wak. this is real music.

  • I think this is Michelle de Young? I remember her as a very good Didon in Davis' 2nd recording of Les Troyens

  • I'm sorry... I really love schoenberg but opera singers should need to act by now. I know that stage directors have a large part in the ridiculous things that went on here but I truly think the singer is to blame a large portion here. It just seemed so conservatory-like.

On the upside, her voice is fantastic and this lieder is superb.

  • @PurpleJacketBoy but what would you want her to do as acting here? Gurrelieder is not a true opera. I don't think Schoenberg even foresaw acting (should check). Personally, I rarely feel the need to have video with the Gurrelieder. Some actresses have a strong stage personality and might add to the atmosphere, but the audio is good enough for me. Also, there is no-one else around in this scene. the Waldtaube is all alone with her grief. We cannot and should not expect her to go flying around :-)

  • @bcallens You are right! Gurrelieder is absolutely not an opera and his usually sung static without costume, like a cantate or a passion.

But the Waldtaube ist not alone ! He speaks to his friends , the other woodpigeons of Gurre. The lied begins saying " Woodpigeons of Gurre ... come, listen to me" and he relates to them that he flew over the lugubrious funeral procession of Tove, the dead mistress of the king that the jealous queen murdered. The king, crazy, carried the thumb in the woods.

  • it is absolutely fantastic

    esto es realmente fantástico

  • i need help, what's the name of his song which sounds very scary and is not recommended for people with a weaker heart? it has something to do with the moon

  • Pierrot Lunaire? Also a scary scene in Erwartung is moonlight in the forest (and a corpse) If your heart is weakened by Schoenberg, listen to the Piano Concerto to heal it.

  • Is that Michelle deYoung?

  • Well, he could have had an even more spectacular career if he had written musicals. Fortunately for us, he didn't.

  • If Schoenberg had written musicals there would have been no need for Sondheim. Fortunately for us, he didn't.

  • Schoenberg was decidedly better before he started using dodecaphony. This piece is an example: it reminds me about Mahler and Wagner and, thanks God, no dodecaphony at all.

  • Why would Schoenberg want to do something that Mahler and Wagner had done when he was able to do something far different and more unique? Even if people don't enjoy the twelve tone they should at least respect it's pioneers as being just that, pioneers.

  • It's a shame that this video excerpt cuts out a big chunk in the middle of the Lied der Waldtaube - measures 1016 to 1056 of Act I (= mm. 60 to 100 of the 156 measures of the Lied itself) - especially as measures 1016 to 1022 (60 to 66) may well be experienced by the listener as the most poignant and dramatically significant moment of the whole song!

  • @solaredo entièrement d'accord avec ce regret - cette coupe est vraiment injustifiable!

  • Poderosíssima!!!!!

  • si!!!

  • Great stuff

  • i cant belive im saying this... but i liked it slightly

  • I have some difficulties with Schoenberg, but this one sounds quite good.

  • I've been waiting so long for someone to post any part of Gurre-lieder.

  • This is very good.

  • stunning~!
